Dick Cheney to Hillary Clinton: Run!

LOS ANGELES — Hillary Clinton for president?

“So far she hasn’t said she would, but I think it’s not a bad idea,” former Vice President Dick Cheney told ABC’s Jonathan Karl in an interview on Wednesday to promote his new book “In My  Time.”

Cheney declined to say whether he thought the current Secretary of State would have been a better president than Barack Obama, but called her a “pretty formidable individual.”

“I think she’s probably the most competent person they’ve got in their– in their cabinet.  And– frankly, I thought she was gonna win the nomination last time around,” Cheney said. “Maybe if– the Obama record is bad enough– and these days it’s not very good, given the shape of the economy maybe there will be enough ferment– in the Democratic Party so that there will be a primary on their side.”

During the interview, Cheney criticized several of the Republican presidential candidates, including front-runner Rick Perry whose comments about Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Cheney described as “over-the-top.”

While Cheney sounded positive notes about Clinton, he said not to expect him to endorse anyone on the Republican side anytime soon.

“I don’t plan to endorse anybody till we get a lot farther down the road,” he said.

Ya know the Republicans need to get off of this one. The “spoiler” strategy ain’t gonna happen. Besides isn’t it too late to file? Hillary was an impressive candidate and I think an excellent Secretary of State. I think she is looking forward to turning in her plane and heading home for some rest. But Dick likes her… okay… Have Biden be Secretary of State and Mrs. Clinton as Vice President in the second term. Ya see… everybody can be happy.

It will be the kiss of death for the canidate that he endorses!!

Posted by: Eric | September 7, 2011, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm

Of course he wants her to run. Having Obama spend half his cash on a primary means only good things for republicans.

Posted by: Jake | September 7, 2011, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

Let me see if I understand this. You want a neophyte to run against a neophte? Does that make any sense? Please share with us her experience as a chief executive officer, as a commander in chief, as a chief enforcement officer? I’ll give you a little superficial experience in foreign policy.

Cheney would slowly lower his grandmother into a vat of lava if he thought it might somehow chip Obama’s image even a little. Evidently he forgot that Clinton-care would’ve been even more liberal than the Obama-care that Tea Partiers won’t shut up about. At least he stole enough money through Halliburton that he’ll never need to worry about health insurance ever again. (The fact that Cheney’s opinion is even taken seriously by the media anymore is a discredit to this fine nation)

Posted by: david | September 7, 2011, 6:37 pm 6:37 pm

mytakeonthis61- it’s not a spoiler strategy. The way Republicans see it is if they have to lose the election, they would rather lose to Clinton than Obama. Republicans think she is smarter and would make a better president. And a VP does nothing. We want a President who can actually govern and Obama isn’t it. Obama should be the Chairman of the DNC. That’s all he’s done for 4 years is campaign and he seems to like that. I don’t think he likes being President.

Of course, Dick Cheney endorsing her is like the kiss of death, which he said in an interview this past weekend.

Cheney sure knows how to stir things up. The ObamaBots are going to be pretty frothy about this!

Hillary is not going to be a second banana to a loser. I don’t think she would accept a VP slot if it was offerred.

Who is Cheney, the man who RUINED America by invading Iraq and bankrupting our country, to say ANYTHING about what Hilary or Americans should do?

Posted by: Walton | September 7, 2011, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm

Whether or not you like Cheney he speaks the truth. If Hillary were President I doubt if we would be 15 trillion in debt. Didn’t her husband balance the budget with republicans? She would do the same.

Posted by: Sandy | September 7, 2011, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm

Yea, Hillary has done such a fabulous job as Secretary of State that she ought to run for POTUS —-NOT.
Let’s see, the reputation of the US internationally is now the lowest in history, the MIddle East is on fire, South America has turned away from the US , the UK thinks we have gone nuts, etc. Thanks for your part in all that, Hillary, you’ve been the worst SoS in the history of the country.
Remember this—she is cut from the very same cloth as Obama, i.e. anti America sentiment, Alinsky influenced, radicalized lefty nut jobs. and liars of the highest magnitude.

Posted by: Cherie | September 7, 2011, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

Maybe Cheney thinks if he can get Hillary to run against and defeat Obungler in the primary that in the general election maybe she’d go quail hunting with him to try and court the NRA voters.

