Take that $10,000 offer to the bank.

An analysis from our partners at Bluefin Labs shows that just under 40 minutes into the ABC News debate in Iowa, 3,400 messages on Twitter were prompted by Mitt Romney’s offer to bet with Rick Perry.

That’s a relatively high point an hour into the showdown in Iowa.

“You were for individual mandates, my friend,” Perry said to Romney, talking about President Obama’s health care program. Perry claims that Romney backed individual mandates in a book he wrote.

Romney responded, extending his hand: “You know what — you raised that before. … I tell you what. 10,000 bucks. $10,000 bet.”

“I’m not in the betting business,” Perry shot back.

The analysts also report that out of 43,000 messages on Twitter, Romney is the most popular subject, with 30 percent. The rest: Gingrich at 22 percent, Bachmann at 19 percent, Paul at 13 percent, Santorum at 10 percent, and Perry at 5 percent.

I think most Americans, myself included, do not begrudge another American the ability to make a wager. We are not envious of others, just because they have money. It is a failure of our media and of our current government to try to cause class warfare. Most of us, believe a person who manages his money well and then makes a wager in jest, is still an American. American’s believe in risk. That is what makes the American Dream a reality. The risk, courage and ability to accept risk and overcome it. Romney did fine and he would be a great President. President Eisenhower is who he reminds me of and his ability to put the country first in his thoughts and future actions.

The left wing press is deliberately avoiding the main issue, trying to put their own spin on the fact that Perry made a statement about Romney that was not true. Mitt was calling Rick on it. End of story.

Another thing – just because 30k+ people twitter about it, doesn’t mean the whole US in on the same page. You media outlets really know how to spin things your own way.

I loved it! Perry has been lying on Romney about that damned mandate for months. It’s about time Mitt told him to put up or shut up!!!

No mention of whether the comments/tweets were negative or positive. That makes the poll irrelevant without that data. Then who got tweeted about most show nothing.

I find Romney to personify what I’d like America to return to. A strong sense of family, morality, and a desire to work hard to insure a legacy of greatness for our posterity. Let’s sacrifice for them, like our founding fathers sacrificed for us.

Being a voting Republican past 40 years never have I seen any Presidential hopeful resort to a “WAGER” to prove his stance. This is just “Deplorable” Mr. Romney needs to learn that he isn’t with his coporate buddies were wagers are thrown at each other during a conversation.

Romney’s a Mormon, they don’t gamble. It was a joke people!!!

I personally the candidate who stood out in tonights debate was Ron Paul. I feel like he is consistent 100% of the time and we do not have to guess where he has to stand on any topic. Now Romney on the other hand, I do not trust him farther than i can throw him. I feel as though he will be another Obama if elected. Which is the LAST thing this country needs!!! And his tan (fake or not) looked awful on camera tonight.

The point isn’t whether or not Romney showed his affluence with such large wager……

The point is he reminded me of the 12 yr old version of myself on the defense,

“Wanna Bet”

Mitt sounded like a kid…..and this is not the 1st time he has looked adolescent when on the defensive

Romney was simply awesome in the debate! Obama will look pathetic against him or Gingrich. He needs the media to do again what it did in ’08…badly.

if by awesome you mean bratty….then ya

Way to go Governor Romney! Great job on stopping Rick Perry and his lies about your record. Newt was terrible at this debate tonite-the worst debate Newt has had so far. Romney was the clear winner but the ABC spin doctors (Newts new best friends) were the biggest losers along with Newt.

Actually, it’s pretty crass of Romney to even jokingly make a $10K bet when he’s up there saying he understands how Americans are suffering. Yeah. Sure you do. If you did you would realize that most Americans don’t have $10K to throw around on bets WILLARD.

I saw nothing tonight that convinces me that Romney or Gingrich can lead this nation. Gingrich is a self serving, narcissistic VIPER and Romney is a used car salesman (love that fake tan and the Grecian formula hair). Gingrich’s reign is when the Republican party went in the dumper.

Santorum and Bachmann are just flat out SCARY. I thought we were fighting AGAINST religious extremists!?!? Oh, nevermind…..

I listened to your pundits all lined up after the debate and was amused at their “SHOCK” that Romney offered a bet to Perry. Perry has been miss quoting Romney for months on TV and you guys haven’t done anything about it so Romney called his bluff on TV and Perry folded. It was a great move! Your first guy said “everyone is talking about the bet”. Sorry, if their talking about it that is good for Romney. What debate were you guys watching? Romney looked and sounded Presidential, while Newt sounded and looked like an old guy just glad to be there. You guys shouldn’t sound so obvious about your fear of Romney. It sounded like the same guy wrote all of your responses….Bad writer!

People bet all the time. I bet my brother a million dollars today…he backed out. So what?

When you know you are right, correct and telling the truth, it is a common way to call the bluff of the liar (in this case, Rick Perry)

Romney has the guts to challenge ..Perry is low to raise false claims again and again.. left wing media wants to see Romney OUT so Barack O’bama can stay for 4 more years!..

Romney had a very strong debate and closing argument . He is the strongest candidate against Obama and the left is very nervous about it.. Go Mitt !! Get our jobs back..turnaround US economy!

Love a dinosaur media article praising the internet when Ron Paul isn’t the leader.

Twitter is for folks who like to download viruses onto their hard drives.

The news is making more out of the wager than is was… everyone at one time has said I’ll bet you a million dollars. I think the Republicans want someone they can control and they feel Newt is the man.

I always thought that perry got owned in debate after debate by romney and he fell behind got panicky lost control and started making gaffes. NOW……perry took the parting shot !!

Posted by: kart | December 11, 2011, 10:11 am 10:11 am

The wager was inappropriate in the setting.

The real question…….is Romney has had this brought up n every debate, by Perry. Why isn’t he prepared to put it to rest, with actual quotes, from both book editions??????

That is the real question.

Was Perry telling the truth or lying about what Romney said in his book?

Posted by: Kenneth the VI of Minneapolis | December 11, 2011, 11:11 am 11:11 am

Please don’t try and change the subject here!

This is a simple situation in which two guys who now know each other pretty good, who just want to cut thru the BULL and prove who is ready to lead this country back to where it needs to go.

Romney is the MAN and it’s just so plain to see. I can’t understand how he is not the overwhelming choice for president at this point.

Is it just me?

Romney wager was a wink to Bob Beckel’s very recent $10k bet against him? How about Panetta’s $10k wine bet, or $10k SLPC Cohen bet? Oh, but they are libs.

Posted by: Flagkeeper | December 11, 2011, 10:32 pm 10:32 pm

When the left has to stretch THAT far to try to come up with something to criticize Romney about (oh my, he made a bet to shut up someone who has been making false claims for months!), you know they are in trouble.

Trust this, the record for Obama is VERY CLEAR about how abysmal his track record has been on a number of issues and when debate time comes around, he’s going to get demolished. Obama won’t be able to hide behind the spin of hte media left, he’ll have to actually face an opponent who will undoubtedly tear him up.

Can’t wait.

What about a president that has boasted that he will spend a BILLION dollars on his re-election campaign, when he actually has no creditable record on which to run.

Posted by: James | December 12, 2011, 10:13 am 10:13 am

Romney was only making the point that Perry was not telling the truth. Get over it!
