Romney, after a fundraiser and giving some grandkids a tour of his plane, emerged in public on Fox News at 4 p.m. He pointed to an old recording of Barack Obama seeming to endorse "redistribution." And he was asked if he was calling people "moochers."

CAVUTO: Now you said that your wording might have been inelegant, but others have said that you've just kissed half the electorate goodbye this election year. That you all but called them moochers. Did you?

ROMNEY: No I'm talking about a perspective of individuals who I'm not likely to get to support me. I recognize that those people who are not paying income tax are saying gosh this provision that Mitt keeps talking about, lowering income taxes, that's not going to be real attractive to them and those that are dependent upon government and those that think that government's job is to redistribute I'm not going to get them. I know there's a divide in the country about that view. I know that some believe that government should take from some and give to the others. I think the president makes it clear in the tape that was released today that that's what we believes. I think that's an entirely foreign concept. I believe America was built on the principle of government caring for those in need but getting out of the way and allowing free people to pursue their dreams, free people pursuing free enterprises is the only way we'll create a strong and growing middle class and the only way we'll help people out of poverty.

A good chunk rely on the government for health care. Far fewer rely on the government for housing or food (although record numbers of Americans receive food stamps). More than 30 percent of them voted for John McCain. http://abcn.ws/PPQ5ZZ

'98 Obama - "And my suggestion, I guess, would be that the trick - and this is one of the few areas where I think there are technical issues that have to be dealt with as opposed to just political issues - I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution," he said, "because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure everybody's got a shot." The Romney campaign signaled that it plans to make the comments a focal point of its messaging in the coming days.