When Bill Clinton and John Kerry ran for President both made a point to go hunting and took a news crew with them so this isn’t all that far fetched. And Hillary is no stranger to sniper fire and wouldn’t worry about Cheney accidentally shooting her.

It might even demonstrate to voters that she was calm under fire.

Posted by: deedeemao | September 7, 2011, 6:49 pm 6:49 pm

Hilary should be considering a run based on Obama’s own words if nothing else.
He said that if things sukked at the end of his first term he’d not run again.
Well…?

Posted by: IGetItAlready | September 7, 2011, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm

I am a Democrat,. I would love to vote for Hillary in the primary. I am damn sure NOT going to vote for Obama at any point in 2012.

This is the same Dick Cheney who once said that the size of the debt doesn’t matter as long as you can service it. Well, hell, Dick, sometimes it can got so big and your growth so small that you can’t, partner. Da (He personally, of course, never experienced that.)

Suppose he’d prefer to see Hillary as POTUS than the anti-establishment Perry or even Romney?

Posted by: Archy Cary | September 7, 2011, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

Obama is hands down the worst President ever in US history so anything, even Hillary or a turnip for that matter would be a better choice at this point.

Sandy: You obviously don’t read the papers: Have you ever heard of THE ARAB SPRING? Since 18 December 2010 there have been revolutions in Tunisia[2] and Egypt;[3] a civil war in Libya resulting in the fall of the regime there;[4] civil uprisings in Bahrain,[5] Syria,[6] and Yemen;[7] major protests in Algeria,[8] Iraq,[9] Jordan,[10] Morocco,[11] and Oman,[12] and minor protests in Kuwait,[13] Lebanon,[14] Mauritania,[15] Saudi Arabia,[16] Sudan,[17] and Western Sahara. “The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers.

Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can “throw the rascals out” at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy.”

I think Mr. Cheney’s remarks are sincere and offered only for the good of the country. Having said that, I can’t think of a situation in which I’d vote for Mrs. Clinton except in a primary contest with the execrable Mr. Obama.

Let’s remember what got hillary where she is today—who she was married to. She got her instant credentials the old fashioned way. Also don’t forget that she was the ‘inevitable candidate’ and she blew that. No real experience and a real temper.

Posted by: Perplexed | September 7, 2011, 7:09 pm 7:09 pm

I see that some of you think this is a strategy on Cheney’s part to weaken the D nominee. I see it as proof that there is a dime’s worth of difference between the party establishments. I also found it noteworthy that Cheney would defend the federal reserve system, or at least Bernanke. Ron Paul is right about the Federal Reserve being the tool of both big government parties.

To those of you who think the curreny president has a chance, I would like to introduce you to the phrases double-digit price inflation next summer and imminent bond market implosion. His approval rating will be in the 20′s. It may be some of you who agitate for a different nominee.

The very best thing about Cheney’s comments is that it sends the left wing into a tizzy. I just LOVE watching them pee all over themselves and froth at the mouth.

It wasn’t until this moment that I realized it, but the race issue prevents Mrs. Clinton from mounting a primary challenge against President Obama. She’s well aware of how she’d be viewed by all her adoring fans and how she’d be torn apart by a media that would under any other circumstances carry her to victory. Man, it would be fun to watch.

@Walton –
I respect your opinion and your right to express your opinion in a forum such as this. I even fought for it 20 years ago, so to speak. The fact is, 156 of the 535 members of Congress voted AGAINST invading Iraq. Do the quick math…carry the one…and 379 members of Congress, Democrat and Republican, voted to go to war with Iraq. Bush and Cheney could not arbitrarily invade a country just because they wanted to. Last I checked, even Hillary Clinton voted to invade.

Before Hillary ran the last time around, she said to Jay Leno on his show that she was not going to run. But she lied. She was recently asked if she would run for president or vice president and she said, “no”. But, she’s a liar so we cannot know for sure. Why aren’t the media asking Cheney about Haliburton and his profits on the spoils of war? Dick Cheney is responsible for the unparalleled slaughter of Iraqis, Afghanis and Americans. Mr. Cheney isn’t fit to tie President Obama’s boots. He should reservve his rhetoric for the war crimes tribunal. He’ll need a defense around the year 2020.

