IMMIGRATION ABC News' Jordan Fabian: " House Democrats: Path To Citizenship Or Bust" House Democrats made it clear on Tuesday that they won't support any major immigration overhaul that does not include a pathway to citizenship. Party members in the lower chamber this morning huddled with the four Democrats on the so-called "Gang of Eight" that helped write the Senate's bill. After the meeting, House Democrats said that the path to citizenship is the one thing they won't sacrifice for votes on an immigration package. LINK

The New York Times' Ashley Parker and Jonathan Weisman: " Republicans In House Resist Overhaul For Immigration " Meeting for the first time as a group to hash out their approach to immigration, House Republicans on Wednesday came down overwhelmingly against a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, putting in jeopardy the future of sweeping legislation that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Despite the resistance, Speaker John A. Boehner warned about the steep price of inaction, telling House Republicans that they would be in a weaker political position against a bipartisan Senate coalition and President Obama if they did nothing to answer the immigration measure passed by the Senate last month. Politico's Jake Sherman, Seung Min Kim and John Bresnahan: " GOP Reaching Out To Dems On Immigration" The House Republican leadership is reaching out to top House Democrats to assess their support for a piecemeal approach to immigration reform, according to sources involved in the discussions. The House's immigration game plan is to pass individual bills rather than take the comprehensive approach advocated by the Senate. LINK

The Washington Times' David Sherfinski and Stephen Dinan: " Immigration Reform Unlikely This Year With House GOP Approach" House Republican leaders struck out on their own path on immigration Wednesday, saying they don't trust President Obama to secure the borders and rejecting the broad approach the Senate took in favor of tackling the issue in pieces - a move that severely dims chances for a final deal this year. "The American people want our border secured, our laws enforced, and the problems in our immigration system fixed to strengthen our economy. But they don't trust a Democratic-controlled Washington," the Republican leadership said in a joint statement after they emerged from a two-hour-long meeting with all House Republicans. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Sara Murray and Kristina Peterson: " Immigration Split Hardens In House" House Republicans coalesced Wednesday around a piecemeal approach to overhauling immigration laws, bucking pressure from the Senate and the White House to move quickly-and leaving unsolved the fate of millions of illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. Emerging from a closed-door meeting, GOP lawmakers were united on one front. Few had any appetite to take up a sweeping immigration bill that passed the Senate with bipartisan support. That sets the House up to rewrite immigration laws bit by bit. LINK

BEN BERNANKE The Boston Globe's Megan Woolhouse: " Bernanke Says Stimulus Measures Will Continue" Federal Reserve chairman Ben S. Bernanke on Wednesday offered no hint when the central bank might begin to rein in the extraordinary stimulus measures of the past few years, but said the US economy will need the Fed's help for the foreseeable future. Bernanke, speaking to economists at the Royal Sonesta Hotel here, said the economy is improving, but unemployment remains too high, at 7.6 percent in June. That figure "if anything overstates the health of our [labor] market," Bernanke said. LINK

CONGRESS The Hill's Erik Wasson: " House Moves To Set Up Vote On Split Farm Bill" The House will vote Thursday on a split farm bill containing updated subsidies for farmers but lacking a reauthorization of the food stamp program. After a day of furious whipping, House GOP leaders now believe they can pass the measure over the opposition of farm groups and some conservative organizations. The majority leader's office announced the vote just before midnight after the Rules Committee approved a rule for the farm bill that does not allow amendments. LINK

RUDY GIULIANI The New York Daily News' Joseph Straw: " Rudy Giuliani Says Political Correctness By Obama Administration Hurts Nation's Ability To Stop Terror Attacks" As alleged Boston bomber Dzhohkar Tsarnaev was about to be arraigned, Rudy Giuliani told Congress Wednesday that "political correctness" by the Obama administration may have thwarted efforts to stop the Boston attack. Testifying before the House Homeland Security Committee, the former New York mayor complained that the administration has become too cautious about identifying potential Islamic terror threats. LINK
