Top GOP Senator Says ‘If Romney Loses Michigan, We Need a New Candidate’

A prominent Republican senator just told me that if Romney can’t win in Michigan, the Republican Party needs to go back to the drawing board and convince somebody new to get into the race.
“If Romney cannot win Michigan, we need a new candidate,” said the senator, who has not endorsed anyone and requested anonymity.
The senator believes Romney will ultimately win in Michigan but says he will publicly call for the party to find a new candidate if he does not.
“We’d get killed,” the senator said if Romney manages to win the nomination after he failed to win the state in which he grew up.
“He’d be too damaged,” he said. “If he can’t even win in Michigan, where his family is from, where he grew up.”
What about Rick Santorum?
“He’d lose 35 states,” the senator said, predicting the same fate for Newt Gingrich.
It would have to be somebody else, the senator said. Who?
“Jeb Bush,” the former Florida governor.

The republicans need a whole new field of candidates. These men thought that because the economy was so bad that all they had to do was call the President name and it would be easy.
They forgot they need to have some kind of plan to improve the economy. Instead they’re all hung up on contraception and such.
Jeb Bush, Colin Powell, Fred Thompson, Alan Simpson would be credible candidates if they decide they wanted to replace these buffoons.

The Bush name is damaged goods in this country. No way would Jeb win, even though by all accounts he’s the much more intelligent of the two (the other, of course, being GW.) But there is no way this country will elect someone with that last name after the LAST guy with that last name stomped this country flat like Godzilla going through Tokyo.

CYNIC
I admit George Bush was not a very good President but we need to give both President Obama and President Bush credit for the bailout idea. They collaborated on it even before President Obama was inaugurated. Maybe Bush did it in desperation but it was a good idea.

Thoughtful Americans don’t hold the Firefighter responsible for water spell while fighting the fire set by an arsonist, no matter how much the arsonist, turns around to accuse, the firefighter of wasting water to fight the fire he set. Republicans doomed the economy and refused to help resurrect it. why put them back in charge with the same trickle down nonsense? Americans are smarter than that!

OMG!! Another Bush???? Did the last Bush not destroy the economy of this country, and we have been trying to repair it ever since?? Did the Bushes not lead us into a FEW wars – unwarranted, and costing us taxpayers gazillions??? What is wrong with the repubs that they would want to send another “terminator” to the WH?? Do they really want to continue this decline so that even Angola will be better off than the US? For the sake of generations, please not another Bush.

I think George Bush’s problem was Carl Rove and Dick Cheney. From what I understand Jeb was a pretty good governor of Florida and he wouldn’t have Chaney or Rove to deal with.
Being a staunch democrat I’d never vote for him but I think he’d be more credible than any of the current republican candidates.
Colin Powell is a reasonable man, but he would never get past the right wing conservatives

YIKES!!! Talk about STRONG words!!! But here’s my problem with the Senator… whatever happened to the; “Anybody can beat Obama” mantra? I guess its not so true since there is now a major concern regarding Romney. Then… what’s up with this horse race mentality? Our government and elections should not be carried out as if they were simply some type of sporting match! The goal should not be to “beat” Obama but to be a better leader than Obama.

What makes you think that? You hate ALL Republican because they’re Republicans, You also said they were guaranteed to lose power for the next 50 years.
If gas prices keep going up, you’ll be off by 50 years. IT will make no difference WHICH candidate wins the nomination.

How about a constitutional amendment that states “no more than two members of the same family lineage, either blood or law shall be president of the united states”. This I would think is very much in the line with the founders view against monarchies. I could see how a powerful family could make a run at the oval office for several generations.

Ron Paul is the answer. He is the one who can get votes across the spectrum in the general election. He stands the best chance against Obama. Young people love him too. Anyone nominated other than Ron Paul will get destroyed by Obama.

No woman in her right mind would vote for Santorum as president of this country. Not with his outrageous comments past and present expression his desire to oppress women in some form or another (he sees it as “a moral uplift”…everyone with a working brain cell sees it as OPPRESSION).
Oops. Correction. No man OR woman in his OR her right mind would vote for Santorum as president of this country. Not after Santorum emphatically stated his belief that American adults are NOT entitled to any privacy at all, not even in their own homes. Yep, he said it, look it up. Can you imagine that ginormous can of worms that would open for this country with this thinking? You think Obama “overreaches”? At least Obama does not reach into OUR BEDROOMS and our BODY orifices to mandate his sicko brand morality on Americans, like Santorum has virtually said HE would do.
Send Santorum back to the 14th century where he belongs.

