“World News Saturday with David Muir” Delivers Most-Watched Quarter in 9 Years While “World News Sunday with David Muir” Attracts Largest Overall Audience in 11 Years

 

From the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 to the corruption in Sochi ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the start of 2014 brought compelling stories that captivated the world. As news transpired, Americans turned to ABC News on television, on radio and online to see the whole picture.  In its strongest competitive position in years, ABC News delivered outstanding 1st Quarter performances and demonstrated significant growth across each program and platform.

Highlights from 1Q14:

“Good Morning America”

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” ranked No. 1 during 1st Quarter 2014 in both Total Viewers (5.908 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.339 million).  

  • 1Q14 represented “GMA’s” 7th consecutive quarter victory in Total Viewers and 6th in a row in Adults 25-54. 
  • “GMA” marked its first back-to-back 1st quarter victories in 20 years in Total Viewers (since 1Q93 and 1Q94) and in 21 years in Adults 25-54 (since 1Q92 and 1Q93).
  • “GMA” outperformed NBC’s “Today” (5.369 million and 2.210 million) during 1Q14 by +539,000 Total Viewers and +129,000 Adults 25-54, beating the NBC program by its largest news demo advantage during any quarter in nearly 20 yearssince 2Q94.

“World News with Diane Sawyer”

During the 1st Quarter of 2014 “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 8.774 million Total Viewers and a 2.0 rating/7 share/2.361 million among Adults 25-54.

  • For the 2nd quarter in a row, “World News” posted increases compared to both the previous quarter (7.928 million and 1.982 million for 4Q13) and the year-ago quarter (8.225 million and 2.155 million for 1Q13) in Total Viewers (+11% and +6%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (+19% and +10%, respectively).
  • “World News” turned in its most-watched quarter in 6 years and strongest news demo quarter performance in 3 years- since 1Q08 and 1Q11, respectively.  The ABC evening newscast (+10%) grew the most in the demo from the year-ago quarter compared to “CBS Evening News” (up less than +1%) and “NBC Nightly News” (+6%).
  • For the 4th year in a row, “World News” narrowed its year-to-year first quarter demo margin by double-digits with “NBC Nightly News” in Adults 25-54 (-25% – 209,000 vs. 280,000) – marking its closest first quarter demo performance with the NBC newscast in 6 years – since 1Q08.  

“Nightline”

ABC’s “Nightline” averaged 1.666 million Total Viewers, 687,000 Adults 25-54 and 524,000 Adults 18-49 during the 1st Quarter of 2014.

  • “Nightline” outperformed CBS’ “The Late Late Show” during the quarter in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+219,000), Adults 25-54 (+56,000) and Adults 18-49 (+18,000).
  • “Nightline” has beaten “The Late Late Show” in overall viewers and in the key adult news demo in all 5 quarters that it has aired in its new time period.  Further, “Nightline” led the CBS program by its largest Total Viewer margin yet during a quarter.
  • “Nightline” improved on its year-ago performance in Total Viewers (+3%) and Adults 18-49 (+1%). In fact, “Nightline” delivered ABC’s largest overall audience in the time period during a 1st quarter in 11 years – since 1Q03.

“This Week with George Stephanopoulos”

For the 1st Quarter 2014, ABC News’ “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” averaged 3.175 million Total Viewers and 967,000 Adults 25-54.

  • For the 3rd quarter in a row, “This Week” beat NBC’s “Meet the Press,” leading the NBC program during 1Q14 by its largest quarter margins in both Total Viewers (+92,000) and Adults 25-54 (+48,000) in over 16 years – since 3Q97.
  • During the 13 weeks of 1Q14, “This Week” ranked No. 1 five times in Total Viewers and six times in Adults 25-54.  This represents the most number of No. 1 finishes during a quarter in over 16 years in overall viewers and in over 19 years in Adults 25-54 – since 3Q97 and 4Q94, respectively, based on regular telecasts.
  • For the 3rd consecutive quarter, “This Week” improved on the previous quarter (2.918 million and 806,000, respectively for 4Q13) in both Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 25-54 (+20%) to deliver its strongest quarter performance in 5 years – since 1Q09.

