Huntsman to Drop Out of GOP Race; Will Endorse Romney

ABC News’ Michael Falcone reports:

Jon Huntsman will drop out of the Republican presidential race  on Monday, a campaign spokesman told ABC News.

A source close to the Huntsman campaign said the former ambassador to China and Utah governor was “proud of the race that he ran” but “did not want to stand in the way” of rival Mitt Romney, the current front-runner for the Republican nomination.

Huntsman plans to endorse Romney at an 11 a.m. press conference Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

After a disappointing third place finish in New Hampshire — a contest on which he had staked his candidacy — Huntsman vowed to fight on. In his concession speech in New Hampshire, he told his supporters:  “I say third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentleman! Hello, South Carolina!”

But just six days from the South Carolina primary, Huntsman has said goodbye to the Palmetto state after all.

A source close to the Huntsman campaign said that Romney is “not currently” planning to attend Huntsman’s Monday morning drop-out/endorsement announcement by the former Utah governor in South Carolina.

A Huntsman aide tells ABC News that the decision came in the wake of the results of the New Hampshire primary.

“He has been discussing with his family after they woke up after a successful evening in New Hampshire. They felt good about their performance in New Hampshire, but he and his family had a discussion and this is the decision they came to,” the aide said. “At the end of the day he decided he did not want to hurt the best chance of beating Barack Obama and that’s Mitt Romney. By continuing into South Carolina and Florida, that’s what he would have been doing.”

Word of Huntsman’s decision comes the same day that the biggest newspaper in South Carolina endorsed him.

The State newspaper of Columbia touted Huntsman’s resume, pointing to his record as governor of Utah, and his service as ambassador to both Bush and Obama.

“Mr. Huntsman is a true conservative, with a record and platform of bold economic reform straight out of the free-market bible, but he’s a realist, whose goal is likewise to get things done,” the paper wrote. “Under his leadership, Utah led the nation in job creation, and the Pew Center on the States ranked it the best-managed state in the nation.”

After attending church this morning with his wife Mary Kaye and daughter Gracie Mei, Huntsman said he was happy to have the endorsement.

“I think it’s a big deal anytime you get the largest paper in the state to come out and endorse you that’s a big deal,” he said. “I thought it was well written and well argued.”

In an interview with ABC News, South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Chad Connelly praised Huntsman for running a “spirited campaign” but acknowledged that his exit from the field “doesn’t change the dynamics of the race” in the Palmetto State.

While Huntsman will be throwing his support to Romney on Monday, it was only a week ago that he told ABC’s John Berman just the opposite.

When asked if he trusts Governor Romney, Huntsman replied, “He has not put forth reason to give us a reason for us to trust him.”

Earlier this month, he told another ABC reporter that Romney is “completely out of touch.”

Huntsman’s campaign had actually started several websites attacking Romney over the course of the campaign. Those sites – www.scaredmittless2012.com, for instance – no redirect to other sites like yahoo.com.

“We’ve removed lots of things from the website as most campaigns do when they are over,” a Huntsman campaign explained to ABC.

As recently as Saturday, Huntsman was questioning Romney’s electability.

Reporters asked Huntsman if any of the Republican establishment  had reached out to him and asked him to tone down his criticism of Romney and his work with Bain Capital. Huntsman explained: “Nope. And listen. I have said what I have said. My problem is really a political issue. And that is, when you have a candidate that talks about enjoyment in firing people, talks about pink-slips, who makes a comment that seem to be so detached from the problems that Americans are facing today, that makes you pretty much unelectable. And I say, we want a nominee who can actually go on to win. That’s the issue … the bigger issue is one of electability.”

Huntsman, 51, entered the race last summer to high expectations, but he struggled from the start to win over conservative Republican voters.

Huntsman is now the fourth Republican candidate to drop out of the campaign. Tim Pawlenty, the former governor Minnesota, dropped out last summer after a disappointing finish in the Iowa straw poll. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota dropped out just after the Iowa Caucus and businessman Herman Cain left the race in a storm of sexual harassment allegations.