Right on @Mike. And Hillary won the popular vote even with the media working round the clock to prop up Obama. Obama should step aside and she should run. It’s the only chance the country has, especially with that motley group of miscreants on the Republican side. If the Republicans had a decent candidate, that would be ok too, but they don’t as usual.

Hillary would be doing the country a great service. Obama is just plain incompetent. As a Republican, I can’t help but think that we would be much better off today had she been elected POTUS. Patriotic Democrats should be trying to convince Obama to let someone better qualified to run.

Slow down there DC…..everyone knows Hillary is doing what Obama tells her to do in the middle east. Everything you pointed out is Obama’s policy. He is her boss, she is his SOS, he has the power for now, but she will soon get even with him not unlike Powel got even with Bush on Iraq. Obama’s poll numbers are pathetic. He is a total failure as President. Hillary is the only Democrat that can win in 2012. Trust me!

Posted by: Sandy | September 7, 2011, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm

Yes! Walton is correct. Hillary should have, and in fact, did win the votes of the rank-and- file “grass roots”Docratic voter but the Clinton haters(Kennedy,Kerry,Dean and McCullif ) manipulated the convention to swing the nomination to “O”. Bill and Hillary are rightfully angry over this backstabing by Dem Party kingpins who are now reaping buyers remorse. This is Chenny”s most honest statement. The Democrats are going to have to kiss her ass to get her to run in 2012 and some forecasters predict she maystand aside to watch “O”: lose just to set the stage for her return in 2016. She is still young enough to pull it off.

The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.

With that level of mentality…it’s like a picture book for 4 years olds…Almost total destruction of the Country is the only way they’ll get it, even then….there are still a frightening number who still don’t get it. ie: Maxine Waters, pro-union types and illegal aliens.

Posted by: TooBright | September 7, 2011, 11:45 pm 11:45 pm

Wish Obama would call it one and done, and step aside to let Hillary run. The one thing he has going for him is that he is the incumbent and is so far unchallenged. I don’t see him getting a second term.
The “change we can believe in” became “well I’m hoping we might be able to do that down the road.”
He promised to light up the sky but ended up just sputtering out, a dud. Hillary was ready, it was her moment. We were told to believe in Obama, but after Bush we didn’t need to believe, we desperately needed someone who could do the job!!

I am a Democrat who would love to have the chance to vote for Hillary.

Hillary looks to tired; she is going to take the money and hide.

“Pease share with us her experience as a chief executive officer, as a commander in chief, as a chief enforcement officer? I’ll give you a little superficial experience in foreign policy.”

After looking at Obama she has twice the experience as he does after four years. I will say this about Obama he and his wife could write a book on golf, B-ball, and vacations. Anything, or anyone is better that Obama. Run Hill run, got my vote.

Democrats are the worst racists; watch how they treat Obama after he loses.

Somebody just said “Cheneyt would lower his grandmother into a vat of lava”.

I would lower mine too if I was Dick Cheney. She probably died a hundred years ago, I don’t think she’d feel it.

Posted by: AK from Wake Forest | September 8, 2011, 1:39 am 1:39 am

Of course that criminal Cheney thinks Clinton running would be a good thing. It’d split the Democrat vote and ensure another awful Republican gets elected to finish the job of destroying America that W. Bush started.

Posted by: beedogs | September 8, 2011, 4:37 am 4:37 am

Why is Cheney, (A REPUBLICAN) telling Hillary, (A DEMOCRAT) to run for president? I guess both the Democrats and the Republicans really are owned by the same puppet master.

Posted by: Crazy | September 8, 2011, 4:53 am 4:53 am

I made the mistake of not voting for her, I voted for President Obama, but I was stupid on that one upon reflection although I am very proud of President Obama as a man, husband and father, but now I realized no person could have solved what he inherited economicly.

Yet, I also realize President Obama Advisers lack the economic wisdom to revive the economy.

Therefore, there is no sin in being stupid, the sin is in staying stupid! I ain’t stupid anymore, HILLARY RUN HILLARY RUN, YOU GO GIRL!