The Republicans know they’re going to lose. The only question now is how badly and will they lose the House too. How am I sure of this? The minute they went back to this “culture war” birth control crap rather than issues people care about, it was obvious that they’re just trying to keep the Teabaggers at full boil so they can limit the damage.
Posted by: Jimmy Jazz | February 17, 2012, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm
The GOP is reaping the whirlwind they sowed by relying so heavily on the extreme right wing for votes. They are now in a position where any candidate who is has pure enough ideology to be acceptable to the Tea Party, Evangelicals, and Pro-lifers (and hence who can get enough support to win the nomination), is far too extreme to get enough independent and conservative Democrat votes beat Obama.
Im conservative enough to consider Ron Paul a good candidate, but I wouldnt vote for the three blind mice at the top of the polls. Unfortunately, too many voters on both sides are too concerned with meaningless issues like abortion, gay marriage and prayer in school for us to have an election based on the issues that really affect this nation.
Posted by: Red Smith | February 17, 2012, 5:08 pm 5:08 pm
LOL! ….. Jon Huntsman was the most “middle-of-the-road” candidate that the Republicans had, who would have attracted A LOT of independent voters, and Republicans didn’t recognize it.
Now, they’re stuck with 2 “extreme” ideological right-wing candidates (Santorum and Paul), 1 very, very, very rich guy who is CLUELESS about what middle class America is like (Romney), and a liar and cheater (Gingrich).
Therefore, Republicans are going to be saying “Ouch!” this coming November, when Obama takes the White House again… LMAO!

It would be more credible if the cringing weasel went on the record so we could know who he is and who he is really supporting. As it is, could be any of a number of the current herd of Republican RINOs roaming the Senate floor.
If Republicans could just get over this quest for a “perfect” candidate who passes all the various litmus tests and get behind Romney – a candidate who will pull independents and moderates away from Obama – they could win this in a walk. To badly paraphrase Patton, “A good (or even adequate) candidate aggressively supported now is better than hoping for a perfect candidate next month.)

This article is a joke…. I am about as anti-Santorum and anti-Gingrich as there is and I will be damned if some “Phantom No-Name Senator” speaks for me on recruiting another candidate to replace Romney as a representative of the Normal Republicans… Any individual who would pop in at the last moment to do that would also be considered a jerk in my opinion and I would be surprised if they would gain any traction….
The problem we have today is that we have allowed the Far Right Factions of the Evangelical and Tea Party crowd to form a Mob Like Presense and they have controlled Republican Politics for the past 3 years…. We all thought that it was healthy back then, today it’s a cancer…They helped the party win some congressional seats in 2010 but they also made us lose control of the senate by shoving candidates down our throats like Angle in NV, O’Donnell in DE, Buck in CO, and Miller in AK…. They’re candidates are too extreme for General Elections…. Hell, I’m a lifelong Republican and they’re too extreme for me…
Romney is a strong candidate and he has the best chance of upending Obama…. In fact, I don’t think that there is anyone else in our party that can…. Jack Welch, possibly this country’s best all around CEO (formerly with GE before Retiring a few years ago) has publicly said numerous times: “In my lifetime, Mitt Romney is the most qualified leader I’ve ever seen run for the Presidency of the United States…” And Jack Welch is right…
Bottom line is, Romney is probably the only candidate on either side of the aisle that can fix this country, and just as important… Romney is the only GOP Candidate that can beat Obama.

We haven’t seen a brokered convention in decades. We’re actually overdue for one. All the GOP candidates are deeply flawed. The nomination was Romney’s to lose and he’s lost it. But there’s no one running who has won it. I don’t know who the nominee will be but I don’t think it will be any of these guys and I think America has seen enough of the Bushes thank you.

We need to take the party back! I am so da** sick of chirping Sarah and her crap about finding the most conservative candidate. The Tea Party, the Evangelicals, and the ultras have nitpicked everyone to death. Pig Newton and Father Santorum will not ever win. If the party was united behind Romney we would be sitting in the catbird seat right now. United we stand; divided we fall…anyone ever hear that phrase? BTW notice how tired and woebegone Mrs. Santorum looks? Don’t know if it the eight kids or being tied to the stove barefooted. LOL

