Obama Administration to Delay New 15-Cent Christmas Tree Tax

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is going to delay implementation and revisit a proposed new 15 cent fee on fresh-cut Christmas trees,  sources tell ABC News. The fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2009, was first announced in the Federal Registry yesterday and has generated criticism of President Obama from conservative media outlets.

The well-trafficked Drudge Report is leading with the story, linking to a blog by David Addington, a former top aide to then-Vice President Dick Cheney, at the conservative Heritage Foundation assailing the president thus: “The economy is barely growing and nine percent of the American people have no jobs. Is a new tax on Christmas trees the best President Obama can do? And, by the way, the American Christmas tree has a great image that doesn’t need any help from the government.”

The National Christmas Tree Association says the fee would fund a program “designed to benefit the industry and will be funded by the growers” and is “not expected to have any impact on the final price consumers pay for their Christmas tree.” According to the Federal Registry, the proposed Christmas Tree Promotion Board, which would be funded by the new fee, would launch a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” and to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States.”

White House spokesman Matt Lehrich told ABC News that despite some media coverage, “I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama Administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What’s being talked about here is an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional campaign, similar to how the dairy producers have created the ‘Got Milk?’ campaign.”

Nonetheless, the criticisms have apparently had an impact as the program is now being delayed.

“USDA is going to delay implementation and revisit this action,” Lehrich said.

Bah, humbug?

This did sound similar to Obama’s “business-friendly regulations”, where he puts a requirement on businesses that they didn’t want to do by themselves.

IF $0.15 on a Christmas Tree is a real deal breaker things are worse than I had ever imagined. (You can’t even get a stamp for that!)

how many of the “Taxes/feex/whatever” invasions of our pocketbook does the government have on us. How can the president unilaterally impose an administrative fee anyway. I thought that was congresses job. Sounds like Stalin to me.

Because it wasn’t a $5 fee like BOA, this was OK to do… right Obama?

Why doesn’t the National Christmas Tree Association impose a dues fee on it’s members and use those monies to fund it’s own program. Leave the government out of it.

Why aren’t prayer rugs being taxed?

Hair weave salons?

With a tax on Christmas trees and a tax on tanning beds, one could surmise that this administration was trying to target Christians and white people.

The National Christmas Tree Association already is a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. Why do they want to be on the government dole…? Never mind.

All this fuss is really about the fact that the Republican agenda of crushing Unions and butting into the personal lives of women was TROUNCED yesterday at the ballot box!!

Ha! Ha!

This is typical Republican strategy: create a grotesquely distorted caricature, broadcast the delusion at the top of your lungs, and hope that you manage to reinforce just enough cynicism and hopelessness to ensure the election of someone who truly cares only for funneling all of the country’s wealth and power into the hands of a tiny, corrupt elite.

Anybody who falls for Republican garbage propaganda deserves the fate Republicans would afford them.

It’s 15 cents people, once a year, and far from a tax initiated by the Obama administration, the proposal to create an assessment on tree growers to fund a research and promotion program through the USDA was begun by the industry during the Bush administration.

In February 2008, faced with declining sales, members of the National Christmas Tree Association created a task force to consider the merits of a checkoff program, which would allow the USDA to collect a fee from growers in order to fund research into marketing Christmas trees.

“Nature abhors a vacuum, and there is no vacuum in nature as empty as the leadership of the Republican Party today.”
Conservative columnist Richard Viguerie

Enough with you moronic Republican propagandists……

“According to the Federal Registry, the proposed Christmas Tree Promotion Board, which would be funded by the new fee, would launch a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace.” In other words they will get big bucks to sit on their brains, get all this money and do absolutly nothing.

Honestly if the National Christmas Tree Association wants to collect a 15 cent fee for their own promotional use (probably to hire lobbyists, huh?), no problem, but our government should have NO part in it.

I don’t see how a 15-cent tax to improve the marketing of Christmas trees really makes sense anyway.

#1 – Do Christmas trees really need “marketing”? Have you ever heard anyone say, “What? Bring a tree into the house and decorate it? I’ve never heard of such a thing.”
#2 – If you buy a tree, and pay the tax, you’ve already bought the tree, and any marketing would be kind of moot. What, do they want you to buy two trees?

I spent Christmas of 1990 deployed in Qatar while waiting for the beginning of Desert Storm. Not a lot of evergreens grow in Qatar, and it’s a relatively strictly Muslim country – yet we had a real Christmas tree in our tent, bought right downtown (but flown in from thousands and thousands of miles away). If that doesn’t show the lack of need to marketing, I don’t know what would.

Posted by: Mike K | November 9, 2011, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

Obama’s administration and cohorts are so tone deaf. It’s understood that it’d be like the Got Milk campaign and other associations that want to pool funds for marketing of their industry, but is that really the role of our gov’t? Of our Dept. of Agriculture? The complaint isn’t that it’s an Obama driven tax, but that it’s another example of our gov’t acting WAY outside of the Constitution and what our gov’ts focus and function should be. Gov’t needs to go on a diet and get much much leaner, and not wasting time on Christmas Tree Promotion Boards is a good start.

Power to levy tax belonged to Congress.
How is this “fee” distinquishable from a “tax” so that the administration can unilaterally demand it?

Obama speaks unkindly about Mr. Netanyahu and doesn’t seem to be pro Israel. . Then we find out Christianity is to be taxed via the freshly cut Christmas tree. Obama’s religion on a school application in Jakarta was ‘muslim’. Obama knows the Koran, rarely goes to church. He sat in Reverend Wright’s church for twenty years listening to anti-America ranting. National Prayer Day is cancelled but Muslims are allowed to celebrate their religion on the Capitol steps. Smartboxes are being installed in every home to “monitor” (read control) power usage. Will Obama now control whether we turn on our Christmas lights in December – or will he just develop a new tax for doing so? What next from this guy?

ahem….”the fee would fund a program “designed to benefit the industry and will be funded by the growers” and is “not expected to have any impact on the final price consumers pay for their Christmas tree.”

Seriously? Please. This is a tax. ALL fees, taxes, whatever you want to call them, get passed on to the consumer. ALL of them. That is a fact of life. Do we REALLY need ANOTHER industry board under the Dept. of Agriculture that will then go on to develop an eternal life of its own?

