Americans have loved the oatmeal cookie ever since it first made its appearance in the late 1800s.  Out of the 2 million cookies Americans eat each year, oatmeal cookies were the second most popular cookie after chocolate chip.

The hearty oatmeal dough freezes well and was originally dubbed a health food when it was created.  The cookies can be made with a variety of oats, such as  steel cut or old-fashioned.

The smell of freshly baked oatmeal cookies wafting through the house  is the best way to celebrate this national holiday.  Here are some of our favorite recipes that are guaranteed family favorites:

Oatmeal Dark-Chocolate Chip Cookies

Laura Bush’s Oatmeal-Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Bethenny Frankel’s “Naturally Thin” Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