Just take a look at the field. You would imagine that with the President’s low approval rating and the ailing economy that there would be a much strong field. But I think the Republicans who did not run, like Huckabee, Palin, and others, know something we do not. Obama is a much tougher opponent than most Republicans anticipate.
Even if the economy was a 1930s depression, Barak Obama will not be easily defeated and many conservative hopefuls know it! I am sure in 2016 we will see a very large and strong GOP field because they think it will be a much easier win. Lets just face it, its still unlikely that the GOP will defeated Barak Obama this time. So sad, yet probably true, expecially with the liberal media aiding the President.
I say, if conservative Republicans want to white house back. They need to rally behind a candidate they believe in, not a candidate who looks good, sounds good, and that the media thinks would win. Poll numbers wont mean much now until we know who it is. A lot things will happen between now and November!
And as for this Senator, whoever he is, Jeb Bush? Well you just shot your credibillity to hell

Wow… Romney…. uhm, sort of a stupid move here, don’t you think?
I mean, look at this picture… it’s a picture of a really rich guy (Romney-Son), holding up a picture of another rich guy (Romney-Dad), reminding all of us of how Romney-Son has no clue what it’s like to be middle class America. Uhm, pretty smart move their MItt (“duhh!”). And the sad part is that Romney-Son was pushing for the U.S. auto industry to fail, when he didn’t support the auto bailout, and the U.S. auto industry is how Romney-Dad made his millions.
Republican candidates are pretty shallow, and so are many that vote for them.

This republican primary has been a blood bath and now all the candidates are tainted by all the mud slinging. They have only themselves to blame for this and the voters are not about to make things worse in this country. The republican led house has also earned the ire of the voters for not thinking of country first. The American people are fast becoming disgusted with the politics of both parties but, which will be the lesser of two evils is what this election will be about.

Mark my words Brian, because of his position on drawing down bases overseas which seriously impacts big corporate backers of the GOP (military contract corporations), Ron Paul will never make it to the White House as long as he’s running under the Republican party banner. It’s not the candidate, it’s the fact that Republican party is waking up to the fact it’s drunk its on kool aid. The party has been so obsessed with the defeat of Obama, that it was willing to say or do about anything that would give it a perceived advantage. The one problem is, it has no solutions, the American people are waking up and sensing the party has been taking its queues from the likes of Frank Luntz and right wing media for to long. “How about Neil Bush? “———————–Whoa , now there’s a toxic unwanted blast for the past . I know you are being sarcastic but the truth is that he probably COULD run an effective campaign given the childish revisionist nature of the conservative electorate and indeed many “moderates” as well . I can’t understand the infatuation some certain Americans have with continuously flogging themselves and their country by electing people with (R) beside their names . What good have they ever done for anyone but Big Oil , Big Business in general , Wall St. , the 1%ers and the Defense Industry( especially their chummy private contractors ) ? A: Not much , if anything . Bush had 8 years and cut taxes for the rich ostensibly to create jobs , so where are all those jobs that were supposed to be created ?Obviously they weren’t created in the USA , that’s pretty easy to see . Hint : Reagan / Bush / conservative mantra Trickle Down economics are precisely what is KILLING the US economy and has been sucking the GDP growth from the bottom earners and transferring that gravy to the the top 1-5% of Americans since Reagan . Now the inequity is too much for the US economic system ( and most of the American peoples’ sense of fairness ) to bear and it’s showing with OWS type protests alL over the USA and in many other areas of US society as well . Trickle Down DOES NOT WORK , other than to make the already rich even richer , obviously and clearly . Period . Quit voting for Rs and you’ll see this country start turning a positive corner , otherwise expect more of the same .

LOL!

Second, you’d better pray VERY hard that gas prices go back down, like, lets say under $3.00/gallon and very soon, or it may be YOUR party that says “ouch” this November..

I don’t know davem, we haven’t had trickle down economics since 2007 when your part took over both houses of Congress under Bush. Your party controlled both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and it was at that time that the recession hit.
The Republicans have had very little if any power even after the elections of 2010. Your party still dominates even today.

Wow! This counts as journalism? “A prominent Republican Senator”? Tell us who, moron! If it was someone like Jim Demint, this might mean something. However, I’m sure it is someone no one would care about and that’s why the article doesn’t give the Senator’s name.

Yes, we need a new candidate…for senator anonymous’ seat. If we only had 1 candidate, there would be no need for the citizens to choose who we want to serve us in a primary or caucus. You would just ordain it for us.
I know democracy disturbs those who have already been elected via that democracy and would like to make it a dictatorship now that you’re in. Which is why those elected need both term limits and replacement. In short, you’re fired, senator anonymous. Sit down and shut up while those who hire you pick who we are hiring to run for President.