With Huntsman’s endorsement of Romney on Monday as well as Pawlenty’s endorsement of Romney last summer, two of the four have thrown their support behind the former Massachusetts governor. The other two — Cain and Bachmann — have yet to endorse.

ABC’s John Berman, Jonathan Karl,  Shushannah Walshe, Elicia Dover, Susan Archer and Sara Just contributed to this report.

Mr Huntsman was right that Americans have a big issue with trust in politicians.

However, by endorsing Romney, he’s just ‘raising the debt ceiling’ on the “trust deficit”. There’s only one trustworthy candidate out there, only one that will do what he says and holds sound principles even in the face of enormous opposition from his peers in congress and from the corporate sponsored media. He also happens to be the only one who is not sponsored by large corporate donations. The only one who receives more donations from active duty military than all the other R candidates combined. Don’t blindly trust the TV pundits, get on the Internet and research these things for yourself and you will be awakened,

So Huntsman flips about Romney. Guess it takes a flip-flopper to know one.

This should be great news for Dr. Paul. I actually see more of Huntsman’s supporters falling back to Paul vs. Romney.

Posted by: Wowzers | January 15, 2012, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

Oh man, It bothers me who is the shot caller. Earlier, Tom Davis just endorsed Ron Paul and suddenly out of nowhere, he quit to endorse Romney. It seems like a diversion to me.

NAH NAH NAH NAH…HEY HEY HEY….GOOODBYEE!!! Huntsman dropped out of the race!! Another one bites the dust. Not like we didn’t know that already. Huntsman was doomed to the start. He was only in it to make sure Mitt Romney won NH. He did his part. Now he’s gone. Rick Perry will be next to go, followed by Newt and Santorum. The only one worth voting for is RON PAUL. If people can just stop believing everything FLIP-FLOPPING ROMNEY says and actually do the research on him and find out that he is EXACTLY LIKE OBAMA, then we would have no problem saving this country with RON PAUL in office.

Huntsman is out of the race and endorses Romney and worked with Obama. Imagine that. Both the most corrupt individuals of our time. Romney and Obama. Says alot about Huntsman, doesn’t it?

Vote Ron Paul 2012 Restore America NOW!!!

Posted by: NC | January 15, 2012, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

Huntsman is no fan of Romney so it is surprising that he would quit and back Romney at the same time. Hopefully President Obama and Democrats will take back the House and more in the Senate so that the government can continue to survive. People will be able to continue to get Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. It is the GOP and their love for the Ryan Plan that would have been enacted by the republicans. Democrats saved Medicare from being turned into a voucher program. They are the only party fighting for Social Security and Medicaid. The GOP is against increasing taxes on billionaires with the excuse that they are job creators. The truth is that they are not job creators. They are profiteers and greedy profiteers at that, just like Romney is a vulture capitalist.

I am considering many important issues concerning the upcoming primary election and how Newt Gingrich chose to run his personal relationships is not ranking high.

Good. He will do it because he understands the danger of flashy populism of Ron Paul. Get it, Ron Paul trolls?

Posted by: George | January 15, 2012, 10:46 pm 10:46 pm

Amb. Jon Huntsman is a wise man, indeed. He knows how to pick a winner! And, If, Rep. Ron Paul will draw support from Republicans, Democrats, and especially Independents, how come he’s lost in both Iowa & New Hampshire? Which state has he won so far? Which state will he win in the future Oh yeah, NONE! Furthermore, Sen. McCain was too OLD against Pres. Obama, and Ron Paul is too OLD against Pres. Obama. Ron Paul would be McCain all over again!
Vote for Gov. Romney, someone that CAN actually WIN!
Go, Mitt!

Posted by: Michael Veritas | January 15, 2012, 10:47 pm 10:47 pm

Ron Paul is endorsed by SC State Senator Tom Davis. Gee, no mention of that in the MSM news. Wonder why that is? Maybe because they are afraid of Ron Paul. TOO BAD!! RON PAUL GIVE US BACK OUR CONSTITUTION!! RESTORE AMERICA NOW!!!!