We have always bought “real” Christmas trees, but if Christmas tree growers are going to jump on the gub’mint gravy train, we’re just going to go ahead and buy a fake one. I don’t care if it is just 15 cents. Enough is enough.

Why do they need the govt to promote thier inducstry. Why not impose the fee to thier tree growing friends and do this on thier own? So to say there is no cost is a lie and will the USDA do this for free? There are no cost to the USDA? Its Christmas magic.
All the people saying its only 15 cents, I want to start a tax for me and I only want a penny from every citizen. What you can’t afford a penny! It ends up being $3 million in my pocket, but it only costs you a penny. Bunch of economic illiterate don;t get that these cumulative fees and taxes are a huge drag on the economy. For what? Does anyone honestly believe that 15 cents per tree sold (and this was only to be imposed on those selling more than 500 trees) would have actually funded any kind of government committee (bureaucracy). Hardly. It would have required the government (in this case the Dept. of Agriculture) to kick in federal funds as well. That would be taxpayer dollars. What a wonderful use of our money that would be.

Oh, and JIM, just in case you missed it, the voters in Ohio also voted to opt out of the Obamacare mandate as well.

$.15 leads the retailer or the wholesailer to increase their price by .30 or .50 or $1. LIBs seem to think that everything happens in a vaccuum. I guarantee that the price will increase by more than .15. But I’m with those who say “who cares?”. If I pay even $1 more for a Christmas tree this year, is it going to break me? This is where many on my side (conservatives) go off the rail. They vehemently oppose every tax, period, however miniscule, and that only serves to make them look like “extremists”. In fact, I’d guess that this was all part of Obama’s reelection plan. Float minscule tax hikes here and there and allow the far right-wing to look like idiots opposing them all. He didn’t implement the tax and now will certainly use it to try make the GOP look bad.

Hey, don’t back down, Mr. President. You only have to collect the tax on the sale of 100 trillion trees and you could eliminate the national debt (as at present.) At the rate of 27 million real trees sold in a year, like in 2010, it would only take you 3.7 million years to do it! Now that’s a deficit reduction plan that the Senate might sign on to.

What a way to “backdoor” an, as usual, Dem-imposed tax increase. Obama sure looks like a fool on this one; and the justification for the purpose of the tax is equally laughable. Really, people only give a flip about christmas trees once a year. Was the lobby going to promote itself year-round, jto tell us that it’s necessary to have a C-tree in our homes all the months of the year, convincing us that it would be good for our, personal environment? Or maybe this is a new low for POTUS, in that this is who he’s got to go to now for campaign contributions? Again, laughable. But this is just one more gaffe in a long line of them from this monumentally non-transparent, and incompetant, adinistration, with more bungles on the way.

This news still begs the question: Why do we HAVE a Dept. of Agriculture?

The total value of all farm produced products is $206.8 Billion dollars annually. The budget of the Department of Agriculture, which grows or produces nothing other than regulations, is $145.0 Billion dollars, or 70.1% of the value of all farm produce.

People don’t get it. This “christmas tree tax” was requested by the National Christmas Tree Association. They claim it is designed to fund a program “designed to benefit the industry and will be funded by the growers” and is “not expected to have any impact on the final price consumers pay for their Christmas tree.”

But that is a lie. What it does is impose a 0.15c tax on ALL Christmas Trees paid for by the consumer and then funneled into that special interest (the National Christmas Tree Association).

This is one of the worst ways our government works against the people and Republicans often do the same exact thing.

Dear Jim, you wrote:

Enough with you moronic Republican propagandists……”

Please enlighten this “moronic Republican propagandist”.
Why can’t the industry collect its own fund without the involving the government?
Is it because the answer to every problem is a new or higher tax or a new regulation?

Jealousy is a terrible thing.

What happend between seperation of Church and State? Christmas trees belong to a religious holiday.

Posted by: EllieEnlightened | November 9, 2011, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

Why are the growers asking for a tax that goes back to them? Just charge the middle man 15 cents more per tree and leave the government out of it.

Posted by: AZD2 | November 9, 2011, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

The National Christmas Tree Association asked for government permission in the first place so the fee could finance a board to encourage buying of cut trees. Reportedly the Christmas tree seller can pass on this fee to the customer if they want. Cut Christmas trees can be pricey and the economy may make that purchase a luxury – so turns out to be a not so astute marketing plan. However, Mr. Obama was getting the fallout – so he saw an opportunity to appear to “save” Christmas – kind of a marketing ploy for his own reelection – pretty slick mentoring from Mr. and Mrs. Clinton has really paid off for Mr. Obama – if not for the rest of America.

Posted by: Hmm | November 9, 2011, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm

This is simply discrimination against Christians… Obama tells us many times this is not a “Christian” nation… so I guess the only people that would buy a tree and pay the tax are Christians….. hmmm… almost reminds me of the tax he put on Tanning Salons…. who tans…. oh, white people….

Posted by: Nick | November 9, 2011, 2:55 pm 2:55 pm

Since when did Christmas trees need promotion, anyway? The only promotion needed is a calendar that reads “December.” And yes, it may only be $.15 now, but next year it will be $.50, and soon it will be $5. One we let them in (just like the income tax), it is easier to raise the amount then raise it again. Enough is ENOUGH!!!!

You can’t stop Republicans from going crazy. History proves that they go crazy.

Last week, they pushed an old lady down a flight of stairs while angrily confronting Occupy DC protesters. Not realizing that the morons had knocked their own friend down the stairs, they quickly blamed the protesters and accused them of doing it on purpose. When someone produced a video actually showing the right wingers knocking this poor old woman down the stairs, they said, “The protesters MADE me push the lady down the stairs… it’s their fault!”

Why do I bring this up? Because it just proves that some people will get angry over anything. And their anger blinds them even to their own actions. And when confronted with the consequences of their blind stupidity, it only makes them feel more angry and righteous. It a sort of mass hysteria. But we have seen this sort of behavior in history. It’s nothing new. But it is shocking that there are people in the media who exploit such tragic human weakness and encourage as though it is a virtue.

You simply cannot argue with someone in the Tea Party because their beliefs trump rationality…. and rational things that frustrate their beliefs only make them angrier. They feel like they are both a persecuted minority AND the secret champions of the will of the majority. This is the sort of psychology that leads to radical action…. and typically, these radical nuts, always imagine that their crazy actions are going to initiate sweeping changes, and that history will remember them as some kind of hero or something.

