Ron Paul: I’m Not Going to Kowtow to the Latino Vote

Rep. Ron Paul gave a sneak peak into how his administration would handle illegal immigrants, telling a Spanish language news program, I’m not going to kowtow to Latino voters.

Paul, appearing on Univision’s Sunday morning politics show “Al Punto,” said that illegal immigrants shouldn’t be given any special route to citizenship. Paul instead suggested the possibility of their earning a work permit to fold them into the American legal system.

“If everyone who comes illegally is automatically given citizenship, a vote, and can apply for welfare, that would not be good format because we would have more of it,” said Paul.

Paul also offered a different interpretation of the 14th amendment, adding that children of illegal immigrants are not under the jurisdiction of U.S. law and thus should not be given automatic citizenship.

He also shrugged off any worries that his message might not appeal to Latino voters who are concerned about immigration reform.

“If you think I need to have a different message for Hispanics than I do for other people, I think that’s unnecessary,” said Paul. “I don’t want to punish anyone who belongs to a special group, and nobody should get special privilege either.”

He never used those words, and it makes it sound like he was insulting people when you do. He said he is not going to have a different message for the Latino voters than for anyone else, that he thinks Hispanics prize freedom, also.

Way to spin it with words he never used.

Kudos to Ron Paul for standing up to his principles. “I don’t want to punish anyone who belongs to a special group, and nobody should get special privilege either.” Awesome! Just wish all our politicians would have the courage to commit to this principle.

The only thing that i don’t like about Ron Paul, is the fact that he is one of a kind….

I am getting so irritated at how the media is twisting Ron Paul’s words.

Hey guys he did use the words Kowtow, the author of the article isn’t spinning anything it was a good and accurate article… Ron Paul 2012!

This is just another hit piece. Shame on you ABC for putting words into Ron Paul’s mouth which he never uttered. You are disgusting!!

Posted by: CAFM | October 4, 2011, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

PART ThREE:
Ramos: Congressman, so if you’re not for immigration reform, if you do not agree with the idea that children of undocumented immigrants should become automatic citizens, how are you going to get 35 percent of the Hispanic vote if you become the republican candidate? I mean, it would be almost impossible. So many voters don’t agree with you.

Paul: Well for me to think that I have to have a different message for Hispanics than I do for other people. I think it’s unnecessary. I think Hispanics have as much interest in freedom as everybody else. So to say I have to kowtow in a sense… well the only way you can get the vote from any special group, is by giving special privilege. I don’t want to punish anybody that doesn’t belong to a special group, but they shouldn’t be given special privilege either.

Ramos: Talking about foreign policy. Let me ask you about Mexico. As you know, in the last 4-5 years more than 40,000 people have died. President Felipe Calderon just announced that most of those deaths can be attributed to arms being sold in the United States. Would you support any restrictions in the United States to prevent those arms, American arms, going to drug traffickers in Mexico?

Paul: Well, you know the scandal that has been going on there, some of that was deliberate. The FBI was involved. That is a real scandal. I think it’s an outrage. But no, what goes into Mexico, Mexico has to deal with.

Posted by: Blonduxo | October 4, 2011, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

Good for Dr.Paul. You see he doesn’t have to play word games with people because people will respect his sincerity. Dr.Paul is some one you can truest unlike all the other politicians, no mater what ethnic group or other special interest group you might be coming from Dr.Paul wants equal liberty for all!

Posted by: Joanna Works | October 4, 2011, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm

PART FOUR:
Ramos: Yes, but don’t you want to limit the sale of arms here in the United States that end up in the hands of Mexican drug traffickers? What’s wrong with that?

Paul: Well, if Mexico doesn’t want them down there. What I want to do is restrict our government participation in that. But I don’t want somebody coming and restricting the right of an individual in this country to defend themselves. Mexico has a lot of responsibility there too, for that. But when our government participates in it, then I’m with you on what you’re implying, that we have to do something about it. And that’s where most of the problem is. But you can’t deal with that problem if you don’t want to even talk about the drug war. That’s where the criminality is, and the corruption is, that’s where the gang wars are. It’s over the drugs that we have to deal with.

Ramos: Congressman, just one last question. Should be talk to dictators… should we talk to Ahmadinejad, to Castro, to Hugo Chavez? Is that a good policy?