You ROMNEYBOTS are pathetic! Have you even done your research on Romney. He cares nothing for you or the people he hurts. He only cares about MONEY and POWER like Obama. Grow up, Sheeple!! He is Obama in Republican clothing. Vote for an honest candidate who has a clear track record of doing the right thing FOR THE PEOPLE and NOT FOR THE CORPORATIONS (Romney). Vote Ron Paul 2012!! Restore America NOW!!!

So let’s see. Romney buys a voter and now he buys a VP (Jon Huntsman). Can’t this guy just win things fair and square without buying his way for everything. It really shows how shallow and pathetic Romney is. And people actually want him to run the world. Pathetic. RON PAUL 2012!!

Some of my fellow Conservatives seem to have lost their minds. The primary isn’t just a forum to find the most conservative candidate we can. We need to chose someone that can actually beat Obama. If you want to just win a primary then find the most Conservative guy you can. If you actually want to win the Presidency then smarten up and pick someone that can actually pull in the moderate vote. Romney can do that and that’s why the media is so scared of him.

Posted by: Sil | January 15, 2012, 11:12 pm 11:12 pm

I am glad that Huntsman has decided to withdraw. And It is certainly no surprise that he would endorse fellow RINO and fellow Morman, Romney. So be it.

Now let’s hope that Santorum and Perry will see the light, withdraw, and endorse Newt. They are both good men, but neither possesses the rhetorical skills and nimbleness of thought that will be needed to move and inspire people during the campaign and to defeat Obama in the debates. Newt has these skills.

We must defeat Obama. And to do so, we must nominate the candidate who has the experience, intelligence, and ability to articulate conservative principles effectively. That man is Newt Gingrich.

Fellow Conservatives, please rally around Newt. This election may be our nation’s last chance to stop the madness.

By huntsman endorsing Romney, it proves which side of the constitution Romney is on. Huntsman’s view of government is by no means “limited” and his view on social security proves that he has no confidence in the private sector. Americans need to be reminded that it was the individual citizen that built this country, NOT government…

Posted by: Bill | January 15, 2012, 11:27 pm 11:27 pm

Huntsman”s a total phony. He said he wanted to withdraw from Afghanistan within a year, yet he endorses the candidate most likely to keep us in Afghanistan FOREVER. Huntsman says he is anti-torture, yet he endorses a candidate who supports torture. No problem, Huntsman was doomed after his weak third in New Hampshire. Now, the only candidate in the race that says he will end our idiocy in Afghanistan is Ron Paul and Ron Paul is in it for the duration.

Posted by: Robert Fallin | January 15, 2012, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm

Watcher, Romney is not a private sector candidate. Ask the 15,000 employees of Toys R Us who Romney and Bain capital put out of work to make themselves 120 million dollars if Romney supports the average worker. Dont be so blind…

1. “Huntsman, 51, entered the race to high expectations…” The only people with high expectations for Huntsman were in the liberal press.

2. Hey, Vicky, @ 13:37 pm, what in the world are you drinking? The government will survive regardless of which party wins. (It’ll survive if nothing else does.) As to Democrats being the only fighters for Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, Balderdash! Fighting for the survival of programs necessarily requires searching for ways to ensure future funding for them to prevent their disastrous collapse when Democratic Party promises prove to be hooey, as they will.

This bickering back and forth between republicans is exactly why the mainstream media is laughing at us and all of our candidates. We need to stick together and back whoever the R nominee is so that we can take our country back and turn it around to what our forefathers intended.

In fact, Romney’s great grandfather, Miles Park Romney, led that first expedition to escape not persecution but prosecution for polygamy, or what Mormons called ‘plural marriage.’ After polygamy ended, the family remained in Mexico. Mitt Romney’s father, George, was born in Colonia Dublan, one of the colonies in northern Mexico that the Romneys settled in after their arrival. His mother, Lenore LaFount Romney, was born in Utah.

Is Romney even elegible???????????????????