In person, do your best to coddle these people, because many are armed and believe in the myth of redemptive violence. And, I know from experience, they are precisely the type of people who will harass you in your home and bother your family if they think you might be a “leftist,” “atheist,” “union member,” “peace activists,” or “homosexual.” But as soon as they are sitting in front of their tvs or absorbed by their radios…. work hard to prevent their agenda from coming to fruition. Last Tuesday was a good start! But there is more work yet to be done.

Keep up the good work, America! The entire world is counting on you! We have to put regulations on the banking system. We have to promote a peaceful international relations and a strong UN. We have to work on good food, health care, education, democracy, and all human rights around the world. And, most urgently, we must do what we can to reverse the course of climate change.

Be brave. Be bold. Be gentle, but resolute…. and we will win. We won’t do it with guns. And we won’t do it with divine intervention. We will have to do it the honest way…. through peace, dialogue, education, and lots of hard work. We will have no heroes and no leaders (at least until we have political reform in the US)…. but we CAN make the world better.

As DAVEINTHED touched upon the effect of a tax such as this is only the beginning. The tax-code for a tree will be broken in sizes, types, regions, rarity, etc, etc, then taxed upon based on these categories. $.15 is really nothing to you or me, but put $.15 charged on 10,000,000 trees now you are talking about some serious cash $1.5M. Once implemented it will never be reversed, just increased for another research program, termites, bettles, sap, propgation, cutting tech., the list will go on and on and the tax for more R&D will INCREASE….

Christmas trees have nothing to do with a Christian holiday, or relate to separation of church and state. President Ulysses S. Grant began implementing Christmas as a federal secular holiday in the 1800s. And a Christmas tree, for those who are completely uneducated, has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. So those of you bringing up that point, it is now moot.

From taxes on tanning parlors, aimed solely at the types of people who need tans, to taxes on Christmas trees, aimed solely at those religions and those “types” that celebrate Christmas, among many other sneaky little prods and rules and regulations, there is only one “excuse” for this unnecessary government interference. Welcome to Germany of the 1930s, folks! It really is time to gently but gingerly lift this group out of the White House, carry them across the lawn, drop them off outside the fence on Pennsylvania Avenue, dust off their lapels as a courtesy, point them on their way, and tell them to never come back again! It would be fine if the NCTA wanted to impose it themselves. I just don’t know what the government has to do with it. Posted by: J_Dur | November 9, 2011, 3:13 pm 3:13 pm

The broader point here is that this is an excellent illustration for how the federal government has their fingers in every aspect of the economy. A “Christmas Tree Promotion Board” that requires approval by USDA? Seriously? This is lunacy. If anything the USDA should have their budget slashed and oversight removed from the vast majority of businesses. The USDA budget is a $1200 bill every year for every American household, and more than two thirds of it go to unnecessary food subsidies. This has gotten out of hand, and unfortunately for Obama one of the more absurd examples of the outrageous federal overreach has popped up under his watch.

But make no mistake, President Obama nor anyone else in the federal government would have had any problem with this unless the public expressed concerned. They are out of control, and will consume our entire economic lives if given the chance. The time has come to end this failed nightmare of central planning that is the modern US federal government, and go back to having a smaller, more responsible government that properly respects the Constitutional boundaries placed upon it.

I keep hearing the comment “It’s only 15 cents”. I agree. Since it’s only 15 cents how about your government doesn’t bother trying to steal such a minor amount from those that celebrate Christmas?

Posted by: Former Patriot | November 9, 2011, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

For those who say “Eh… 15 cents isn’t that much” remember that when income taxes were first started back in 1913 the tax rates were 1% and a whopping 7% for those making more than $500,000. I bet they said “Eh… 1% isn’t that much” back then too.

Posted by: Daryle Janisch | November 9, 2011, 3:16 pm 3:16 pm

Posted by: John Campbell | November 9, 2011, 3:16 pm 3:16 pm

Why is the federal government involved at all? If the association of tree growers wishes to tax itself to fund a program, it has the right to do so–sans any deed or any word from the feds.
The DofA should be DOA regarding the next administration’s request for funding for this department, which should be abolished.

People who are commenting that it is only $0.15 per tree are missing the point. Add that to all of the other taxes (or “voluntary fees” if you are a dishonest democrat) that people have to pay and it ends up being a very significant portion of our income. Government at all levels spends a combined amount which is something like 50% of GDP. That is way too much. No more taxes unless they are absolutely necessary. This silly TAX obviously isn’t absolutely necessary.

White House spokesman: “I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama Administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What’s being talked about here is an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional campaign…”

Um, NO. If the industry wanted to impose a fee on itself, it should feel free to do that voluntarily. If they need a _Federal regulation_ to do it, then it’s not the group imposing it on itself, it’s the Federal Government setting up a new bureaucracy, no doubt with well-paid lifetime sinecures for members of whatever boards and commissions and working committees and whatever the heck else this does.

The government has gotten us into a nearly unrecoverable hole by interfering with the free marketplace. STOP IT. DON’T DO THIS ANYMORE!

Posted by: Some guy in Texas | November 9, 2011, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

I’m confused. This “tax” was being implemented by and through the Department of Agriculture, yet this White House spokesman claims it was a self induced “fee” by a private group.

So what is it, a private group or the Department of Agriculture. If it’s a private group then they can impose their own internal fees. If it’s a tax then it’s a tax.

Can someone be a little more clear?

Don’t have the government collect it by force from unwilling growers. If it’s such a *#$ good idea, you should easily be able to talk the growers into _voluntarily_ funding it!

“The National Christmas Tree Association says the fee would fund a program “designed to benefit the industry and will be funded by the growers” and is “not expected to have any impact on the final price consumers pay for their Christmas tree.”” —– Oh, no, no..taxes on goods never impact the price of those goods to consumers, do they? No, they will cost, $30.99, or higher. Businesses will pocket the difference and tell customers “we have new costs from government that we have to bear.” Consumers always end up paying the cost of the tax, and usually a little extra.

So basically, the “National Christmas Tree Assoc”, NCTA, has lobbied the government to collect taxes from Christmas tree buyers to give to the NCTA so that it can advertise Christmas trees. This makes me NEVER want to buy a real Christmas tree AGAIN! How’s that for ya, NCTA??