So why do you “care” about Demint? Why does HIS opinion matter to you above someone elses? You are partially correct here, though. It really IS some Republican that no one cares about. Regardless of who it actually is. Whoever it is, he wanted to be kept anonymous, since he speaks the truth here, and the Republicans hate when one of their own does that.

This comment just shows how tone deaf the Republican establishment is. They’re pushing one candidate (Romney) who plays perfectly as President Obama’s foil in his 99% vs. 1% rhetoric, and if that one loses, they’re going to push another perfect foil? The last thing any Republican or conservative should want is to give President Obama the opportunity to shift the focus from his own record and to run against George W. Bush’s record again. We’ve already seen how that works out.
The mood of the base and the country is against perpetual insiders. It associates legacies and dynasties with business as usual. It wants new blood with fresh ideas and no allegiances to the old order. If the establishment is too out of touch to realize that, then there may not be any Republican candidate—in the campaign or on the sidelines—who can unite both the establishment and the Tea Party.

“Wow! This counts as journalism? “A prominent Republican Senator”?” My sentiment exactly. 2012 is about ideology, it is not about individual politicians. With exception of course of Obama, who is ruining our economy and shredding the constitution that has served us so well. “What ‘s troubling me is the nature of his game” and the consummate idiocy of democrats that vote for smiles, tingle up the legs and creases in the pants. I get a tingle in my spine when I hear anybody passionately speaks about the freedom we have, and get forlorn to think how many are so removed from those that have fought and died to provide and maintain it, that they actually consider this piece journalism.

I don’t blame the unnamed senator for desiring anonymity when he proposes something as outlandish as Jeb Bush as the replacement candidate. That’s my deal breaker. As much as I distrust Romney, there is no way in hell’s half acre that I could bring myself to allow that family another term in office. Unbelievable. Also, how about you bored liberals and Democrats bug off – we’re not interested in your opinions on this topic. Jeb Bush? You mean someone that had more important things to do than run for the Presidency? Someone who chose to lie low in the weeds & not to be vetted in the primaries, like our other valiant, dedicated candidates?
If that’s the opinion of one of our top Senators, no wonder our country’s in such turmoil. And thank God you kept the Senator’s name hidden. Otherwise, you may’ve damaged his political career.

Republicans don’t need a new candidate. If there was anybody better he/she would have run. The problem is everybody except the people who actually ran are afraid of the news media. Obama could be and should be beat just about anybody. Too many people see Obama as some kind of Once in a Lifetime candidate that is just so unbeatable, especially since he knocked out Hillary. Truth be told he was a blank slate and Hillary had more baggage the airlines. He is no longer a blank slate and all of his baggage will come back to actually haunt him this time around.

Jeb Bush? NO MORE BUSHES! Two feeble, spineless liberals named Bush are as much as I can handle, another one is not needed. Whoever that Senator is who thinks that Obama could win 35 states against Jerry Sandusky is completely out of touch with reality. I’m glad he stayed anonymous because he’s one of the usual lib suspects who are determined to keep the Obama-Reid-Pelosi baseline in place until we go completely bankrupt and knowing his name would make me stop cursing all the Republiclown lib sellouts instead of just one. How shameful that our fellow Republicans are stupid enough to elect these Republiclown libs. This election is going to be about Barak Obama and the Democrat’s total failure and the mess that this country is in because of their misconceived policies, nothing else. That we have such defeatist cowards leading our party is sickening.

I’d guess the unamed Senator is either Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, John McCain, Lindsey Graham., or John Thune. Either way, if Romney loses to Santorum, he has a lot of explaining to do since his electability status will have been shredded. Romney likely needs to win the swing state of Michigan to beat Obama looking at the electoral map. So if Romney loses it in the primaries, he faces a grim outlook. And I think Romney will lose given his lack of charisma and his poor messaging skills.

The problem isn’t the candidates, it’s the party. For many years the party elite have managed to manipulate the less educated social conservative masses into backing their pro-rich platform by cynically wrapping themselves in Christian rhetoric and bigotry, neither of which were really authentic. But with the failure of Reaganomics, the heightened awareness of the severity of our wealth inequality and the continued progress towards equality and tolerance, the pressures between the wealthy elite party establishment and the socially conservative voters got too great. The Republican footsoldiers bucked at the reins. The elites lost control of the forces they were trying to manipulate and the hate and ignorance went rampaging through the country in the forms of Fox News and the Tea Party.
Now there are two GOPs. Romney represents the traditional wealthy elites the party has always served and Santorum represents all the hate and ignorance those elites cultivated.
Just changing up the candidates won’t heal that wound. Until those two factions reconcile, any new candidate will meet the same fate. A candidate that is willing to stoop down to the depraved depths of ignorance and hate demanded by the social conservatives lacks the reasonability and electability demanded by the elites, but that very reasonability and electability makes a candidate unacceptable to the social conservatives. It’s a pickle for sure, but adding another candidate to the mix won’t fix it.