“We need to stick together and back whoever the R nominee is so that we can take our country back and turn it around to what our forefathers intended.”—————That didn’t work so well with the last (R) president ( Homeland Security / Patriot Act ) , so what makes you think going back to doing the same stupid thing , i.e voting for republicans / conservatives , will change anything ? You right wingers are so stupidly dense it’s pathetic . Just don’t vote , please. Blame yourself for voting over and over for R) dingbats like Bush/ Cheney and quit shirking the blame for YOUR stupid voting history by childishly blaming the over-worked and under-appreciated (D) clean-up crew . Conservatives are killing America , pure and simple . Their ideological games have put the country in the hole , time after time since Nixon . They always leave a train wreck when they leave office, every time , no exceptions . Then they blame it on anyone but the real culprit , themselves. We need to ban the conservative party until they can run a political system without resorting to half-truths and flat out bold-faced lies , which is standard operating procedure right now for any conservative I have seen opening their mouth over the last 2 or 3 years . Ph.D s in B/S .

What is Ron Paul, chopped liver? If this was a horse race the announcer would be reminding us of who is in the race and how well the horses are doing. Ron Paul is demonstrating a substantial voter concern and how far we have strayed from the Constitution. What was Jon Huntsman’s outstanding position? What have we lost when he leaves the race? This should be a race about issues, so what are the primary issues the candidates are championing? And if a few people prefer Ron Paul, isn’t that still a lot more than preferred Jon Huntsman? Are the American people truly represented or are they just being carried along to make the process look legitimate?

Most people could see that Huntsman wasn’t serious. Now it is confirmed. He was just supporting his fellow Mormon. Seems that the Mormons want to get into the top office like crazy and are assured that Mitt TheGlove will be placed in the Oval Office by the controllers who will abandon Obama. O will withdraw from the race, will be shipped back to Chicago to be Mayor, and Rahm will return to DC to support Mitt. They already have shipped Daley back to Chicago and he will be Obama’s helper. The controllers got a lot from O that they wanted done and now are afraid of continued law suits to get O’s papers which will prove he does not fit the legal requirements to be president. Makes a lot of sense. The Controllers have directed the media to support Mitt and that’s what they are doing, just like they obeyed the Controllers and supported Obama when he was a candidate. We need to research and uncover the names of O’s controllers.

Of course a Mormon is going to endorse another Mormon. They want publicity and fame so they can say “hey look at us – we’re God’s chosen people.”
If Romney gets the nomination, the GOP is TOAST. The left attack machine is going to make mince meat of Romney by bringing up the racist quotes from Brigham Young about blacks and stunted intelligence and flat noses being a sign of a cruse, etc. etc. They are going eat him alive.
He better not get the GOP nomination or our country is DOOMED.

Huntsman seemed to be the voice of sanity, decency, and intelligence; but now that he is backing Romney, he has ceased to be for me the symbol of hope that all might not be lost in this election. Perhaps Mr. Huntsman is not all that he seemed to be: the one viable choice among clowns and mental cases.

Ron Paul is my first choice. If Gingrich gets the nomination I’ll reluctantly vote for him. There isn’t enough difference between Romney and Obama to bother voting. Religious fanatics scare me so I won’t vote for Santorum. I won’t be responsible for that.
I may be looking for a third party this time. Either that or stay home, clean my guns and pray.

Do you support the patriot act and what it has done to your liberties? Do you support the recently signed NDAA bill signed under the distraction of new years eve NOT reported by the major media…. THE SAME MAJOR MEDIA SUPPORTING ROMNEY… I don’t agree with everything Ron Paul says but you cannot argue he’s the only one supporting your freedom to do what you want right now. REMEMBER all of these candidates said they completely support the patriot act and need to strengthen it!! JUST THINK ABOUT IT FRIENDS!

huntsman was angry all the time very much like newt and santorum angry people like these should not run for president and if they do they should not receive support. mitt too runs angry all the time although he masks his anger with that big hypocritical smile. angry men should not be elected president. only perry and paul have the equanimity to become and be presidents of our country. … if mitt is nominated once he beats obama then he will turn around and beat all of us into submission to his dictatorial rules. i recommend to vote for ron paul.

No Milquetoast moderate; no wacky libertarian conspiracy theorist. We need a conservative to lead this country. Gingrich/Santorum or Santorum/Gingrich. It’s time to leave the moderates where they belong: In the middle of the road – preferably in the path of a speeding semi!