“maintain and *expend* existing markets for Christmas trees;”?
Freudian slip?

Posted by: dave | November 9, 2011, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

A trade organization to promote Christmas trees? Modeled after the “Got Milk?” promotion? Oh, great, that’s just what we need. Prices going up because because of marketing scheme designed to put money in the pockets of the trade organization (and its government cronies). Are they going to institute minimum prices on Chrstmas trees, like they do in milk here in NY?

Posted by: Tom in NY | November 9, 2011, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Why tax the very thing you are trying to promote? I think most economists would agree that taxing imported artificial trees from China and using it to promote real US trees would cause a positive result. Oh but we musn’t hurt the feelings of those Chinese workers who don’t get unfunded unemployment benefit extensions paid with money borrowed from … China.

Christmas trees are a Christian religious symbol anyway. If you can decide to set up a federal agency to promote them then we get to decide on school prayer in own back yards. Deal?

Posted by: Mike M | November 9, 2011, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

If this is “funded by the growers”, as the National Christmas Tree Association states, why does it need government involvement? The association should just ask its members to voluntarily pay the fee to the association and it create the new non-government board and its activities.

For all those people complaining that “It’s just 15 cents”, I bet you would complain about someone on Wall Street getting 15 cents per widget and making millions. I don’t care if it’s a fraction of a cent, it’s yet another stupid fee/tax/addition that is NOT needed. Whether its the industry (who WILL up the price of the tree) or added directly as a tax to the purchaser, it’s coming from our pockets. NO THANK YOU!

Posted by: Earl | November 9, 2011, 4:05 pm 4:05 pm

I hear people on here say it is only 15 cents. Well start adding that 15 cents to about everything you do, eat and enjoy , and you will see that you are being taxed to death. Taxes are higher now than ever before . Back in the 50″s there were not all of these hidden taxes. So when Obama tells you taxes are lower than ever, think about just about every single thing you do has a tax on it.

MIKE M: Christmas trees are in no way a “Christian religious symbol”. No more so than the Easter Bunny. Christmas trees have only been in fashion for a couple of hundred years or so. And, for reference, the Easter Bunny is adapted from fertility symbols that are much, much older than your Christianity. The hare was the symbol of the Iceni, Boudica’s people, my ancestors, and their principal Goddess rode one in to battle. They must have been bigger back then. Or She must have been tiny. One or the other.

They can raise it 100% as far as I am concerned. We have close to 500 acres between the 2 farms, and cedar trees grow like weeds.

Hmmmm . . . how Constitutional is a tax imposed upon a product used only by members of a certain religious group? How does the “Koran tax” sound? I’m sure that this has nothing to do with the muslim belief that some infidels may practice their beliefs in a low-key manner, so long as they pay an infidel tax (the ‘jizyah’).

3. Obama imposes a tax on the public and GETS IT BACK in political donations.

“Obama: Don’t blame me, it was the christmas tree association’s fault! They actually asked to be taxed and promised to not pass it onto you, so you would like them more!” Really? Seriously? I thought the article on drudge was a post from The Onion or something, a complete joke. Now that I see this, I am even more perplexed and it’s not funny at all! It reads like a scene from the movie Idiocracy! Yeah, like I am going to believe a Christmas tree association thought the world would like Christmas trees more if they were the sole cause of a tax hike of any kind right before Christmas, in terrible economic times. Yep, that sounds like a winner of a plan to me! Maybe Bible manufacturers could start requesting new taxes on their books too so that more people would convert and improve their public image! Brilliant! Not.

Posted by: Anne | November 9, 2011, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

Let’s all take a breath and try to understand the facts.

Many industries operate promotion boards under the authority of the US government. They do so because voluntary promotion programs just don’t work. If we made funding the fire department optional, our houses would burn down. If you don’t make the fee mandatory, many (even those who support the concept) would not pay their fair share.

So an industry goes to the government for the authority to tax themselves. Industry members (not taxpayers) pay a tiny fee for each tree, head of cattle, gallon of milk, etc. The money is spent on research, advertising, PR, websites and all sorts of tactics to help increase consumer demand. These boards pay a user fee to USDA to cover costs of the government overseeing their programs.

Let me say it again. The boards actually pay the government, not the other way around.

Small family farms benefit from marketing programs they could never afford on their own. Industry members (farmers) make the decisions about how to spend the funds to help increase demand. Every program has a provision to allow the industry to shut down the program is they don’t want it any more.

These programs are not what you think. They have been around for decades, and have been approved under every president since the first program started. This is not a democrat versus republican issue. This is not a sign that the government is growing out of control. This is about a bunch of farmers trying to stay in business by banding together and making sure everyone pays in their fair share.

This is a non-issue. Leave the christmas tree farmers alone. They are trying to survive and support their families – just like you.

Posted by: SinTexas | November 9, 2011, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

The real issue is that the association is using the government’s monopoly on force to force the growers to fork .15 cents per tree. What justification is there to force a grower to join ranks? .15cents per tree can really ad up. The growers should be given the free choice to enter into an agreement or not.

Posted by: Ray | November 9, 2011, 5:17 pm 5:17 pm

My first question is why is the government getting involved with mandating a christmas tree tax that goes to fund an agency for the promotion of christmas trees?

If the association of christmas tree farmers want to promote christmas trees they should pony up their own money and fund it. Not have the government mandate a tax to create an agency to do so.

We don’t need any more agencies and we don’t need anymore taxes. The government should be in the business of securing our national defense. PERIOD.

I didn’t read the comments in detail but I didn’t see reference to administration & enforcement. The cost of that should diminish the net to the Trade Group to about a penny or less per tree (or increase the cost of government by 14 cents/tree).

The following makes too much sense to ever be implemented:
The government would come out way ahead with this plan: Every individual in the country, every year is to send in $25. to the Feds and $10 to the State for which the governments will (a) not add any fees onto popular stuff, (b) cancel all the existing fees on popular stuff and (c) not create any more programs funded by by tobacco taxes while undertaking a concerted effort to reduce tobacco use and the total tobacco tax revenue use to pay the existing programs.

How is it not a violation of the 1st Amendment to create a special tax targeting a specific religious group? Are they also going to invent a special prayer rug tax to help improve people’s opinion of Ramadan? A menorah tax to improve people’s opinion of Hannukah? How is it any of the government’s business to influence what people think about certain religious symbols?

