Jon Huntsman’s New Hampshire Rise: ‘We Are Ready to Rock and Roll!’
EXETER, NH — On the eve of the New Hampshire primary Jon Huntsman took to a platform surrounded by over 300 supporters, and wearing a United States Navy leather jacket, the GOP contender rounded off 170 public events at the very site where he first kicked off his presidential efforts last June.
A rarely hyped up and excited Huntsman called out to his supporters, “Are we ready to rock and roll tomorrow?! We are ready to rock and roll!” Tuesday night’s rally offered spectators a different side of the governor and former ambassador. Over the last two days, it’s as if the world remembered that he was running, with an ever-increasing media swarm and huge turnouts to his events. The campaign calls it ‘Hunts-mentum’.
Up until the New Year, Huntsman’s campaign stops took on a rather understated tone compared to that of other presidential hopefuls. Mostly town halls, Huntsman usually gives a 30-45 minute speech discussing what he calls the nation’s deficits — the economic deficit and the deficit of trust. He then entertains comments and questions from the audience, giving very in-depth and often lengthy answers to questions on everything from foreign policy to jobs to health care. Fireworks, if any come from attendees wanting to know how the governor matches up against the other candidates.
Huntsman made it clear on a daily basis that he’s not into the theatrics of politics, often saying that he won’t contort himself into a pretzel or light his hair on fire. Huntsman was convinced that it would be his message and ideas that would propel him forward. But one had to wonder how a mild-mannered politician could break through a political race branded by big personalities. Well if the last two days are any indication, Huntsman’s managed to do it with tons of hand-shaking and repetition of message.
Early on, ABC News asked him if he had the personality to make his mark in New Hampshire.
“Well we did just great as governor of a state reelected with 78 percent of the vote. People saw us for who we are, as a leader.” Huntsman said. “Once people get to know you better and understand your style and your approach to getting things done, I think they’ll like it. I have no doubt about that.”
Tonight in Exeter, Mary Kaye introduced her husband, telling the story of a wooden egg, her “secret, lucky charm” that Jon Huntsman gave her at a ‘politics and eggs’ breakfast at Saint Anslem’s College. Written all over the egg: ‘I love you’. She’s been carrying it around New Hampshire since they started campaigning in the Granite State.
Arguably, Mary Kaye has been the hardest working wife on the trail, stumping for her husband at nearly every town hall. Introducing him to voters as the ‘fantasy candidate’ and the hidden secret in this race that people who may not have been attracted to him at first, are now taking a second look.
“We’ve outworked everybody,” Huntsman told the crowd in Exeter. “And you know what? To the people of this state, they don’t want to be told for whom to vote and they sure don’t want the establishment teeing up the same old people. They want a new generation of leadership. A new generation of energetic leadership that’s going to get the job done.”
Huntsman has continually said that it will be market expectations set by the media that will determine what a successful outcome in New Hampshire is. But Huntsman himself has played a role in carving what the market expectations are – branding himself as ‘the underdog’ in the race. Having poured all his resources — time and money — into the state, if he fails to place reasonably in tomorrow’s first in the nation primary, it could mean the end to what, up until the last two weeks, has been an uneventful and relatively timid campaign.
Attending his events, there is no doubt that he has support. As Mary Kaye often reminds people, supporters from across the aisle always refer to him as the Republican they could vote for. And she’s not lying. At an event in Meredith, NH back in December, a supporter said, “You are the most sane Republican that I have seen!” to which the room responded with cheers and applause. Last night in Keene, a young woman who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 spoke of her dissatisfaction with the current administration and promised that if he made it to the general election, Huntsman would have her vote.
And this is what Huntsman hopes will help push him forward: electability, and billing himself as the only candidate in the GOP field who can beat Barack Obama.
Kicking off his ‘Restoring Trust’ tour in Pelham, NH, Huntsman said, “Here’s the rap on me. They all say, ‘gee that Huntsman guy, he can win the general election’ and I believe that to be the case. I can win the general election. But can he get through the primary phase?”
Huntsman told those gathered, “We’re gonna prove that point right here in New Hampshire.”
If Huntsman finishes second or even third it will prove to be the market moving event he’s been waiting for, and ‘Hunts-mentum’ could prove to be real. But even a successful finish won’t mean smooth sailing for the candidate. To date, Huntsman has failed to qualify for the ballot in three states: Virginia, Illinois and Arizona.
Following Sunday’s NBC debate where Huntsman addressed Romney’s attack on him for serving as ambassador to China under Obama, Huntsman has taken his “country first” response, and along with “restoring trust,” has made that the driving messages of his campaign.
Tonight he gave the responsibility to New Hampshire voters.
“I don’t know about you, but we’ve gone from one end of this state to the other and every stop along the way, I hear the same thing: ‘something is happening out there. Something is happening!’ I have no idea what it is going to be tomorrow night but I do know this — we’re going to surprise a whole lot of people in this country.”
On Tuesday we’ll know whether or not his message will translate into real votes. Huntsman has definitely showed that he is willing to shake every hand and answer more questions than any of his fellow contenders.
“As you’re working tomorrow I want you to remember that word trust,” said Huntsman. “Because if there was one word that summarized everything that we’re trying to do, everything is trust. That’s what this movement is about. That’s what this campaign is all about. And I believe that trust word is going to take us all the way to the finish line tomorrow night.”