Just goes to show how phoney all these guys are. Today, one will say this guy is steals from old ladies and is a pervert, the next day he’ll endorse him and say he loves old ladies and children. Mitt Romney is the worst of the lot, all he knows is how to gut companies and make people unemployed. Just what America needs, a vulture. Watch him sell Social Security and Medicare to his pals, privatizing it and watch how Wall Street like drunks will gamble your money and benefits away. You think Social Security doesn’t have enough money coming in now, wait till they get their greedy hands on it. If you don’t think so, you must have forgotten what Wall Street and the banks did to people’s IRA…they went from 401Ks to 101Ks. And don’t plan on retiring anytime soon, they will raise the retirement age to 70 which means many will die before seeing a penny. This is the real Romney.

Huntsman is a sellout because he endorsed Romney.

Ron Paul is gaining support, but there are still people who oppose his ideas of freedom.
Some people are content to be slaves, to be ignorant of their true position in life. Being a serf is easy, just go along with what your master tells you. The anti-Ron Paul comments come from people who are ambivalent to their status as tax slaves, cannon fodder, a voting robot who votes for the candidates that the Establishment decides to put on the ballot for them. This is a great explanation for the anti-Ron Paul people: Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. “Plato lets Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato’s Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall do not make up reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.”
So many Americans have been fed lies their whole lives, and when someone tells them the truth they rebel against it, just like they rebel against Ron Paul.

You have to wonder….. It sounds as if behind the curtains he got his warning to drop out and endorse Romney. Who comes our ready to compete then three days later quota dead in their tracks. Is this the globalists stepping in to boost their candidate Romney?

Huntsman was the best chance the Republican Party had to unseat Obama. He is experienced, intelligent, and appeals to the Moderates and Independents that actually decide our presidential elections. Obama is smiling right now…………

Posted by: A Cynic | January 16, 2012, 8:47 am 8:47 am

well if you needed a sign to prove the end of the world is coming , this election should prove it. Their is not one person out there on ether party that can be trusted with one penny let alone the country and the world. All we get every election is the same bottom feeders in both parties, which their goal is the same total control communism and all the money for them and their friends, they both use the weak and the stupid to get there agenda passed. The democrats say the rich are making you poor , and the republicans pass off some old hack , and say we need to pick the lesser of two evils…well I say evil is evil. screw them none of the above. both parties have ignored the constitution, which is the rule book that they have to follow, whille taking away all our freedom and money and giving it to our enemies and peo;le tha will vote for them and dont do any thing to try to work or support themselves.. screw romney and obama and anyone that suppoerts them you are all spineless idiots. if these are the choices you are happy with good luck with the end of the world(it might not end , but it sure wont be worth living in with these corrupt jerk offs running it

Unless you are a woman currently living in Texas. Texas just enacted a new law that requires every person seeking an abortion to undergo a medically unnecessary ultrasound first. Regardless of the person involved, her personal circumstances, or the doctors wishes. The government there has inserted itself, almost literally, into the uteruses of all women seeking an abortion. Again, completely medically unnecessary, regardless of the persons or the doctors opinion, it must now be done. Doctors face punishment if they do NOT do it. When asked about this insanely intrusive, medically unnecessary, COSTLY new requirement, Ron Paul said just the other day, “They should have done this a long time ago”. Mr. ‘Small Government, Get Government out of our Lives’ Paul supports this draconian intrusion into a woman’s privates. He’s a monumental hypocrite with his stance here.

For some strange reason, after all this time of viewing your post, I have always thought you were an adult that “stopped believing in Santa Claus”.

You do know that the “(R)” beside Paul’s name is what is preventing him from becoming President…. the powers-that-be in the Republican party won’t allow Paul to be their nominee. (PERIOD!), that’s just a fact of life some are going to have to grow up and accept.

This is Paul’s third try at the White House. “The third time’s the charm” is not a phrase that applies here… hehehehehe!

