Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today that it was time to take a breath and regroup in the wake of a sweeping defeat on gun legislation this week.
“I’ve spoken with the president,” Reid said on the Senate floor. “He and I agree that the best way to keep working towards passing a background check bill is to hit a pause and freeze the background check bill where it is.”
He added: “We’re going to come back to this bill.”
It remains an open question when, how and whether the White House and Reid can rally more support for the gun legislation.
But Reid took the bill off the floor – a legislative maneuver – intended to keep his options alive.
