2 New Mexico Officers Face Charges in Death of Homeless Man
Two Albuquerque police officers are facing murder charges in the 2014 shooting of a homeless man.
Bernalillo County District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said today that she had filed charges against Det. Keith Sandy and SWAT member Dominique Perez in the March 16 shooting death of 36-year-old James Boyd.
"In this case, we do believe that we have probable cause," Brandenburg said today during a news conference.

The shooting was captured on an officer's helmet camera.
Boyd, who was homeless and reportedly mentally ill, was illegally camping in the Sandia foothills. In the video, he appeared to follow police orders to surrender after a four-hour standoff.
But seconds after police fired a warning shot, Boyd was shot dead. The video showed him carrying a knife in each hand.
"The decision by the DA to charge Keith Sandy is unjustified and a bad decision by the DA's Office," Sandy's attorney, Sam Bregman, said today during a news conference. "There was an absolute perceived threat."
The officers said they will fight the charges. If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Boyd's death was one of several officer-involved shootings that sparked a federal probe into the Albuquerque Police Department.
"We had struggled to be as transparent as we possibly can," Brandenburg said today regarding the office's investigation. "Unlike Ferguson and unlike in New York City … the public will have the information." The DA presented the charges to a judge rather than use a grand jury.
The video is expected to be key evidence in the case.