Posted by: GoRangers2011 | November 9, 2011, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm

It’s not a tax. It’s a fee paid by Christmas tree producers to fund a promotional program to boost sales of fresh-cut trees, which have been steadily losing market share to artificial ones. The Christmas tree farmers requested it.

The same system is used by other agricultural groups to promote their products – remember all those ads for milk, cheese and “The Incredible Edible Egg”? Same thing. It enables producers of agricultural commodities to promote their products in a way that wouldn’t be possible if everyone acted independently. It’s good for business, and the economy.

I’m not in the Christmas tree business, but I truly sad to see so many people completely be lead astray by news headlines. First, the 15 cents is not a tax; but a self-help program on the part of Christmas tree growers. According to a 1996 generic congressional piece of legislation, any agricultural crop can form such a self-help program to conduct research and education, and promotion. There is no taxpayer money involved.
These programs are formed and operate under strict government oversight; the producers themselves must cover any and all cost of government oversight. Tree growers, as with many other crops pay all the fees and any and all costs involved in collecting and even for the cost to publish the rule in the Congressional record. The reason the rule is published is because you must ensure that all of the Christmas tree growers who will be required to pay the 15 cents per tree have all been properly notified of their self-imposed assessment.
This is one of many similar programs that have allowed our US agricultural to remain viable — they have existed under both Democratic and Republican administrations. I didn’t vote for Pres. Obama, but he’s got nothing to do with this; to blame him is just inappropriate; just as in appropriate is his administration’s action in delaying the program.
The people who scream the loudest are those who are most ignorant of the facts–Democrats and Republicans alike should look beyond the distorted headlines before jumping to conclusions. Folks Christmas trees are not being taxed, but are definitely going paper and plastic from China. Why not allow the growers to conduct a self-help program, authorized by Congress to exist, as long as there is no cost to the taxpayer?
As Americans we are certainly are a sad lot—we have the world’s best tools and resources at our disposal but we don’t bother seeking real facts. We have sadly mistaken the one-line news crawls and 140 character tweets as being informed. This is the same electorate that elected the Congress with the lowest approval rating in history and is being entrusted to choose our next leaders. Indeed a frightening thought.

Posted by: smithcreek | November 9, 2011, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm

Yes, 15 cents is a deal breaker. We have to start somewhere to reign in this administration and their belief that the public can shell out 15 cents here, 10 cents there, and a dollar or two somewhere else in support of non-essential vote-grabbing projects. I am one or the fortunate that have a job, but like so many, I’ve had to tighten my belt considerably in the last few years and may not even be able to afford a Christmas tree this year. What irks me the most is that liberal administrations and their judges are hell bent on ripping the heart out of Christianity and it’s holidays and then has the audacity to pretend to promote “Christmas” trees. What a farce.

Posted by: Will | November 9, 2011, 6:23 pm 6:23 pm

Why does the government give a rats rear end about Christmas trees. Do people not know about them? Do they need promotion?

If a private company or collection of companies wants to promote something let them pay for it. Why should anyone, through their tax dollars, pay for anything to do with Christmas trees?

“It will not affect price” —- Right. Sure.

I wasn’t aware that the image of Christmas trees was tarnished. We have lots of Xmas tree sellers where I live and not one of them seems to receive any grief from the surrounding community. And their businesses seem to reflect the well-being of the surrounding community. And since when does a privately run industry need the help of The Messiah?

Posted by: ClearyJ | November 9, 2011, 6:29 pm 6:29 pm

yeah only 15 cents on a tree to go with the tax of 30 cents per gallon of gas from the federal govt the 20 cents by state, the 8% sales tax per item purchased, the car registration fees and taxes, the mandatory fees on cell phones, the taxes on our paychecks by the fed and state govt, the fees added on top of our water and electric bills and gas all it is is another fee on top of another fee then that gets taxed so so these people can have a job? Its time for a change vote them all out it’s not a democrat or republican issue it’s a failing government issue just wipe em all out and start over.

Another lie by Obama because this is plain and simple being bought out by another lobbyist which he has always said will not influence his administration. But then again could be another attack on Christmas trees itself. Either way he is pathetic.

While every agricultural industry does the same exactly thing through the USDA and DOA, it does make for bad PR that its XMAS trees. But the facts are that fresh-tree sales declined from 37 million in 1991 to 31 million in 2007, according to the USDA. Artificial tree sales, meanwhile, nearly doubled, to 17.4 million, from 2003 to 2007. Thus the marketing is needed

Nationwide, there are about 12,000 commercial Christmas tree farms, with production particularly heavy in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Thats a substantial agriculture industry.

The little farmers under 500 arent touched by this tax, and its all industry driven, not Obama driven. The industry started it, will pay for it, and will benefit from it. sure consumers will pay a dear 15 cents extra, but you pay for marketing $$ on everything you buy, so whats the problem?

Im sure the smaller tree farmers will benefit nicely from the marketing and advertising that this fee pays for, and then you wont hear an apology from them about this griping about this 15 cents. shortsighted nitwits

Still, it is really more something the industry’s boards could do without govt intervention I would hope. But Milk, Beef, Soy, Corn, Sugar, Cotton — they all do the same exact thing. Where do you think Got Milk? came from. Small and midsize Dairy farmers surely werent griping when their revenue ticked up thanks to industry marketing that was paid for by similar Checkoff programs

It would cost the GUMernment much more than 15 cents to collect the tax prorated per tree. Heck a whole new treasury department branch with each employee getting $150 grand in wages and benefits would be needed.

This is a non-story. $.15 is totally insignificant. Other agricultural sectors have done this for years, for example the “beef checkoff” program resulting in the familiar marketing slogan “Beef… it’s what for dinner”. What’s interesting to me is how the Obama Administration has weenied out over a non-issue, simply because they see negative political implications. Could we get some leadership from someone somewhere PLEASE?????

Of course the repubs want it. It is another subsidy for agriculture. They already give money (subsidies) to the farmers. The tree growers are no different, they are farming an agricultural product.

So as it stands, people who liked to be lied to, cheated on and stolen from (repugs) are the same people who distort the truth.

The Christmas Tree Association asked for the fee of 15cents to fund research and fund ads to encourage people buying live trees. A lot of folks have been buying fake ones. It is no different than the ‘Got Milk?’ ads. This 15 cent tax is simply a way for the Association to raise funds, it isn’t a government thing at all.