“20/20″

  • Season to date in its time period, ABC’s “20/20″ leads NBC programming (“Dateline-Fri”/”Dracula”/”Hannibal”) by 31% in Total Viewers and by 5% in Adults 25-54.
  • “20/20″ is up over the comparable weeks last year by 21% in Total Viewers, by 7% in Adults 18-49 and by 5% in Adults 25-54.  In fact, season to date, “20/20″ is averaging its most-watched season in 4 years – since the 2009-10 season.
  • Season to date, ABC’s “20/20″ stands as the No. 2 newsmagazine in both Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, behind only CBS’ NFL-fueled “60 Minutes,” topping CBS’ “48 Hours” and NBC’s “Dateline-Fri.”

ABC News Digital

As of February 2014, The Yahoo-ABC News Network is the No. 1 source of news and information online for 25 consecutive months.

  • 2 billion page views consumed by 69 million unique visitors in February across desktop
  • GoodMorningAmerica.com on Yahoo leads Today.com with 15 million unique visitors
  • In February more and more users turned to their mobile devices for ABC News live streaming video, breaking news updates and alerts. Phone web continues to be the most used mobile platform with 76% of all mobile unique visitors, thanks to strong search and social traffic.

“Good Morning America Saturday”

ABC News’ “Good Morning America Saturday” ranked No. 1 during 1st Quarter 2014 in both Total Viewers (4.434 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.548 million).  

  • 1Q14 represented “GMA Saturday’s” 5th straight quarter victory in Total Viewers and 3rd in a row in Adults 25-54.  In fact, “GMA Saturday” delivered its first back-to-back 1st quarter victories ever in Total Viewers - since debuting in its current format in September 2004.
  • “GMA Saturday” built on both the previous quarter (4Q13) and the year-ago quarter (1Q13) in Total Viewers (+4% and 23%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (+8% and 29%, respectively) to score its best quarter performances ever in both Nielsen measures.
  •  ”GMA Saturday” defeated NBC’s “Saturday Today” (3.840 million and 1.360 million) during 1Q14 by +594,000 Total Viewers and +188,000 Adults 25-54, leading the NBC program by its largest-ever 1st quarter margins.

“Good Morning America Sunday”

For the 1st Quarter 2014, “Good Morning, America Sunday” averaged 3.923 million Total Viewers and 1.323 million Adults 25-54.

  • Good Morning, America Sunday saw increases over both the prior quarter (4Q13) and the year-earlier quarter (1Q13) in Total Viewers (+8% and 24%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (+16% and 31%, respectively) to register its best-ever quarter numbers in both Nielsen measures – “GMA Sunday debuted in its current format in September 2004.
  • “GMA Sunday” led NBC’s “Sunday Today” (3.839 million and 1.275 million, respectively) for the 4th quarter in a row in Total Viewers (+84,000) and the 2nd consecutive in Adults 25-54 (+48,000), each with its largest-ever quarter advantages.

“World News Saturday with David Muir

ABC World News Saturday with David Muir” averaged 5.573 million Total Viewers and a 1.0 rating/3 share /1.195 million Adults 25-54 during the 1st Quarter 2014.

  • For the 2nd year in a row, “World News Saturday” was up over the year-ago 1st quarter in both Total Viewer (+12%) and Adults 25-54 (+13%).  In fact, “World News Saturday” saw its most-watched quarter in 9 years and strongest 1st quarter performance in the key adult demo in 3 years – since 1Q05 and 1Q11, respectively.

“World News Sunday with David Muir

During the 1st Quarter 2014, ABC World News Sunday with David Muir” drew 6.072 million Total Viewers and a 1.3 rating/ 3 share/ 1.557 million Adults 25-54.

  • “World News Sunday” improved over both the previous quarter (4Q13) and the year-ago quarter (1Q13) by double-digits in Total Viewers (+15% and 19%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (+26% and 14%, respectively).
  • “World News Sunday” attracted its largest overall quarter audience in 11 years and best Adults 25-54 deliver in nearly 8 years - since 1Q03 and 2Q06, respectively.
