Nancy Hamilton, wife of former Rep. Lee Hamilton of Indiana, died after sustaining injuries in a car accident on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton, 82, who had been taking a pet to the veterinarian, was hit by her car as she got her pet out of the vehicle. According to Bloomington, Ind., Police Captain Joe Qualters, when Hamilton pulled into the parking lot of the clinic, she failed to put the vehicle into park.

"The vehicle rolled back on her, knocked her down and then rolled over her," Qualters said. Hamilton was treated at IU-Bloomington hospital and died hours after the accident.

Lee Hamilton currently serves as director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, according to his bio. He began work with the Center after retiring from over 30 years in the House, and since his departure from Washington has also served as the vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission and as co-chairman of both the Iraq Study Group and the Independent Task Force on Immigration and America's Future.

The Hamiltons have three children and five grandchildren.

A representative from the Center on Congress declined to comment when reached by phone.