Posted by: AGMINES | September 8, 2011, 5:07 am 5:07 am

You HuffPo folks fall for this stuff every time. You’ll be lucky if Obama makes it to the end of this term, let alone gets reelected. How sad is that? Bush, with all the hatred spewed at him from every media source on earth, except one, and all that was going on, war, 9/11, Patriot Act, the controversy of election 2000 and all the ‘He’s not my president’ and promises of moving to Canada by so many celebrities, he gets reelected. Lol!!

Posted by: TR | September 8, 2011, 7:08 am 7:08 am

And to those who are wondering why Cheney is advising the democrats. Just go back to the last election when all the networks, in other words, democrats, were advising the republicans on who they should put forth, who had the best chances.

Same thing.

We are coming to the end of the 6th Ages…”The Times of the Gentiles” are coming to an end. Also, the end of “The Church Age”.

The next Age is called “The Kingdom Age”. There is going to be a 7 year Transition Period which is called The Great Tribulation. Those that are left behind will experience these nasty events put onto mankind. The rate of survival is about 15%.

It won’t matter what Cheney said or did.

Posted by: Greg the Electrician | September 8, 2011, 7:56 am 7:56 am

Hey, I”m an “R” but I’d take Hillary any time over what we have. And if things boil down to a situation I think we might be headed for – I’ll vote for her. Better her than O.
Just because we are a member of one party doesn’t mean we can’t think for ourselves. At least SOME of us can. Last round I was quietly supporting her, knowing how O would turn out – and I was right. Until “our side” can put up someone worth a #$%, we might as well choose the best the other side has to offer.
What’s wrong with thinking as an individual at times instead of always following hard party lines? It’s the parties that are running the country, not the people – and that is SO wrong.

I think Cheney’s daughter should run. She could be our first lesbian president.

Posted by: Jonathan | September 8, 2011, 8:54 am 8:54 am

Love to vote for Hillary!
Least she is “loyal” and definitely born in the good ol’ USA with her life an open book.
No Obama 2012.
Give me “Bills” not “Change”!!!

Posted by: HT | September 8, 2011, 9:19 am 9:19 am

You’re right, BillD — loyalty to a party, rather than to America, is what’s tearing our nation apart. I’m an independent and I’ve always voted for who I believed would serve our nation best. I can’t abide by the folks clinging to Pres Obama just b/c they’re staunchly democrat. I would have voted for Hillary, with some misgivings, but I was willing to give her a shot.

Posted by: wildblueyondergoAF | September 8, 2011, 9:28 am 9:28 am

Like obama she has very little relevant experience for President. It is a sad state in this country that one of its political parties has become so dominated by ‘special privilege’ groups that it is limited in its offerings because it has to pander to those groups.

Posted by: Perplexed | September 8, 2011, 9:30 am 9:30 am

Ok, Cheney needs committed. Hillary has never worked for America. She is always playing overseas somewhere with nothing accomplished. She gives 50 million here, 100 million there of americans tax money to countries that hate and treat women like Billie treats her. No woman should be in the middle east. No man would listen to her they are just amused by her. Then she tells americans there is no money for the projects that need done in USA.

Posted by: evefromeden | September 8, 2011, 9:30 am 9:30 am

I am an independent. I would vote for Hillary over Bachman, Santorum, Pawlenty, Huntsman, Perry, Paul, Gingrich. I would have to see debates between Clinton and Romney and, I want Herman Cain in either administration at a Cabinet Level Post.

Posted by: Sarasota Pete | September 8, 2011, 10:07 am 10:07 am

This is hysterical. I’ll bet the former VP is getting a lot of laughs sowing dissention among democrats and progressives. He has a point though, with all the liberal dissatisfaction with Obama, why isn’t there any talk of a challenger from their ranks? Oh, I know, as Hillary found out last time, if you challenge The One, you must be a raaaaa-cist!

Posted by: Cpm | September 8, 2011, 10:15 am 10:15 am

Hillary is the same ideologically as Obama. She’s a good deal smarter therefore more dangerous. She’s a Marxist and a follower of Saul Alinsky. She could capture a lot these middle of the road types disenchanted with Obama. With these statements Cheney’s revealed himself as another inside the beltway operator who’s more concerned with upsetting this apple cart that’s been carefully built in Washington. Upsetting the apple cart is just what is needed.

