Twitter users are jokingly nicknaming L’Enfant Plaza “L’Infant Plaza” after a woman delivered her baby son on the platform this morning.

23-year-old Shayvonnte Taylor was on the green line train toward Greenbelt, Md., when her water broke around 10:30 am, said Metro spokesperson Philip Stewart. An off-duty emergency medical technician was on board the same car, so both Taylor and the EMT got off at the L’Enfant Plaza stop and called medics.

But “the baby was just not waiting,” Stewart said. By 10:45 am, “Metrobaby,” as he’s being called on Twitter, was born on the platform itself.

Metro Transit Police say the mother and son are both doing fine and were transported to a local hospital. Taylor has named her son Amir, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, who sent her a short letter after the birth.

How did this whole experience affect other Metro passenger? Stewart said there were no delays to service as a result of the birth. In fact, one woman tweeted that she didn’t even notice the delivery taking place although she was at L’Enfant at the time.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, Stewart said. Almost exactly one year ago, a 22-year-old woman went into labor on a different Green Line station called Congress Heights. She, however, was able to get to a hospital before the baby was born, according to a Washington Post report.