Posted by: Mike Arnold | November 9, 2011, 10:27 pm 10:27 pm

I guess nobody read the story before commenting. The Christmas Tree growers decided to place this fee on members to promote fresh trees. The government did not place this tax at all!. For some reason the growers are having the government handle the money for their, “got milk?” type of promotion. I wonder why they didn’t administer the fund themselves? Perhaps because is would be too expensive to do so. Hiring administrators and such. The government will do it for them at no cost. Maybe, huh?

If the Agriculture Department is collecting the tax, it’s a government tax.

This is Not like the Got Milk or Beef campaigns that were voluntarily funded by their industry members, this is the Government imposing taxes on all growers and delivering proceeds to one organization that wants to promote their business.

This organization does not represent all the growers that are being forced to pay the tax, and was not selected by all the growers to champion their cause.

Up next – a $5 steering wheel tax to benefit the U.S. Automotive industry. It would be used “to launch a program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the automobile building industry’s position in the marketplace; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the automobile building industry.” The tax was requested by the National Automobile Builder’s Association – a coalition of labor unions and automotive builders and suppliers.

Is this our government double-talking or the lame stream media? The article starts by saying the US Department of Agriculture is imposing the fee at the behest of the National Christmas Tree Association. By the end of the article a spokeperson is saying it’s a fee imposed by an industry trade group on itself. So what does the Department of Agriculture have to do with it? If the USDA is involved, or any other government agency, we can bet it will be money out of our pockets. How many fifteen cents will it take to pay off a 13 trillion dollar debt?

Posted by: Russ | November 10, 2011, 1:27 am 1:27 am

By using the power of the government to institute this law it forces all growers to contribute to the fund that will be controlled by a select few. This way it is Constitutional according to a Supreme Court decision in 2005 (Johanns v. Livestock Marketing Association) in which it was ruled that people/groups can be compelled to contribute to speech that is put forth by the government (which is the aim of this Christmas Tree Tax). USDA and Customs will be collecting the money. If it’s collected by the government under the penalty of law then it must be a tax. The government will be promoting the consumption of trees while a select few members will run the so-called “Christmas Tree Board.” The most outrageous aspect of the law is that the majority of growers can vote to raise the tax on the others. And since it’s a law there’s no provision to opt out of this (unlike a voluntary private campaign).

What they should have done is tax the cheap Chinese crap instead. But, no, heaven forbid we tax anything from China.

Why does Obama hate America so much?

A few comments: (1) For the hordes of you who do not appear to own or know how to use a dictionary, there is a computer tool called “Spellcheck”. Oh wait, that would require that you know what a homophone is. No you say? Whoops, there is that pesky old dictionary rearing its ugly head again. And then there are the words such as its and it”s. Don’t see the difference? Oh my, never could grasp that punctuation stuff in grammar school, huh? Doi you really expect intelligent people to take you seriously when you present yourselves as illiterates? (2) The holiday is Christmas, not xmas. (3) Use of a Christmas tree is a custom; it is not a religious symbol. Scholarly consensus places its origin to Germany, probably around the year 1600.

And to the one person, Voice of Reason, who knows the difference between a fact and a rumor, between fact and innuendo, betweeen fact and hype, thank you for the breath of fresh air.

I am sick of all these fees. If the Christmas tree industry wants to charge extra for each fee to promote themselves let them do it themselves, not as a mandate from Obama. If the Christmas tree industry was truly behind this I hope they go out of business. For one, I will either buy a Canadian tree or a fake tree. It is time for us to get rid of these hidden fees and all the taxes. It is time for a revolution against the government.

trying to post again, sorry if it double posts.
Time to start OCCUPY CHRISTMAS…..

But seriously, this tax is ridiculous. It’s not the amount, but the fact that it is the Administration that is imposing this fee to CREATE another gov’mnt agency that really does nothing. The beef commercials are somewhat lame, except for the score (some of them). …….Aha! Who benefits from this tax the most? Perhaps a National Big Company, or a Crappy BS company, or maybe even an Absolute Bullocks and Crap will benefit a nice chunk of change. (Sorry I used the word Crap too many times. But hey….) we know that NBC and President Obama are close (especially when NBC was given a break on taxes (I seem to remember zero tax). This tax/fee is small, yes, however once it gets going, who says it will stay just 15 cents? If 200 million trees are bought (more or less) that will only put 30 million into this (not yet created) Agency. That is not a lot of revenue for them, maybe they could tax it $1.00? (300 million), and tell the Christmas Tree Sellers to include it in any verbal or written price, yet not allowed to divulge this to the customer? I cringe at the fact that fast-food restaurants and others have to post the calories. Most, if not all of the fast-food chains have this information on location, typically in a folded pamphlet. I guess it was too much for “Us UnEdjubbicatchid” (edge-oo-ba -cate-chid) people to have to take time to read it, and make a decision…now fast food prices are going up once again(except for the delicious dollar menu) *que Homer Simpson salivating at the sign of a donut* the reason? They then had to buy new signs, and I know what people will say, “big deal, a sign is only $x.00.” But again, it’s the way it seems to be now, “taxation without representation” if you will. The founding fathers tried to put a “checks and balances” government into place, but over the last few years, but now President Obama’s Administration skips congress and tax (ahem, fee) us, sort of like a certain King in 1776. We are not a Democracy! Democracies don’t work, they divide a Winner/Loser mentality, a ‘
Who cares about the ones that lost, I don’t care what it will do to the country in the future, and I want this now!’ mentality. That is the reason they set up our government as a constitutional republic so we would have our members of congress representing and voting, *cough*, the way his district (or state in the case of the Senate) wants to vote.
Very rarely I have seen any Congress member actually vote the will of the people they represent on all 3 sides R – I – D. Now it seems that our President is choosing not to involve us with any decisions because ‘Yes He Can! and Yes He Will!’ Taking our ‘voice’ out of the picture should not be tolerated no matter what side is doing it. If the “Occupiers” want to protest, maybe they should set up shop on the White House front lawn, and defecate and urinate all over, at least there will be some free food- Auntie Michelle’s garden….mmmmmmmmm Or-Gannnnn-ic, Mmmmmmm. I apologize for such a long post, however I do believe that something such as this should be identified for what it is – a dictatorship which is normally how democracies end up, the leader takes the helm, and proceeds to weed out the ones who actually have morals, integrity, and honor. Dear Lord, let us not return to where we once were, under a self proclaimed king, (regardless of which side is in ‘Da House’, or ‘the Coop’, or ‘Casa de Blanca’, in other words, the White House’.

