Nick Cannon Hospitalized With Kidney Failure

Mariah Carey announced on Twitter Wednesday that her husband, rapper and actor Nick Cannon, is in an Aspen, Colo., hospital  suffering from what she called “mild kidney failure.”

“Please pray for Nick as he’s fighting to recover from a mild kidney failure,” the singer tweeted.  On her website, Carey posted a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed with Cannon, 31.

“We’re trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful,” she wrote in a message on the site.

Dr. Giselle Guerra, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, isn’t involved with Cannon’s treatment, but said he may have a case of acute kidney failure, also known as acute renal failure.

“Acute kidney failure happens all of sudden, whereas chronic failure happens over time, often as a result of other illnesses like diabetes or high blood pressure,” she said.  Acute kidney failure can range from mild to serious.  Serious cases may require dialysis and may develop into a chronic condition.

There are a number of causes of acute renal failure.  In some cases, any damage done to the kidneys is reversible.  The condition can be brought on by certain medications or other drugs, an obstruction or something that causes blood flow to the kidneys to drop, such as an infection or dehydration, Guerra explained.

“If it’s caused by certain medications, once a person is off the medication, it takes some time for them to wear off, but it can be reversed,” she said.  “If damage is aggressive enough, it may not be reversible.”

Symptoms of acute renal failure include nausea, weakness, sluggishness and tremors.  In severe cases, the kidneys may stop producing urine.  People may also experience blood in the urine or foam in the urine.

Pain generally occurs only if there are kidney stones or an infection in the kidney, called pyelonephritis, Guerra said.

Although she joked about being stranded in Aspen, Carey asked her fans to keep the couple in their thoughts.

“I’m not trying to make light out of the situation because it’s a serious moment that’s very tough on all of us so please keep us and our family in your prayers. LYM.”

What is “mild kidney failure?”

Posted by: Ted | January 4, 2012 January 4, 2012, 1:44 pm

There are 5 stages of kidney failure, stage 5 being the worse. Stages 1-3 may take years to require dialysis.

Renal failure is very common in African American men – even young African American men – due to chronic, untreated conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. I hope Mr. Cannon will take this opportunity to encourage other young African American males to have themselves screened.

I wish him well on his way to recovery. Whatever condition, be it an infection, genetics, diabetes, or hypertension, I hope he heeds doctors advice and take charge of his health going forward. Just because someone appears healthy on the outside, you never know what may be on the inside.

Altitude sickness can complicate any health issues. They are in Aspen, high altitude can cause Altitude sickness and dehydration.

You all are in my prayers. Exodus 15:26 I AM THE LORD WHO HEALETH THEE.

What’s that she got in the huge mug? Hopefully it’s just water, and not coffee or soda (which can make his kidneys worse.)

How full of herself is Mariah Carey to crawl into bed with her sick husband to take a photo that she’ll tweet out? What a completely insane couple of people.

You guys are an inspiration to millions of us all of the world. I’ll gladly give you one of my kidneys, just say the word. You are in my prayers.

For all those who have something negative to say about this couple that you dont know at all please remember that your opinion is merely a fart in the wind. It stinks for second and blows away. Isn’t there something productive you could be doing?…IDK, How about worrying about your own life?

Posted by: Miss Mclemore | January 4, 2012 January 4, 2012, 3:44 pm

@JIJI MORAN Are you serious, she took a picture with her sick husband to show that she is there with and to show fans that they truly care a love each other, but you get out of that picture that she is using it for personal gratification that she is using her husbands sickness. Shame on you, you are the insane person in your post.

Miss Mclemore: The same could be said about Ms. Carey and Mr. Cannon. Just farts in the wind that don’t matter much at all. This certainly doesn’t qualify as news.

I’m not a Nick and Mariah fan, but no one should suffer through any kind of kidney failure. I hope Nick has a speedy recovery.

A family member suffered from Acute Renal Failure and was hospitalized for two weeks – because he used cocaine 2-3 weeks prior. He was not a regular abuser of the drug, and thankfully, he fully recovered (no dialysis required.) Regardless of the reason – best wishes to NC.

I wish Nick a speedy recovery. He is on my prayer rosary..

Posted by: Jennifer | January 4, 2012 January 4, 2012, 7:11 pm

I am praying that Nick gets better.

Posted by: Ashley | January 4, 2012 January 4, 2012, 8:39 pm

Yeah, something about this photo that just reeks. First of all renal failure is from drugs. Sorry I think they’re on drugs. I remember hearing somewhere that CPS came to their house because of drugs. So eventually this may be the situation.

