Bush Still ‘Very Comfortable’ With Iraq Decision – “We’re just laying out the facts. And that was a fact,” Bush said. “I am comfortable in the decision-making process. I think the removal of Saddam Hussein was the right decision for not only our own security but for giving people a chance to live in a free society. But history will ultimately decide that, and I won’t be around to see it.
“As far as I’m concerned, the debate is over. I mean, I did what I did. And historians will ultimately judge those decisions.” http://abcn.ws/17XkmxG
Boston Attacks ‘Harkened Back’ to His Presidency -“Whether it be that or the explosion at West, Texas, I mean it harkened back to days where you become the comforter in chief … try to help heal souls that are hurting,” Bush said. When he first heard about the Boston attacks, Bush said, he worried about an organized, coordinated terrorist plot. “I was deeply concerned that there might’ve been an organized plot,” Bush said of the Boston attacks. “I don’t know all the facts. I don’t think we all know all the facts. But I was deeply concerned that this could’ve been, you know, another highly organized attack on the country. And it still may be–again, I don’t know all the facts.” http://abcn.ws/ZrqmwB (Good)

‘Painting has Changed My Life’ – George Bush on his Bathtub Self-Portrait – “I love to paint. It is — painting has changed my life in an unbelievably positive way,” the former president said. Bush has said he was inspired to paint by reading Winston Churchill’s “Painting as a Pastime.” He told Sawyer that his new activity has helped him continue to learn, following the example of his father, former President George H.W. Bush. “You know what the interesting lesson is though, that you can keep learning in life. I mean, some guy one time said to me, ‘Man, you deserve to rest.’ And I don’t wanna rest. I wanna live life to the — I wanna follow the example of President 41 and, you know, sprint into the grave.”
He’s also particularly proud of one of his self-portraits, which leaked online earlier this year when someone hacked a relative’s e-mail account. That painting shows his own toes poking out of a bathtub, with the water running. “By the way, that’s not that easy to paint, water hitting water just so, you know, and the perspective… It’s a beauty, isn’t it?” he said. “It may reflect my precocious nature, me painting myself in a bathtub,” he added half-seriously, playing art critic. http://abcn.ws/145K1ov (Klein)
Does Boston Bombing = Drone Strike? - A Yemeni man whose village was struck by American drones equated that practice with the Boston bombing in testimony before U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday. Farea-al-Muslimi, who was educated in the U.S. courtesy of a State Department scholarship and now works as an activist and fixer for journalists in Yemen, said the face of America in his home country is the face of drones and that they are helping al Qaeda turn his countrymen against the United States.
“I am from Wessab, a remote mountain village in Yemen, about nine hours’ drive from my country’s capital, Sana’a,” said al-Muslimi before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “Most of the world has never heard of Wessab. But just six days ago, my village was struck by a drone, in an attack that terrified thousands of simple, poor farmers. The drone strike and its impact tore my heart, much as the tragic bombings in Boston last week tore your hearts and also mine,” he said.
Al-Muslimi put a human face on the targeted killing program, which has been in use in the war on terror for more than a decade. But this was the first public hearing on the matter in Congress, according to Sen. Dick Durbin. The Illinois Democrat has been a political mentor to President Obama, but has pushed the president on the issue of targeted killing program. http://abcn.ws/144j5pb
Terror Tally – Congressman Compares Bush #s to Obama #s – John Parkinson reports Rep. Tom Cotton, a freshman Republican from Arkansas, went to the House floor this afternoon to “express grave doubts about the Obama Administration’s counterterrorism policies and programs” and contrast President Obama’s and Bush’s records to protect the country from terrorism after 9/11. “Counterterrorism is often shrouded in secrecy, as it should be, so let us judge by the results,” Cotton, who served tours as an infantry officer in Iraq and Afghanistan, said. “In barely four years in office, five jihadists have reached their targets in the United States under Barack Obama: the Boston Marathon bomber, the underwear bomber, the Times Square Bomber, the Fort Hood shooter, and in my own state—the Little Rock recruiting office shooter. In the over seven years after 9/11 under George W. Bush, how many terrorists reached their target in the United States? Zero! “We need to ask: Why is the Obama Administration failing in its mission to stop terrorism before it reaches its targets in the United States?” he said. http://abcn.ws/10AbGgx

White House Likes Reid’s Plan to Delay Sequester Cuts- With the effect of across-the-board spending cuts rippling throughout the country, the White House today said President Obama supports Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s proposed plan to delay additional sequester cuts temporarily. “We support this effort to allow both sides to find a longer-term solution that replaces the sequester permanently in a balanced way so we can stop these harmful cuts that are hurting our economy and middle-class families across the country,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters at the daily briefing. http://abcn.ws/17TLTxj (Mary Bruce)