(Flamers, Flame On!)

Obviously many posters don’t understand it’s not the fact that it’s “just fifteen cents”…Rather, it’s the principle of the thing, though I realize that principles are fast-fading in this country, from the top downward.

For those who claim it will be paid by the growers is like those who claim fees imposed on banks will have no effect on accountholders. You’d have to be pretty stupid not to figure that the costs of doing business are passed onto consumers, just like taxes imposed on the super rich will ultimately also be passed on to the lowest economic tier who provide them with money to begin with.

The Chief Loser shouldn’t be screwing around with these ill-conceived popularity schemes. He ought to be doing everything in his power to promote real, working wage, middle class jobs and building taxpayer and consumer confidence, rather than contributing even more to the mass confusion.

Posted by: FlushTheToilet | November 10, 2011, 7:05 am 7:05 am

Only Congress has the power to levy taxes. What this White House did AGAIN was to trampled on the CONSTITUTION. Democrats have no respect for rules put together by the PEOPLE. They intend to make up their own rules as they go along. That is a DICTATORSHIP> If you want to be ruled by a dictator, vote for Obama the unilateral rule maker.

this tax would have to go through both houses, obama cannot enforce this on his own. This is just another attack on Christmas, as we all know obama is muslem.

Starve the financially-challenged BEAST!
Believe it or not, Leftists and B. Hussein Obama psychophants (yes, i know), the Xmas tree industry figured this out many years ago, i.e., the planting, replenishment, etc. The problem – IF one even exists – is the price of the trees. Even here in MI where they grow all over the place (I planted a blue spruce in our yard years ago), the prices for fresh trees are almost prohibitive.
Here’s the solution: either UN-elect BHO or cut down your own tree, preferably legally, but …

Hmmm. If it truly is “an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself”, why the need for a new federal regulation mandating the “fee” (i.e., tax)?

Posted by: David | November 10, 2011, 8:24 am 8:24 am

Ditto with Karl Magnus . . . . why doesn’t the industry group just assess its members through its fee structure and start promoting the product itself . . . why does a separate government board need to be set up . . . exactly what the problem is . . . how did libs infiltrate the christmas tree producers . . they don’t even like christmas . . . or at least the reason for the season!!

What a poorly written story! Story slanted to not report the truth as to why the tax was proposed or why under whose rules the tax aspect was implemented. Blame it on Obama is the only mantra the Republicans know even if it’s their own program. LIES! REPUBLICANS! LIES! REPUBLICANS! LIES! REPUBLICANS! LIES! REPUBLICANS! INTERCHANGEABLE!

Is it true that the Obama’s have said there will be no religious scenes of any kind in the WH and the Christmas trees will be called Holiday trees? He did say we were not a Christian nation which I haven’t gotten over yet either. What are we then?

Posted by: Freedom | November 10, 2011, 9:19 am 9:19 am

So many people here saying “it’s only 15 cents, so what?” The income tax started as a 1% tax “only on the wealthiest 10% of Americans.” In a few years, it would be a 15 DOLLAR per tree tax, just speaking from experience.

Posted by: Kent | November 10, 2011, 9:25 am 9:25 am

Freedom, what we are is a country filled with all sorts of religions. All taxpayers deserve representation, whether they are Christian or not. There ya go, if you people are so stuck on having it stated that the United States of America is a CHRISTIAN nation, then those of us who aren’t shouldn’t have to pay taxes anymore because we are not represented. No taxation without representation. Sound familiar? Sad part is to most of you, probably not.

Posted by: Bryan | November 10, 2011, 9:32 am 9:32 am

Are we supposed to be stupid?! Why would the Federal Government need to be involved in collecting a fee that “will not be passed along to consumers” that will be paid by the growers to support programs that increase industry sales? If the industry wants it and doesn’t truly intend to pass it along to consumers then they could raise the money directly wadding the oversight cost of involving the the Department of Agriculture, adding an accounting burden on sellers, etc. Ridiculous.

If you saw it on Fox or heard it from Rush, then it’s of course not true.

The fact that the majority of Americans call themselves Christians does NOT make us a “Christian nation”. We are a secular nation, a Constitutional Republic, governed by the rule of law and NOT by someone’s fairy tale belief system. If you want to live in a “Christian nation”, move to Uganda. There, the “Christians” in charge are trying to make homosexuality a capital offense, punishable by death…….

Not one more penny for taxes for programs that the government has no business being in. Almost 15 trillion in debt and so many serious problems to fix, and we’re supposed to give this stupidity any kind of credibility? Really? Paying for private business marketing?

It’s not the amount, it’s the principle of the thing. No more money for nothing. And as a former CA native, I’d like to offer that this is how CA is now on the verge of bankruptcy. !5 cents here, nickel there until you cannot afford to live. Government grows and the people live on the knife’s edge.

If you want to know why I’m a tea partier, you’re looking at it. Spent a lifetime paying for things that the government shouldnt’ be involved in, and going into massive debt as a result, while risking the future of ourselves and our children.

I always buy live trees, I love Christmas, but Christmas tree people, PAY FOR YOUR OWN MARKETING. And to the government? No common sense, no ethical core, only wants to feed and grow itself.

Delayed or not, BHO has once again showed himself for what he is…A Hater! Such a sad liitle boy who obviously was raised by commies. Reminds me of the children’s claymation “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”. The town was ruled by the miserable Burgermeister Meisterburger. I remember the town was bleak and gray with sad children everywhere … Till Kris Kringle showed up. These truths of the human heart are timeless and telling. There is nothing hidden that will be kept secret for long. BHO has bit by bit shown himself for who he is by his actions. A miserable hater.

“Nothing New”, you might want to work on your reading comprehension, as it is quite clear you don’t get it. The phony outrage by conservatives is quite ridiculous.

1. Obama isn’t the one asking for the fee, our countries tree growers are. They WANT to pay this fee to increase sales which have been declining in favor of plastic trees.

