Newark mayor and Senate hopeful Cory Booker (D. – NJ) is going bicoastal in his star-studded hunt for campaign cash.
A Booker campaign aide confirmed to ABC News that the mayor plans to tackle a slew of major fundraisers in Washington, D.C., before moving on to a high-profile event in New York City hosted by Ivanka Trump and her husband, businessman Jared Kushner.
According to RollCall.com, Trump and Kushner have bundled contributions totaling more than $40,000 for Booker’s campaign as he takes on Rep. Frank Pallone and Rep. Rush Holt to be the Democratic nominee in an October special election for the U.S. Senate seat of Frank Lautenberg, who died in June at age 89 .
Trump’s involvement with a Democratic campaign is a sharp contrast to her family’s tendency to side with Republican candidates in the past.
In 2012, she and real estate mogul father Donald Trump praised Mitt Romney’s business sense and endorsed him in the presidential election against Barack Obama. Donald Trump is also known to offer his conservative political views to the public while being rumored to contemplate political involvement.
Ivanka Trump is not the only famous face to switch sides in politics by joining the Booker bandwagon.
In April, former United Artists CEO and notable Hollywood Republican Jerry Weintraub hosted a fundraiser for Booker at his Beverly Hills mansion. The guest list included industry heavyweights like director Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, and actor Bruce Willis, who, like Trump, is considered to be a famous conservative.
Other notable Booker supporters include New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
As the special election primary deadline looms closer, Booker is making it clear that his campaign includes support from political stars too.
On Thursday, the mayor will spend the day in Washington. He’ll meet with the Duane Morris legal firm for an event hosted by veteran Democratic fundraisers, the lobbying firm the Podesta Group, and lobbyists at the law firm DLA Piper. In the evening, Heather Podesta is opening her home for a reception hosted by herself and several other influential D.C. Democrats, including Lanny Davis, and Ann and Vernon Jordan.
Booker’s campaign efforts currently boast $4.6 million in donated funds.
