National Vanilla Milkshake Day

Beat the heat with an ice-cold milkshake in honor of this national holiday. In the late 1800s, the word "milkshake" described an eggnog-like drink made with whiskey. By the start of the 1900s the drink was updated with a wholesome twist. Made with malted milk and ice cream, milkshakes increased in popularity and began appearing in malt shops around the country. The invention of the milkshake machine in 1950 allowed the frozen treats to be mass produced at fast food restaurants.