I live in NH and I plan to vote for Huntsman because he wants term limits in Congress. Period.

I am in Ohio and having been following John Huntsman since he started running. Without a doubt he has what it takes to be my president. I also like to hear him talk about term limits and believe he tells it like it is. Intelligence, even keeled, likable, knowledgeable on the issues and experience running a budget as governor, lastly he CAN beat Obama. Come on Hew Hampshire, give him a chance!

I’m a Utah Democrat and we are marginalized, hated, perceived and attacked as nothing but abortion-getting nutcakes who want to take all the guns away. Hardly the truth, but if you’re not mormon republican in Utah that’s what you are.
Jon Huntsman is the only republican I’ve ever voted for and I did it twice. If that’s a negative with the ultra right-wing that thinks it runs this country, that’s EXACT:LY what’s wrong with this country.
We used to shop at the same grocery store when he was governor. Yes, he shopped. And despite coming from one of the wealthiest families int he country I have personally witnessed Jon huntsman, kids in tow, checking cereal prices. Want a president who is in touch with the country? It’s this guy.

Too bad the president has absolutely no control over term limits. None at all. They can only be instituted through a Constitutional amendment. I like the fact that Huntsman supports them, but it’s a rather hollow support, since he cannot do anything about them one way or the other.
Personally I think Huntsman is the only legitimate alternative to Obama. The other goofs on the Right are way, way too far Right for mainstream America. Huntsman is the closest thing to a Moderate they have. Which is, of course, why he will fail to secure the nomination. The Republican Tea Party wants nothing to do with moderation. Or intelligence and experience, for that matter.

A rise in NH may not be much help. Huntsman did not make it onto the Arizona ballot as reported yesterday. In addition, he is not on the ballots in Illinois or Virginia. It’s mathematically almost impossible for him to be nominated. A protest vote for him would be a bit too vague. Perhaps another anti-Romney would be a better place to cast your vote.

Huntsman will NOT be the nominee. He can’t even get on a few state ballots. He can’t compete anywhere but NH and maybe one or two other states way down the line. It’s over for him after today. The race is between Romney and the anti-Romney Ron Paul.
Secondly, Huntsman is pro patriot act, NDAA, war with Iran etc etc etc. He is not a person an independent would agree with if they knew all of his positions.

What’s up with all the candidates who can’t get on the ballot in all the states? Gingrich, Huntsman, Santorum. Maybe at the next debate they should ask some simple questions like “hey, are you smart enough to fill out some paperwork and get some signatures?”