Ron Paul anyone? Anyone… RON PAUL!! Your Constitution is under attack and is on serious life support. And you want another Bush again? This Jonathan Karl story is just plain silly on several levels. Giving Karl the benefit of the doubt that such a comment was really made but this unnamed GOP senator, my educated guess is that it might well have been some older career senator who is personally jealous of the success of the younger Santorum and who is desperate to salvage something from all the establishment time and money that has been wasted in the Romney campaign which so far as not produced a coronation. Romney has no one to blame but himself for his failure to connect with voters or articulate any vision for the rest of us beyond his personal resume. He does not have a vision and it isjust that simple. He has all the money any candidate should need for a nomination fight but no real fire in the belly. So far, the career establishment Republicans have not been able to pull him across. But whoever Karl’s source is, he is living in a distant ice age past. Neither party has gone beyond one ballot for president since the Democrats did 60 years ago at the 1952 convention in Chicago. That was before wall to wall television coverage. The reason is there are no power brokers who have the means to deliver blocs of delegates, not even governors. The senator or Karl are naive if they think there is time between now and Tampa to launch a new candidate. That train left the station, they are stuck with Romney and might wind up with Santorum instead who at least will be able to energize the GOP base even if he does not get the so-called “moderates” who according to popular legend decide the election. But that premise is also nonsense because recent history proves the party that motivates its base to turn out is the one that wins, not the party that offers up a milquetoast place holder like Romney.

Plantain_11….Republicans have plenty of ideas. The problem? They involve ACTUAL reforms of the entitlement nation. Harry Reid sits on 27 bills passed by the House. If you have an obstructionist, Democrat-led Senate, what are they supposed to do? I don’t think you have any basis for saying Republicans don’t have ideas. You just want to resort to the Democrat playbook: Ignore facts.

Seriously…Jeb Bush? Anyone hear the name George W. Bush recycled this far in the GOP primary circus? The Bush name remains toxic so I’m hard pressed to see how Jeb Bush is an improvement over Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich. It’s about time Republicans face the fact that they have no real leadership, not that Democrats are in any better condition. Both parties are spent and if the American people had any sense they’d demand changes to the political system that would terminate political dominance by two parties that are out of ideas, energy, and leadership.

At this late date you’d need a candidate with a good amount of name recognition for them to actually be competitive in the upcoming primaries.
If a potential candidate didn’t want to undergo the usual primary grind it’s doubtful they would opt for the manic, compressed form.
If republicans want to win in November they should start planning now for a brokered convention.

I’m not huge Obama fan, but I really don’t see that he’s doen anything to upset moderates like myself. Once you peel away all the selective outrage of the right and actually look at Obama’s policies, you’ll find him to be very conservative in many ways. And healthcare reform, the thing Republicans seem to hate most was much need and Obama was the one to get something done. Perfect? No. But something. If the Republicans had better ideas they should have done them when Bush was in charge or at least participate with Obama. Instead they just whined. Bottom line? The GOP should start looking for another candidate—-better yet an alternate to that candidate because Romney will lose Michigan to Rick Santorum. And, even if Santorum becomes the nominee, he will not be president of the United States. The truth should be told that whoever the party puts up as the challenger, Obama will still be president of the United States in November of 2012. God protects America. Sorry folks, but the people who run the country want Jeb Bush v. Obama. All of this Republican primary nonsense is intended to create a fragmented party, resulting in brokered Repub convention in…where??? Jeb’s home state of Florida! He will ride in as the White Knight and accept the nomination. At that point, there will only be 2 months left in the campaign for the American people to realize what a huge mistake it will be to elect another Bush Leaguer, and Jeb probably would have a better than 50-50 chance. As we have seen in the primary process…the “flavor of the day” lasts actually about 3 months before media/internet scrutiny has caught up to Bachmann/Palin/Perry/Cain/Huntsman/Paul/Gingrich. Jeb hopes that the people won’t have that long to decide he’s not right either.