All you Ron Paul sheep…for a man who constantly professes to be small government, no waste, and keeping govt out of your lives, he sure loves to take every advantage of his little perks…Recent story just came out saying Paul from 2009 – present has traveled First class on over 20 round trip flights from DC to Texas. He also has over 40 one way First class tickets…all bought using tax payer money!!! He supports the govt in TX saying the women wanting an abortion MUST undergo needless ultrasounds before getting an abortion. RON PAUL IS A HYPOCRATE!!!! I’d rather vote for a candidate who admits changing his policies than one that doesn’t practice what they preach. The hand writing is on the wall you trolls…Paul is DONE!! Just go back to TX and sit on your front and be racist there Ronnie boy!

Now Newt (sleazy corporate lobbyist) and Perry (Texas-style crony capitalist) need to drop out so Ron Paul and Romney can debate limited vs. expansive government.

I’m also dropping out of the race for president. I’m going to put my two votes that I had during my campaign (mine and my moms) and support Mr. Romney as well. Just like Huntsman.

Posted by: Mr. Insignificant | January 16, 2012, 10:36 am 10:36 am

Huntsman never had a shot but to endorse Romney is just a joke. Guess he’s hoping for a position in his administration. Who knows. I wouldn’t support either one as there is no major difference between them and Oboma or Bush. Honestly, I am just tired of the same politicians and that is why I am voting for Ron Paul. I’ve made a committment, like many others, either Ron Paul or no one.

Do you hear that GOP and neocons? Either it’s Paul or we do not vote this November. We’ve had enough of the liberals and enough of the big spending RINOs like Romney.

Huntsman endorses Obamney. How quaint.

Pick your heads up and think with your brain if at all possible. A vote for anyone other than Dr. Ron Paul is a vote for runaway dishonesty. Most of you here appear to be like Neo before he was popped out of “The Matrix”. This is not your fault. You have no idea concerning the sophisticated level of control your keepers spoon feed you daily. Your kneejerk response will be to mock and ridicule. This is understandable. This is how professional serial dishonesty works. It runs so thick you no longer see the forest through the trees. I’m thinking other than the professional liars who are basically all the other candidates including our sitting travesty, you simply can no longer see the forest through the trees. Read “The Prince” by Machiavelli. It is a bite sized little book that teaches serial dishonesty. Your keepers sure have, and then some. Do yourself justice. If not, don’t say the Captain didn’t warn you. I am perturbed that so many are willing to compromise. For what I ask? More of the same? Are you all teenagers? First time voters? If so my apologies. If not, shame on you.

You’re right about that. Probably needs something else to round out his resume.

Anybody who drops out without waiting for the election results doesn’t have his heart in it.
In my opinion, there are only two candidates who want it bad enough and one of them is a game-show-host phony.

Obviously those terms describe people on both sides of the aisle. A Conservative on TV the other day made an interesting observation: Mitt Romney has five healthy adult sons. Here we are, ten years into the Afghanistan War, and not one of his progeny volunteered for military service.

We remember a few years back, stunned to see Iowa farmers sobbing as they stood outdoors watching Auctioneers sell off the family farms, farms in the same family for generations. Many prayers were said for them to be strong, regain their lives and buy back farms whenever possible. We have just see the same Iowans vote for a man who rejects Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Saviour. So, Iowa, you go ahead and pray to Mr. Smith when you get in trouble again, and you certainly will. What audacity it would be for you to pray to God for any help, asking in the name of Jesus Christ, as Christians. You have made your choice. You could have voted for a Christian man who as an OBGYN delivered 4000 babies into the USA, is an Air Force Veteran, faithful husband, good parent and grandparent, reliable congressman, lover of America and Americans. Don’t talk about your respect for life, your love of our troops, your desire to have honest politicians. You kicked the best one out of Iowa in favor of a corporate greedy liar who does not respect life, never been in our military and would use our troops for political purposes, has a Stepford wife and family culture, and is against Christ in favor of a goofy cult leader. New Hampsire earned the same reaction from Christians but they have never stood for much since the revolution except money. South Carolina might be more American and kick the Mormons out. We ARE a Christian nation, angry with the illegal and pals in government, and will have our country and freedom back.

