Get a Fab Face Using Drugstore Makeup
For some ladies, makeup is truly a guilty pleasure. It's common to spend big bucks for those designer name brands, but it may not be worth it.
Beauty and style expert Rebekah George has secret savings for makeup, and shows us how to get the same quality for more than half the price by using drugstore cosmetics. The total price for all of these products was only $48.19.
Here are George's favorite drugstore cosmetics for a fabulous face on the cheap:
Lips
CoverGirl Blast Flipstick Lipcolor, $8
Colors can be combined or worn alone to create different shades. One side is shimmery, the other is creamy to create different lip looks. Look for lipsticks/glosses that allow you to layer them on for different looks. Choose a soft pink shade, which works on all skin tones and is subtle enough to use day or night.
Eyes/Lids
Revlon Custom Shadow & Liner, $8.79
This color-coordinated shadow palette can be used as shadow or to line lids. Look for shadows that can transition into any occasion - day or night - and can also be used as liner for a uniformed look. Wet your eyeliner to transform these shadows into a gel eyeliner form.
Color/Highlighter
Rimmel Natural Bronzer, $4.92
This product gives you a natural glow and the palette is big enough to last you an entire year. Bronzer can replace your concealer. The coppery tones help cancel out redness and it helps add a glow to your skin. For a natural look, apply where the sun hits your face - chin, cheeks, temples, and bridge of your nose. Combine it with a pop of pink blush for a healthy, flushed look. Buy it in bulk - bronzer lasts a whole year and can be worn season-to-season so you get more bang for your buck.
Cheeks
Maybelline Fit Me Blush, $5.50
Its silky pigments provide a streak-free finish and it's available in more than 12 shades. Look for a good pink blush that will mimic the way you look after a three-mile run. If you're going to save on blush, pick powders. They contain more pigments than creams and will stay on your skin longer. But toss the cheap brush it comes with and invest in a high-quality blush brush. They key is application so you need a good brush to help it glide on smoothly.
Brows
Jordana Brow Powder Duo , $2.99
You don't have to spend a lot. The key is to look for a color that matches your brow and apply in light, feathery strokes. After you stroke it on, use a brow brush to comb through so it gets rid of any clumps and evenly distributes. This line of makeup is made for drugstores like Walgreens and Duane Reade. Don't be afraid of buying exclusive drugstore lines - they are made in the same factory as the name brands and give you the same quality for less.
Mascara
Wet-n-Wild Mega Protein Washable Mascara, $1.99
This mascara contains protein to condition and help lashes grow. Most mascaras are made with the same formula. So don't break the bank here. Be sure to apply two light coats to get a great result. You can also save your wand from a more expensive mascara, and then reuse it over and over again with a tube of cheaper mascara.
Foundation/Concealer/Powder
L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator SPF 15, $16
Here is a multi-tasking cream that primes, evens, and brightens skin.
Tip: Wet your foundation sponge or brush for an airbrushed finish. BB Creams are a great investment because they save you the cost and hassle of having to buy other makeup like primer, concealer, foundation and a highlighter.
