Santorum: Early Primaries and Caucuses “a Travesty”
Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum called the front loading of the primary schedule a “travesty” and placed blame for it on Mitt Romney and Rick Perry in an interview for ABC News’ ” Subway Series with Jonathan Karl.”

“If we are looking at Christmas Eve or Christmas day caucuses or the day after Christmas day caucuses this is a, this is really a travesty for the election nomination process of the president,” Santorum told ABC News. “Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and we can shift it back. It doesn’t have to go back to the original schedule but at least shift it back until it is out of the holiday period.
A series of steps by Florida, South Carolina and most recently Nevada which just set its primary at January 14th has raised the possibility that either New Hampshire or Iowa could move their contests to the month of December, a move that Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn just today said his state at least would work to avoid.
Santorum suggested that the leading candidates, especially Romney, are trying to “disrupt” the process to have the primaries so early that other candidates simply won’t have the time to build enough momentum to take on the front runners.
“Well this is clearly Mitt Romney and Rick Perry [who] I am sure are very interested in running the clock out,” Santorum told ABC News. “They are in a position where they have resources and name recognition. The shorter the time frame the less opportunity for other candidates to come up and catch them from behind.”
Santorum suggested that the candidates should come together and urge the states to all move their dates back to avoid the need to campaign anywhere over the holiday.
“Look I am sad that we may have a caucus the day after Christmas,” Santorum said. ”It is going to absolutely affect the holiday season and for people in Iowa and for the country that should be focusing on a very important thing which is the birth of our savior instead , because of someone’s games to shorten the time frame.”
The full interview with Rick Santorum, including his sharply critical assessments of Herman Cain and his economic plan, will appear Friday on ABC News’ “Top Line.”

Dear Rick, Your poll numbers are in the toilet and it is really worth using Jesus to try to score some cheap political point?

LOL…LOL…nothing like an ‘emotional pander’ to the nut balls of the religious right extremists….is there Rick? LOL…LOL This type of ‘candidate’ (and i use that term very loosely) is so pathetic.

Santorum is just amazing. I don’t think trying to be more Christian is going to help his campaign. Santorum isn’t winning, because he just isn’t worth it. Before, during, or after Christmas.

I was ready to jump all over Santorum. Instead, I should jump all over the headline writer. Santorum specifically refers to December 24-26, and I’m sure few would disagree that it’s a bad idea to have primaries on any of those days. The crux of the article is earlier primaries benefit the current frontrunners–not a surprise. Shame on ABC for trying to stir up something that isn’t there.

Republican infighting. Love it. While the republicans are busy fighting each other, Obama’s ratings look better and better. See? The Republicans are far more interested in their little political games than focusing on what Americans need. And we pay them for this?

“They are in a position where they have resources and name recognition. ”
I thought Santorum had all the name recognition he could handle, thanks to Google……

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are big parties celebrating materialism; they have nothing to do with a man who allegedly lived long ago and preached that the mateerial is irrelevant and only the spiritual matters.

Like he should care. He isn’t going to be in the White House, isn’t even going to be the GOP nominee. Try the God thing, Rick. I mean it worked for Perry…for a while.

GREGGW: I am not sure what Christmas Eve and Christmas mean to Santorum , because I do not pretend to be able to read his heart and mind. However, I do have an issue with your statement. For you, Christrmas Eve and Christmas may be about parties. Do NOT assume that it is about parties for everyone. There are still some of us who celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. That percentage is large enough that I think caucuses the day after Christmas should be avoided. And by the way, I am not a fan of Santorum.

This really has nothing to do with religion. The fact that Santorum tried to make it about “Christ” doesn’t mean that’s what it’s really about. Bottom line is: anytime around the holidays is going to prevent people from coming out to vote. People are traveling, home with their kids who are out of school, busy with family and holiday traditions, etc. It’s not in the best interest of America to have fewer people out voting because of the timing. And Caucusing takes a lot longer than simply voting. It’s an all night endeavor. Very inconvenient. May the best man or woman win Fairly – not by changing the rules.

Santorum doesn’t have to campaign during that period of time. It is his own personal choice.
