PM Note: We've Crossed This Broken Bridge Before

We've Crossed This Bridge Before - If you think a major freeway bridge collapsing is going to lead to a rash of new infrastructure spending to repair the hundreds of risky bridges in this country, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Even though President Obama made fixing bridges one of the support beams of his reelection campaign - he held multiple campaign events at the base of bridges - the two sides haven't come together on new infrastructure spending. And it hasn't been at the top of anyone's todo list.

Here's a full wrap-up from Abby Phillip on what they have done in Washington (pass a Transportation Bill) and what they haven't (allocate nearly enough money).

She also got this choice quote:

"Infrastructure has always been non-partisan," said Rob Puentes, director of the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program. "The reason that it's contentious in Washington is because the morning prayers are contentious in Washington." http://abcn.ws/10S4Ps0

Bridge collapses, by the way, particularly when there is no loss of life, are great for headline puns.

Collapse Unlikely to Move Congress.

Bridge Collapse Likely To Fall on Deaf Ears in Congress.

40 Percent of 5 Things to Pay Attention to Next Week - Check back at the politics page tomorrow for the rest of Rick Klein's advice on what to keep an eye on tomorrow.

For now, here's this from ABC's Political Director:

1. TAX DRIP - Week one of congressional hearings on the IRS scandal ended without full answers to big questions. We still don't know who actually ordered the targeting of conservative groups, why it didn't come out before the election, and how exactly President Obama appears to have been kept in the dark. One IRS official who might have some answers, Lois Lerner, took the Fifth - but Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., says she did it wrong and plans to haul her back in front of Congress. There's plenty of political mileage left in this story, and lawmakers will be home for the week to get an earful from constituents on the subject. The next play for Republicans is likely to use IRS snooping as an excuse to go after Obamacare, which includes an expanded role for the IRS itself in administration and enforcement.

2. OK BY THEM - President Obama visits tornado-damaged Oklahoma on Sunday, an opportunity for him to revive his role as consoler-in-chief. And on Tuesday, he'll be on the Jersey shore to celebrate the first post-Sandy summer, alongside New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., with or without his fleece. Waiting for the president back in Washington is the possibility of an interesting debate over disaster funding. Several members of Oklahoma's congressional delegation were among the most vocal critics of a Sandy funding bill that paralyzed Congress around the New Year, with accusations of pork-barrel spending and an insistence that money for disaster relief be paid for with cuts elsewhere in the budget. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., insists that he'll hold funding for his own state to the same standard, but others aren't fond of the precedent that sets. Oklahoma may not have to ask Congress for additional federal funds - FEMA has some $11 billion in its relief fund - but if and when that money runs dry, look for some uncomfortable statements and votes.

Investor Paul Tudor Jones Says Mothers Can't Be Top Traders- You won't read about this in Sheryl Sandberg's corporate empowerment book, "Lean In." In order to be a top-flight trader, you need focus, determination, a way with numbers and no children, according to controversial comments made recently by billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones. http://abcn.ws/133PJ5R (Alisa Wiersema)

Rand Paul Impresses Iowa Voters, Still Loses to Hillary Clinton- Hillary Clinton sits at the top of the pack in a new poll of Iowa voters, but her closest competition is firebrand Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a new poll found. Clinton would beat rising-star Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., handily, 48 to 37 percent, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released today. But Paul trails her by only 4 points. http://abcn.ws/10Y7zp0 (Abby Phillip)

Obama Nods to Drones in Naval Academy Speech- President Obama gave a nod to his newly articulated drone policy as he addressed the graduating class of the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday. "We still face threats from al Qaeda affiliates and individuals caught up in its ideology," Obama said, addressing the academy's graduation ceremony in Annapolis, Md. "Will still need to conduct targeted strikes against terrorists before they kill our citizens." http://abcn.ws/Z5ntAr (Abby Phillip, Ann Compton)

Did Obama Forget to Salute? - The president may have forgotten something as he boarded Marine One this morning. On his way to the U.S. Naval Academy graduation ceremony on Annapolis, Md., President Obama didn't return the salute of the marine standing guard at the door of Marine One, as he climbed the steps to the helicopter cabin. http://abcn.ws/124enYv (Chris Good)

Michelle Obama Freeze-Dances East of the River - First lady Michelle Obama and actress Kerry Washington stopped by Savoy Elementary School in southeast Washington, D.C., Friday to watch a song-and dance performance that included "Who Put the Bop" and a few other numbers. http://abcn.ws/124JkvA (Chris Good)