Paul: Well, why not? Didn’t we talk to Khrushchev and all the Soviet leaders? How can there be any regime worse than the Soviets and the Chinese, and we talked to them. So we should talk to people. Our problem is… you take somebody like Castro in Cuba. We haven’t traded or talked to them for a long time. The cold war is over and done with. I mean, we don’t have a very good record as Americans of picking the right dictators. We support dictators all the time, but only when they obey us. As long as they obey us, then we give them money and we prop them up. As soon they cross ways with us, then we start bombing and getting rid of those dictators. I don’t like that at all.

“Ron Paul: I’m Not Going to Kowtow to the Latino Vote”
Well Jason Polock, did Paul say “I’m Not Going to Kowtow to the Latino Vote” or not? Cause I didn’t see it in the rest of the article. Either you are mistaken (cough) or you are a liar. Which is it?

Posted by: Jim Brown | October 4, 2011, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

How can you not like this policy? If anything this should get him more hispanic votes not less, I do not see how a hispanic who is here legally and able to vote legally could be in favor of giving illegals special rights and privileges when they themselves are not afforded the same for going throught the process the right way. The message is simple, legal immigrants and U.S. citizens should not be at a disadvantage over illegals, seems to make a lot of sense to me.

Posted by: RMD343 | October 4, 2011, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

Oh Jason, it must be so hard to serve two masters, the truth and ABC News. You’re doing a good job of serving your corporate master. Serving the master called ‘truth/? Not so much.

How do American born children not be considered American??

Posted by: Jenn | October 4, 2011, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

Perry = neocon that wants to send our military to Mexico! If that doesn’t scare you, what does?
Romney = neocon and, like Perry, start of an unjust war with Iran.
Ron Paul = pro-liberty and pro-peace
Isn’t the math simple? I’m a military veteran and Ron Paul will get more Latino votes buy offering them freedom and peace than welfare and war like Perry, Obama and Romney.
Here’s another simple question – Who do you think will vote/veto according to what he campaigns on? You know my answer – What’s yours?

Posted by: Vet4RonPaul | October 4, 2011, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm

The original intent of the 14th amendment was to protect newly freed slaves, not newborns of illegals. The constitution gives congress the authority to restrict the jurisdiction the federal courts, thereby ending birthright citizenship.

Posted by: Mike Corkel | October 4, 2011, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

Regardless of whether he said “kowtow” or not, I’m glad he said what he said. Why should he cater to one group of individuals just to get votes? That’s one of the main reasons I’m voting for Ron Paul. He doesn’t change his views or his message just to appeal to certain voters. And there are a lot of immigrants who become American citizens the right way. Why should people who come here illegally get the smae rights and privileges as those who follow the law?

Ron is the GREATEST! This country doesn’t deserve him.

Latino voters, like millions of other republicans, consistently vote against their own best interests.

If one understands economics, whether Latino or other, then you would support Ron Paul every minute of the day.

Ron Paul all the way 2012 !

p.s…. This article headline was lousy.

It’s refreshing to have a candidate that talks to everyone like an adult.

I may not agree 100% but freedom is a universal currency and Ron Paul is it’s gold standard.

He WILL be on my ballot even if I have to write him in by hand.

Nice spin ABC! to make it seem as some sort of attack vs latinos, He never said that..why not include the ‘other’ part of the interview where he says the DRUG WAR is to blame for all of this to begin with.
Finally a politician who isnt going to change his views just to win votes and he’s getting flamed? lol its easy to see who the ‘establishment’ hates.

I am hispanic, and I approve of Dr. Ron Paul’s message. If this to be a just land, then all people should be held to respect the law and their neighbor. Ron Paul 2012

Posted by: jrifter | October 4, 2011, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

Dr Paul’s warning is very wise. Ron Paul is no racist, He is a principled libertarian which means he holds consistantly to the principle of Individual Rights for everyone to their own Life, Liberty and Property, ‘justly acquired’. Understand that and then you will understand how Ron Paul would be against the Drug War, Racism, for ending the Income Tax, letting free markets get People back to work, insured and off welfare and against the 6 wars we now have going on.

Thank you Dr. Paul for inspiring courage in our public discourse.

We may disagree on some points but you have restarted a flame where intellectual honesty is beginning to be valued again over political correctness.