2. They want to PROMOTE Christmas trees. How on earth would this make Obama a “hater” of Christmas?

But hey, if you’re really upset about the whopping 15¢, go buy a made in China plastic tree, instead of an American grown real one. Patriotic Hypocrites.

Gee taxing the Christins now huh? Guess the Obama Admin is showing that he really does support the Musilm community more than the rest. Next tax will be on candles during Hanaka (spelling?) for teh Jewish community… Ooops, did I just give him an idea? This tax is wrong on so many levels!!!

Reason 732,845,923,845,371 that this country is broke! What next, “The National Department of Elves Are Good People Too”, Makes sense to me! After all, we need a government agency exclusively designed to ensure fairness by spreading some of Santa’s fame around. After all, if it was not for all those “little people” (elves), Santa would be nothing, and that’s not fair. I’m willing to contribute another 10% !!!

Posted by: Hoops | November 10, 2011, 10:06 am 10:06 am

it doesn’t say it is 15 cents per each tree purchased. it is for every tree grown and harvested. therefore the cost passed down to consumers would likely be more..maybe a couple of dollars increase in tree price at the retail level.

the main point is – that it is one more useless tax – where the money will be wasted on things that don’t need doing. what’s next? how about a billion dollar ad campaign for oxygen awareness? you know, to remind people to breathe and stuff.

This tax was originally proposed under the Bush administration. I don’t understand the need to make it a political issue.

A little over 60% of Americans believe in Christianity. Let’s look at the numbers.

307 million (current pop.) x .60 = 184 million people celebrating Christmas (at least)
Let’s consider that half buy real trees 184 million \ 2 = 92 million
92 million x .15 (15 cent tax)= 13.8 million dollars.

Don’t kid yourself money adds up.

This is the most stupid idea yet… but beware.. There is a lot more to come. Our way of life is under attack by wolves in sheep’s clothing. Wake up people or you will be paying a more fees/taxes on everything to fund the Government. The Government needs to be pulled back and tied up! Leave us alone!

I guess they realized that Christmas has nothing to do with the birth of Jesus, but is really a pagan holiday, and Christmas trees are pagan so they want to encourage it.

Posted by: Scott Texas | November 10, 2011, 10:38 am 10:38 am

NP, and others who mistake what this story is about, stop watching fixed news!
You are being played.
This ‘tax’ was a fee that the Christmas Tree Association requested. The Association is not part of the government, let’s get that straight, but a growers association. They wanted the tax levied to enforce everyone who is a big grower into contributing to an ad campaign because tree sales are down. Associations have done this in the past to make sure all their member contribute. The government collects the cash, takes a small retainer for expenses so us tax payers aren’t paying for this service, and hands over the balance to the Association so they can buy ad time.
That’s it. It is simply a business industry wanting to increase their sales with an ad campaign!
Don’t be duped by fixed news or the talking heads on radio and t.v. Google the facts, but make sure you are reading from an unbiased source so you will be truly educated, not bamboozled. Take it from a librarian, knowledge is power and lack of it can make you vulnerable to those with greedy agendas for themselves.

Posted by: Librarian53 | November 10, 2011, 11:00 am 11:00 am

Listen to those in opposition to Obama…He is wrong to collect a tax from the masses (mostly middle class Americans) that benefits business. Conclusion: middle class taxes shouldn’t benefit business, if the business wants the fund they should pay for it themselves. We could probably go so far as to say that business shouldn’t expect a tax break for the fund either. Hmmmmmm double-speak much?

Posted by: WI brain drain | November 10, 2011, 11:04 am 11:04 am

Don’t know what’s worse, the .15¢ tax proposed during the Bush Administration, or the Obama Administration caving in to misleading conservative diatribe. He needs to get more cojones. After all, based on the Republican presidential field, Obama is a shoe-in for a second term.

So Obama’s “Grinch” tax receives a lump of coal?

Posted by: Kaclrc | November 10, 2011, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

So if this is a fee by a private organization why is the US government involved in collecting it? If the xmas tree association wants that money from it’s members it needs to go get it. AND why is the Obama administration supporting live Christmas tree consumption?

This is about the non-greenest holiday tradition there is. The amount of wasted timber and that is thrown away is amazing. Some communities have mulching programs but not near enough to handle the yearly mess. Sorry i don’t get any of this.

Gag me. Anything from Drudge, from a former Cheney associate or from the right wing hatemongering Heritage Foundation is only going to be anti-reasonable and against Democrats in any and every way possible. Drudge and the Heritage Foundation along with Fox News just make up what they want to say and print. These people make me sick that there are people in America who believe all their hate-filled trash.

Posted by: Vicki | November 12, 2011, 1:08 am 1:08 am

Are any of you literate? It says the 15 tax was recommended by the Christmas Tree industry, not the Obama administration, and the tax will be paid by the growers, not the consumers. A way of allocating money for the industry to create a board to waste money on whatever they want to waste money on. They are saying they will eat the tax themselves and it will not show up in the final price of live Christmas Trees that few people even buy (most of you idiots by fake plastic trees). And good golly wolly, let’s say the evil Xmas Tree Growers of America lied, and will mark up the price of Xmas trees by a whole 15 CENTS…are you effing morons so poor that you can’t afford that? Stop buying McRib sandwiches and maybe you will have more pocket change to spare.

Posted by: Justin Lowe | November 13, 2011, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

Yes! How dare those greedy white-collared American tree farmers try to promote their industry! Don’t they understand the high price elasticity for Christmas trees such that a 15 cent tax would cause Americans to stop buying American grown trees! I’m all for boycotting them! Let’s go down to Walmart and buy an imported fake tree made in the far East! Our money leaving the country will teach those farmers how to be American!

Posted by: MN Tree Farmer | November 13, 2011, 4:27 pm 4:27 pm

The Obamas don’t say “Christmas Tree” they say holiday tree and they do not want any religious scenes in the WH this year! Remember, we are not a Christian nation.

Posted by: kingg711 | November 14, 2011, 4:45 pm 4:45 pm

Most of the posters on here need lessons in reading comprehension. This was not an Obama administration tax, It is a National Christmas Tree Association tax and it was going to be on the growers of Christmas trees not consumers.

Posted by: Barbra | December 2, 2011, 10:20 pm 10:20 pm

why would you want to tax a Christmas tree……..?

Obama please stop taxing Americans and then giving that money to people who don’t work at all… We work hard for our money……