Maybe he really is Darth Vader.

I like Dick Cheney.. but i wish he would shut the “you know what” up… he is beginning to peave me off…
you are retired.. take some lessons from George W Bush.. when you are retired you keep your mouth shut…

you have served us well.. now go retire

I challenge those of you who think hillary is sufficently experienced to be President. What exactly would you list to substantiate that claim? Please, first lady is not relevant. That logic would mean that Mame Eisenhower was experienced enought to be President. Remember that when hillary ran last for president she had not been secretary of state and had only held ONE elective office.

Posted by: Perplexed | September 8, 2011, 10:45 am 10:45 am

I would vote for Hillary before Rhomney. At least with Hillary you know what you get.

HIllary would be just as bad as if not worse than obummer; She is a lying, vile, arrogant witch.

Posted by: Inquisitor | September 8, 2011, 11:08 am 11:08 am

If Hillary would run against Obama and win, I would ask the Republicans to drop out of the Presidential race and install her immediately.

Posted by: jimmy | September 8, 2011, 11:11 am 11:11 am

Cheney is switching parties? He might as well if he’s rooting for Hillary to run. I’m sure we all remember her efforts with HillaryCare. Is that what we want? And worse yet, bringing Bill back to the White House? Please. Gumby would be preferential to anyone on the liberal side of the fence.

I’m not a Democrat, but the truth is:

1. If we either had to have Hillary Clinton or Obama as POTUS the last 2 1/2 years, the U.S. would be in much much better shape if Hillary Clinton was President (I voted for McCain). In fact I am thankful that Hillary is Sec. of State and I don’t like her; and,

2. Rush Limbaugh must take some responsibility for Obama beating Clinton because he was very active in encouraging cross-over voting for Obama against Clinton in the various state primaries. I kept saying to friends who said they were going to do this…Careful what you wish for.”

I voted in the 2008 primary for Obama to do my part to make sure Hillary did not win. Boy do I regret that mistake. If the primary were today I would vote for Hillary for sure. She would not be a great president and would probably make me mad on a lot of issues, but she would be better than Obama at least… and right now our country needs better than what it is getting for a President.

ramrants wrote, “The way Republicans see it is if they have to lose the election, they would rather lose to Clinton than Obama.”

LOL! Silliest thing I have read here today. Losing is losing. The Republicans should be used to that by now. Oh well, they’ll get more practice come November 2012………..

This old gangster’s advice is one more very bad attempt at a joke, like so many others given by Republicans in the past — the most notorious being the one Kissinger gave to Carter about receiving the Shah in the US for cancer treatment. That was the green light Khomeini was waiting for the embassy’s invasion in Teheran and all the rest that ensued. Tehrefore, my advice to Hillary is: please ignore what this scum of the Earth is trying to tell you.

Posted by: Claudio Lessa | September 8, 2011, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm

I find it quite humorous that so many Repubs constantly run down the current POTUS and anyone who voted for him. The inescapable fact is that Obama would NOT have won the last presidential election had there been a decent Republican candidate running against him (you can also thank Sarah Palin for the loss as well). And the newest crop of Republican candidates is a joke! Run, Hillary, Run!!!

Posted by: Jay | September 8, 2011, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

Obviously none of you hillary supporters will take up my challenge to substantiate all of the relevant experience she has—-not. If she had not been married to Bubba you would have never heard of her. She certainly would have never been elected a US Senator from New York having held NO elective office or even having lived there.

Everything is the Dem’s fault. WOW! How soon we forget the Bush Years, the years from hell; the years that set the stage for everything that has gone wrong with the economy and our foreign policy. It was Bushy boy who managed to ruin our reputation around the world. Not even a miracle worker could have pulled us out of this mess. I love how the Repubs like to rewrite history. Obama may not be living up to what we all expected but Bush will still go down as the worst president in history. Just look at the mess he left us with and went on his merry little way.

Of course Cheney would endorse a fellow war criminal. That he would not pick the one who is currently president, and would the one who endorsed his (Cheney’s) own war crimes is just a happy coincidence, I guess…
