Oprah Winfrey Fundraising for Cory Booker
New Jersey is getting some star power this week with Oprah Winfrey out to help Newark Mayor Cory Booker's Senate bid.
Winfrey is hosting a 200 person fundraiser for Booker in Jersey City and tickets range from $1,000 to $2,600.
The Sunlight Foundation has the invitation and the Booker campaign confirms the event at the Liberty House.
The talk show queen and Booker are close and Booker has appeared on her show. She even wrote in Time Magazine in 2011, "Cory Booker is a genius."
"He's Newark's biggest cheerleader now, but I'm looking forward to the day we all get to cheer him on wherever politically he chooses to go," Winfrey wrote when Booker was selected as part of "Time" magazine's 100 most influential people in the world.
Booker has already raised $4.6 million for his campaign in the past three months, ending June with $4.5 million in the bank.
The Democratic primary where he will face off against Rep. Frank Pallone, Rep. Rush Holt and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver is Aug. 13.
The most recent poll in the race from Monmouth University earlier this month showed Booker with 49 percent to Pallone with 12 percent, Holt at 8 percent, and Oliver with 3 percent. The general election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Frank Lautenberg last month will be Oct. 16.