Why do people always have to think the worse about someone they don’t even really know. I’ll pray that Nick recovers soon because he is someone’s son, someone’s father, and someone’s husband. I wouldn’t want any of these important people in my life to be ill with kidney failure.

Posted by: Cheryl | January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012, 2:10 am

Yes we should not cast stones here and hope for a recovery. None of this sounds good. This is Tylenol abuse, Advil abuse and other more potent pain medications abuse. Coupled with weight issues this needs acute medical attention. Bless him that he may recover fully.

Renal Failure can happen from a lot of things. I was hospitalized last year because of working out too hard and getting dehydrated. Then I got Rhabdomyolysis, which is mild renal failure. I don’t use drugs and it was painful and scary.

I hope the best for Nick and that he recovers fully like I have.

Is it possible that Mr Cannon could have sickle cell trait?

Stay strong mariah and nick.may god bless u with ur good health once again, keep him in ur thoughts at all times.im praying for ur family as well…god bless.fight till the end

I hope he pulls through. And all of these comments about high blood pressure and diabetes suck. This is a young man regardless of his race and none of us really know what happened to cause this but just because he’s black doesn’t mean he has high blood pressure, every black person doesn’t have high blood pressure. Some of us actually take care of our bodies!

To the stupid person above me that commented “renal failure is from drugs”, tell me why my 75 year old father died of renal failure, when he very obviously was NOT on drugs? Stupid people like you make my blood boil!

Posted by: rory587 | January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012, 11:55 am

My husband had this happen several years ago. He wasn’t taking any drugs, prescription or otherwise. He was at work and just fell over in a seizure. One doctor told us his condition could reverse and another gave my husband no hope. He said that my husband would be on dialysis and would have to have a kidney transplant. My husband was on dialysis for a month and has been good ever since. He does, however, still see the kidney doctor to make sure everything is still ok. The doctor apologized for his grim prediction and was amazed there was no kidney damage. I pray for Nick (and Mariah), and hope that he has a full recovery, also.

Posted by: cheryl | January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012, 2:11 pm

I REALLY hope he gets better, I know how painful it is, not exactly fun. I was actually in the hospital about 2 weeks after thanksgiving for kidney failure..my kidney thing was at like 9. something! That’s….Not Good. I was a couple points away from dialysis. They had me on a LOT of liquids through IV, but I still had to drink fluids orally, wasn’t very easy. Doctors weren’t SURE, but they wanna say it was due to a lot medication in my system, (antibiotics, muscle relaxers, IBUPROFEN!!!! (<—Motrin, etc))…Bad for you if you're not hydrated enough. So, DRINK A LOT OF FLUIDS!!! My failure was Completely Reversed, Nick should be fiinee. (; <3 ! I will Pray for Him. :)!

To the ones who made comments assuming it was from drugs. You don’t know that. Kidney failure can be brought on by a number of things like the other reply stated. So what if Mariah tweeted her fans. She loves her fans and wants to let them know what’s going on. Maybe i am not a huge fan either, but I pray for Nick to have a speedy recovery and that the doctors will find out the cause and be able to correct it. Wish them all the best and Mariah for being there to support Nick. Take care of those wonderful babies.

Posted by: Beth | January 6, 2012 January 6, 2012, 3:43 am

Nick, have a speedy recovery, look to GOD , Ignore the negatives!

Posted by: BR chaddy | January 6, 2012 January 6, 2012, 6:53 am

A “mild” case of renal failure? I’ve had this happen to me, and it’s not “mild”. You feel as if you are dying…it’s horrible.
Blessing to you Nick, get well soon!

Posted by: donna | January 6, 2012 January 6, 2012, 7:45 am

Screw what everyone thinks Mariah, take care of your man and do you. Thats what African American Womens have done for centuries. Keep it up let him know he has a DIVA of a wife , picture or not you buy his side. STAY THERE!!!

Posted by: Marette | January 6, 2012 January 6, 2012, 12:20 pm

I too have had kidney “problems” and do not “do” drugs, but I can tell you this, I have had 5 kids and I would rather have another kid then go through that pain. Regardless of what triggered the problem the man needs healing, he has a family and we need to be showing some love and respect for a fellow human being without judgements-to pass judgement is not our job-praying for his healing

Posted by: Darlene | January 6, 2012 January 6, 2012, 7:30 pm

Nick, i have kidney promblems also and by GOD’s grace you will be o.k. I don’t have much but i got is yours if it can help…..Gary.
