GOP: The Hill's Molly Hooper: " House GOP might call for vote on 'clean' hike to borrowing limit" House Republicans may hold a "clean" debt-ceiling vote this fall to prove to President Obama that it lacks the support to pass Congress. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) played that card in 2011 before the parties negotiated the Budget Control Act. At that time, the House voted overwhelmingly to oppose a clean debt-limit increase. The final tally was 318-97, as 82 Democrats joined every Republican in rejecting the bill. Seven Democrats voted "present." LINK

HILLARY CLINTON: The Washington Times' Seth McLaughlin: " Hillary Clinton is winning the name game for the 2016 presidential election" A slow August in political news has created a vacuum that the press and pundits are filling with Clinton-watch: the guessing game as to whether Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president in 2016, when she might announce and what effect her proto-campaign is having on President Obama's ability to govern. Despite her attempts to keep a low profile, Mrs. Clinton has remained in the headlines - most recently when scandal-plagued former Rep. Anthony D. Weiner said his wife, Huma Abedin, would play a role in Mrs. Clinton's 2016 campaign. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Meave Reston: " Ready for Hillary PAC expands team with two Southern Californians" As her fans wait for Hillary Clinton to decide whether she will run for president in 2016, the organization known as Ready for Hillary is expanding its team - adding two members from Southern California to help build a network of supporters that it hopes will spring into action if Clinton decides to enter the race. Thousand Oaks native Alissa Ko, who was the Obama campaign's Western regional operations director and organizer of its Asian American and Pacific Islander coalitions, is joining the organization as its deputy director. Ko, a graduate of UCLA, previously worked for Service Employees International Union Local 100 and Consumer Attorneys of California. LINK

TEA PARTY: Bloomberg's James Rowley: " Tea Party Finds It Harder to Get Attention on Health Law" During Congress's August break in 2009, the Tea Party movement helped Republicans demonstrate public anger about President Barack Obama's health-care legislation by showing up at rowdy town-hall meetings. This year, many of those same groups that now seek to deny funding for the health-care law's implementation are having to work harder to get Republican lawmakers' attention during their August break. EGYPT: The New York Times' Eric Schmitt: " Cairo Military Firmly Hooked to U.S. Lifeline" The money seems like a pittance for Egypt, which has a $256 billion economy. But the $1.3 billion in military aid that the United States gives the country every year is its main access to the kind of big-ticket, sophisticated weaponry that the Egyptian military loves. In fact, Egypt is so enamored of Apache attack helicopters, M1A1 battle tanks and F-16 fighter jets that exasperated American military officials have been telling generals there for years that they need to expand beyond the hardware of bygone wars and spend more American money on border security, as well as counterterrorism and surveillance equipment and training that a truly modern military needs. MEDIA: Politico's Dylan Byers: " Roger Ailes fires his 'right hand'" Fox News communications executive Brian Lewis served as Roger Ailes' guardian for 17 years, battling bad publicity with infamous zeal and unwavering loyalty. Then, on July 25, he was fired and escorted out of the building. LINK

THE FED: The Washington Post's Zachary Goldfarb: " Summers, Yellen allies wage behind-the-scenes effort to win Federal Reserve nod" Lawrence H. Summers, one of the top candidates to lead the Federal Reserve, was being beaten up, and his friends from his White House years wanted to help him. So earlier this month, recently departed Treasury secretary Timothy F. Geithner and other former Obama administration officials joined Summers for a private strategy call, according to people familiar with the discussion. LINK

RUBIO MEETS ZUCKERBERG: ABC News' Arlette Saenz: " Rubio To Meet With Zuckerberg Wednesday" Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., plans to meet with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in California on Wednesday, a source confirmed to ABC News. Though it is unknown what the senator and Facebook founder are planning to discuss, one topic of conversation could be immigration reform. Zuckerberg waded into the immigration debate earlier this year when he formed FWD.us, a group focused on advocating for immigration reform. LINK

GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE / MAYOR CORY BOOKER: The USA Today's Catalina Camia: " Christie Backs Former GOP Rival For Senate Over Booker" New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie endorsed his former GOP rival Steve Lonegan for U.S. Senate. Christie defeated Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, N.J., in a bitter 2009 primary for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Lonegan is in an uphill battle against Democrat Cory Booker for the Senate seat of the late Frank Lautenberg. A Republican hasn't won a Senate election in New Jersey since 1972, when Clifford Case was re-elected to what would be his final term. LINK
