‘Best Looking’ AG? Obama Says Its Kamala Harris - Obama’s comment in California Thursday that Kamala Harris is the “best looking attorney general” started something of a Twitter furor. We’ll see if that translates into actual criticism. Also – besides potentially offending some women, there is the matter of accuracy. Shouldn’t Beau Biden be in the running? – http://abcn.ws/13VgkqA  (Arlette Saenz)

Earlier in the day he said gun control would be harder to enact than immigration reform. Gun control, we’re told, is supposed to come first. Who will be the first to wonder if one could poison the well for the other – http://abcn.ws/14HFzMi

Last night it was climate change (with Keystone XL proestors outside) – Arlette says: “While the president discussed climate change at both fundraisers, he did not specifically cite the Keystone XL pipeline, which drew opposition from protesters Wednesday evening as the administration is set to determine the project’s fate in the coming months.” http://abcn.ws/14GC8oT

Majority Now Support Marijuana Legalization, Poll Finds – For years, supporters of marijuana legalization have pointed to polls trending their way, claiming the issue was about to tip as favorable to a majority of Americans. (Chris Good) http://abcn.ws/14Hhl4L

Chris Good points out these other marijuana angles from the PEW study:

Pew shows fewer think pot is morally wrong, more people have smoked it, and 70% of those who’ve smoked it think it should be legal

Socially liberal America: Marijuana and gay marriage have trended on broadly parallel tracks, as more people have personal experiences with both issues

Hollywood leads the way. Depiction of marijuana in TV and film paved the way for broader cultural acceptance

When will big-time politicians start backing legalization? Reps. Polis, Blumenauer, and Rohrabacher are leading the way in the House, but like gay marriage, pot will be an issue on which the public will lead the politicians. This is something marijuana backers have long predicted.

What states are next up for legalization? As a non-presidential year, 2014 is tougher for new pot laws.

Bill Nelson Flips For Gay Marriage – Sunlen Miller reports that with the Florida Senator’s change in position,  there are now six Senate Democrats still opposed. http://abcn.ws/Y0N3ml

Few are already in effect. http://uninews.us/YVK9CH (Emily Deruy)

Immigration System Costs Economy $30 Billion Per Year, Says Study- The nation’s complex system of immigration laws costs the economy tens of billions of dollars per year, according to a new study released Thursday. As Congress prepares to take up a major immigration overhaul, the center-right think tank American Action Forum argues that policymakers should consider eliminating or streamlining the long list of regulations that are required to navigate the immigration system. http://abcn.ws/10C3oy6 (Jordan Fabian)

Strategist James Carville ‘Ready for Hillary’- The 2016 presidential race is still a few years away, but James Carville believes sooner is better than later. In an email blast from the Ready for Hillary super PAC Thursday morning, the Democratic strategist issued a rallying cry for a Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential run and urged members to take an “I’m Ready for Hillary Pledge.” http://abcn.ws/13UYKD7 (Anjuli Sastry)

Santorum ‘Leaving the Door Open’ to 2016- Will Rick Santorum run for president again, next time around? He’s not ruling it out. “I’m certainly leaving the door open for that,” Santorum told Newsmax TV’s Steve Malzberg in a recent interview. “I’m making no commitments at this point, but we’re not doing anything inconsistent with running in 2016.” http://abcn.ws/12jHLck (Chris Good)

Hillary Clinton Book to Hit Shelves in 2014- Hillary Clinton has inked a book deal with Simon & Schuster to write a wide-ranging book that the publisher says will cover “dramatic moments” from her tenure as secretary of state, “frame her thoughts about the recent history of U.S. foreign policy and the urgent, ongoing need for American leadership in a changing world.”

The book, which so far does not have a title, is tentatively scheduled to be published in June 2014, according to The Associated Press. http://abcn.ws/YV1k7h (Michael Falcone)

Mark Sanford’s Primary Win Demonstrates Power of Forgiveness After Scandal – Mark Sanford’s triumphant return to politics with his victory in a Republican primary for his former South Carolina House seat at least partly demonstrates the power of redemption among voters for candidates who slip badly but come clean and seek forgiveness. http://abcn.ws/YxX9ij (Shushannah Walshe)