That has been long dead and you deserve any honor that comes from America finding itself again from your spark.

does anybody know about the atrocities our government and cia have done to south american countries? such as ahem.. Venezuela 2002/03 (trying to overthrow Chavez (which is a great democratically elected leader) with dictators because he wouldnt give the us oil) – Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, Cuba and many many many more. please read more into this if you dont know… it will make you sick.

with Ron Paul in office there would be no more tyranny abroad. we wouldn’t be forcing out leaders that dont comply with our demands with dictators that ruin their country.

this alone should get every vote from citizens that came from south of the united states.

Why are some people claiming this to be a hitpiece? This seems very neutrally written, and I see nothing in here that should cause any outrage by anyone.

Posted by: Gavin | October 4, 2011, 9:17 pm 9:17 pm

“A different interpretation of the 14th Amendment” – yeah, the original interpretation. The 14th Amendment wasn’t written so illegal immigrants could have anchor babies. It had nothing to do with immigrants at all.

I didn’t know author of this article, so I googled Jason M. Volack. As a result, i got dozen or so articles in which Ron Paul is negatively depicted or his words were twisted to fit author’s “point”. I’m not Ron Paul supporter, but I found this kind of writing highly unprofessional and biased. Not to mention that people above me have a point.
It’s a shame that adult can write so biased articles.
Great job ABC. You have fallen in my eyes for one notch once more.

Ron Paul is the only one who wants to repeal NAFTA… the same program that made it cheaper for big US agriculture companies to undercut / undersell Mexican farmers in Mexico which sent them across the boarder just to survive? It’s just as bad as the BRACERO PROGRAM in the 1940′s! Ya know, the biggest civil rights violation committed by the US Government since SLAVERY!?

Way to skew his words ABC, sounding more like fox news these days.

I thought ron paul missunderstood 3 questions asked of him. First, the issue wasn’t about restricting americans from the weapons, but from restricting the sale of assault weapons to drug cartels.. And i think Ron Paul grossly under recognized the issue. Maybe funding a liberation army with the illegals, that’s an idea and a justified one. Let them return fighting for mexico, and work for trade prosperity in a new free mexico. That’s where paul should be be. he missed the question on Christy, weither it was a sign of disatisfaction with the other candidates, and he missed the question about the Republicans not being about economy. He should have said the rhetoric is there and the constituency is there, but the liars are there too. He kind of did, but he needed to take the oppurtunity to inform.

Posted by: Joe20000000 | October 4, 2011, 11:38 pm 11:38 pm

I don’t think Ron Paul will support war with the mexican drug cartels, but he should consider it. he should work with mexico. Directly. Mexico needs a free trade. I don’t know the logistics, but i’m sure seizure of properties can be awarded to mexican communties. They need to legalize drugs.

Children born in America are NOT automatically citizens. The law states in part that “both parents have to be subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. When you enter this country illegally, you are NOT subject to the jurisdiction of the United States – paying taxes, etc…. Most liberals don’t bother to bring this portion of the law up, but its there, and there are several Supreme Court cases that further define it. This “birthright citizenship” was a concept created by the executive branch (which has no constitutional authority to do so). Dr. Paul is 100% correct, as he is on everything else. This is why only Rick Santorum challenges him on his principle, and never the law. If Hispanics supported Ron Paul, they would have both protection (for legal American Hispanics) and a pathway to citizenship that doesn’t burden our economic resources. Its just that simple.

I’m disappointed how Ramos reacts the same way as all the others do when RP gives him an insightful practical solution to a huge catastrophe that NOBODY else will even mention.

And how did Ramos react after RP explained that the Drug War must be dismantled if the border body count and murders are ever going to cease? There was no response from Ramos. No follow up. No recognition that RP’s solution strikes the root of the violence.

Unfortunately liberals are just as blood thirsty and warlike as their statist conservative cousins. Their only solutions to any violent disaster is MORE VIOLENCE and MORE WAR. In Ramos’ case–judging by all that he seemed to be capable of countenancing during his discussion with RP about the 40,000 border murders–only more GUN WAR waged by the omnipotent state against the people is worth discussing.

RP: “But you can’t deal with that problem if you don’t want to even talk about the drug war. That’s where the criminality is, and the corruption is, that’s where the gang wars are. It’s over the drugs that we have to deal with.”
