GUN CONTROL The Hills' Justin Sink: " Biden gives hints on guns; NRA criticizes after meeting with VP" Vice President Biden on Thursday gave the strongest hints yet on what the White House's gun violence task force is considering, and said he would present his recommendations to President Obama by Tuesday. "There is an emerging set of recommendations not coming from me, but coming from the groups we have met with," Biden said at the opening of a meeting with sportsmen and wildlife interest groups - the first of three meetings he held Thursday on gun violence. USA Today's Aamer Madhani: " NRA blasts Biden's gun task force after meeting" The National Rifle Association took aim Thursday at the White House task force on gun violence led by Vice President Biden, suggesting that the Obama administration is focused on imposing unnecessary restrictions on lawful gun owners in the aftermath of last month's shooting tragedy in Connecticut. The powerful gun rights organization's sharp rebuke followed a meeting with Biden and gun-owners groups to discuss the White House's response to recent mass shootings. LINK

The New York Daily News' Dan Friedman: " Vice President Joe Biden's plan to curb gun violence falls on deaf ears in meeting with National Rifle Association" The National Rifle Association came out firing Thursday after meeting with Vice President Biden on curbing gun violence, calling the sitdown worthless and vowing to thwart new gun laws in Congress. The politically powerful lobbying group issued a scathing statement accusing the White House of waging war on the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Colleen McCain and Gary Fields: " Biden's Gun Push Draws NRA Ire" Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday he would recommend the White House push for broad measures to stem gun violence, citing growing support for tighter background checks on gun purchasers, restrictions on high-capacity clips and other moves. But the National Rifle Association delivered a swift rebuke following a meeting with Mr. Biden, saying the administration was gearing up for an attack on gun ownership. LINK

NATIONAL DEBT The Washington Times' Susan Crabtree: " White House won't rule out $1T coin proposal " Even though it sounds like a headline in The Onion, a White House spokesman Wednesday repeatedly refused to rule out a bizarre-sounding proposal to mint a $1 trillion platinum coin that would allow the federal government to unilaterally raise the debt-ceiling if Congress fails to act. During a briefing with reporters, press secretary Jay Carney flatly said there is "no plan B, there is no backup plan" to avoid defaulting on the nation's debts if Congress refuses to increase the nation's borrowing limit. TAXES Politico's Jake Sherman and Steven Sloan: " Tax reform prospects ebb in wake of cliff deal" This is supposed to be the year that Washington finally locks arms and tidies up the littered Tax Code. Don't count on it. LINK