Make no mistake. This is ABC. Anytime they promote or write a glowing article about a Republican, you can bet they are being disingenuous and want to play game wrecker in the primary. They love Obama.

I have never understood why Jon Huntsman did not get more notice. He is definitely one of the more “normal” sounding candidates. I also am also a staunch democrat (have never voted Republican in fact). But I too am disillusioned with Obamas ability to get things done, even though I believe much of it has been beyond his control. If Huntsman made it through the pack, I think I would actually go to the “dark side” and vote for him. I especially love the fact that he has run without leaning on his family money (that will have to stop though) and that he wouldn’t agree to take the “no new taxes” pledge when all the other candidates went through that charade. Anyway, I think he is going to come in a surprise second in NH. All three of the voting members in my family (all former democrats) just voted for him and he is getting lots of buzz.

There’s a big difference being a Governor of a 3 million population, lily white and Mormon controlled state and managing a state whose legislature is the other party. No governor is going to get anywhere in Utah without the tacit approval of “The Church”. It’s one thing to get fellow Mormons voting for your legislation than actually working across the aisle and getting something done with a democratic legislator. Romney has down that. Huntsman has no experience outside of his state to manage politics outside his experience. We’re seeing what that will do for you, by taking a look at Obama. Governor or no, Huntsman is a distraction. He should effectively be done by this evening.

Sorry Susan,
Jon Huntsman has been largely financed by his father. He is getting family money to run his campaign. I would suspect that daddy’s contributions will end tonight.

Your post is confusing. You believe the young people of this country are fully supporting the oldest guy in the pack? Odd. Ron Paul is trying to get the REPUBLICAN nomination for the chance to run against Obama. He will not get it. His Party will see to that. They don’t like him very much. Regardless of what you believe the young people will or will not do. Paul will never be our president. He ran as a Libertarian in 1988 and got less than 500,000 votes across the country. He ran for the Republican nomination in 2008 and did not even come close to getting it. It will take a lot more than the young people to get Paul into the White House. It will take a miracle.

Huntsman believes the New World Order is a conspiracy theory and that Hamas was not created by Israel and that that was a conspiracy theory too. Let’s see, GHW Bush and Newt admitted to the New World Order and most senior officials in the military as well as politicians stated that Hamas was indeed created by Israel. Do the research, “Hamas created by Israel”. You will find at least ten links. So who is sane now?
He plots his presidential campaign against Obama while serving as Obama’s man in Beijing.
He is also endorsed by Henry Kissinger, which should setoff many alarm bells NOT to vote for him.
Huntsman is about as conservative as Karl Marx. He’s a vehement climate change believer, a firm ally of Harry Reid, has strongly opposed the Tea Party movement and to top it all off, he’s a former Obama administration official. He is described as “Barack Obama’s secret weapon” by some conservatives and is likely to drop out of the GOP race, run as an Independent and take enough votes away from whoever turns out to be the Republican candidate in order to ensure
Obama’s re-election.He even failed to get on the VA, IL and AZ ballots, making him as unelectable as Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum.
Huntsman is going to be used by the MSM, the same way they used Rick Santorum in Iowa. They need someone to derail Ron Paul from first or second place so he doesn’t get near Romney. It’s that simple. Next election in South Carolina, it will be Rick Perry and then Newt again in Florida.
DON’T let the MSM win. DON’T let them choose the candidate for you. Choose the people’s champion. VOTE RON PAUL 2012!! Restore America NOW!!!

Ron Paul polls WAY better against Obama than Huntsman. In fact in the RCP average Ron Paul polls second best against Obama of any GOP, and Romney is the only one who comes in ahead of him. Yesterday’s CBS poll had Paul and Romney both statistically tied with Obama head to head, today’s Ipsos poll again has Paul polling second after Romney in head to head races against Obama.

I’ll say this about Huntsman. He was far more successful a governor than Mitt Romney was. Romney made his state rank 47th in job creation and was so unpopular that he declined to run for a second term and the voters replaced him with a Democrat.