So…..what? As I said, a Conservative on TV made that observation. What do YOU think it means? The person mentioned that Jon Huntsman – and even Joe Biden – have kids in the military right now. And that Paul served when he was drafted. In fact, this is what Ron Paul said about Romney in the January 7th debate: “Yeah. I think people who don’t serve when they could and they get three or four or even five deferments aren’t — they — they have no right to send our kids off to war, and not be even against the wars that we have. I’m trying to stop the wars, but at least, you know, I went when they called me up.” So Paul is saying that Romney is a chickenhawk.

Ron Paul for president. He’s NOT part of the 1%.

Posted by: Dave7777 | January 16, 2012, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm

It is certainly heartening for this progressive Independent Obama supporter to witness the division on the Right…

And, of course, the sub-par nature of the field of GOP candidates (of whom ROMNEY is the only even potentially electable one, and he has serious problems including his political and business record AND the fact that he has already been rejected as a “RINO” and “liberal” by many on the far right).

Gingrich is the ultimate Washington insider, a corporate lobbyist by any other name, accumulated 84 ethics violation charges during his time in office, and was essentially forced to resign by his OWN party, he was such a liability. We don’t even have to go into his PERSONAL life/affairs.

Paul is a radical Libertarian who lacks the support of a significant percentage of the GOP base (who are Republicans, not Libertarians, after all) for his positions on defense, Israel, and, believe it or not, the dismantling of most of the federal government (despite the impression one might get from listening to the Tea Partiers and far right extremists, a solid majority of Republicans still believe in the Constitution and its creation of a federal government and its empowerment of it to levy taxes, regulate interstate commerce, and promote the general welfare…they are not radicals who want to eliminate the IRS, the Dept. of Education, EPA, FDA, Social Security, etc.).

None of the others even bear mentioning.

Romney (or whoever..but it WILL be Romney) will be running against an incumbent President whose overall approval ratings have, to date, rivaled or beaten those of Reagan in HIS first term,

who has overseen the creation of 3 million private sector jobs (of the 8.75 million we lost under Bush and in his administration’s immediate wake), and almost 2 YEARS now of consecutive monthly PS job growth,

likewise overseen the apprehension of bin Laden and roughly 40 other terrorist king-pins, the overthrow of Mubarak and Gaddafi, & the END of the war in Iraq.

Oh, and all that TARP money Bush signed into law? All PAID BACK with INTEREST under Obama (who attached strings to it and they couldn’t pay it back fast enough).

You’re welcome.

Bottom line, you guys are going to have a tough fight under the BEST of circumstances, and an IMPOSSIBLE one with a weak candidate and a split electorate.

A CYNIC So Paul is saying that Romney is a chickenhawk.\\\\\\\\\ Obama has never served either. Posted by: jackie | January 16, 2012, 12:29 pm.

No he has not. Ron Paul was drafted, and he went when called. Romney avoided the draft with deferments, just like Dick Cheney and Bill Clinton. When Obama turned 18, there was no draft, and we were not at war with anyone. At that point in time, the military was just another career choice. But now, we have been at war for 10 years. Romney has five able bodied young men in his family. Their dad was a politician, and he’s been seeking the office of president since 2007. Yet none of them volunteered to serve and fight in the wars. The reason Paul said Romney is a chickenhawk is clear – he advocates a tough military intervention stance but has never actually served himself. That is what a chickenhawk is. The reason that Conservative commentator brought up Romney’s five civilian sons is also clear. What is NOT clear is why YOU brought Obama into this discussion. Attempt at deflection, maybe?

Posted by: A Cynic | January 16, 2012, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

A CYNIC: “Romney avoided the draft with deferments, just like Dick Cheney and Bill Clinton..”

Just a clarification/elaboration, if I may; Cheney is on record as saying he “had more important things to do” during VietNam (than serve in a war he supported and urged others to fight).

Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and so exempt from service in the war he openly OPPOSED.

While technically accurate (both avoided service on deferments of one sort or another), I don’t think it’s proper to lump the two in together given their differing positions on the war.

Cheney comes across as an arrogant, entitled hypocrite. While Clinton may come across as arrogant and entilted, at least he wasn’t a hypocrite about it.
