NORAD Santa Tracker: A Christmas Eve Tradition

On Christmas Eve, children all around the world will lie awake  wondering if, at any moment, Santa Claus will slide down their chimneys and leave the presents of their dreams. But all they really have to do is call in or go online to find out where Santa and his team of reindeers are at any given moment.

Every year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command tracks Santa’s journey around the world, using radar, satellite, fighter aircraft and, of course, a “Santa Cam.”

The tradition began as so many do – by accident. In 1955, a little girl who saw a Sears and Roebuck ad called in to what she thought was a Talk-to-Santa hotline. But she did not hear Santa Claus on the other end of the line.

Instead, she heard Col. Harry Shoup. He was working in the CONAD ops center (NORAD’s predecessor) and was shocked to hear a child’s voice. According to a NORAD spokesperson, John Cornelio, only two people had the number for that line – the president and the four-star  ommander.

As it turned out, the department store had printed the wrong number in the ad and alas, a  tradition was born.

“It’s the innocence of the story that makes it so special,” Cornelio said. And Harry Shoup was given a new title- he is known as  Santa Colonel.

Since that innocent phone call more than 50 years ago, NORAD tracks Santa’s progress around the globe, year after year.

To track his journey this Christmas Eve, you can visit the NORAD website, or call in to 877-HI-NORAD.

The NORAD Santa Tracker also uses social media to connect with Santa enthusiasts. NORAD has Facebook and Twitter pages, and a YouTube channel. And this year, for the first time, NORAD has a smart phone application for Andriod and iPhone users.

NORAD expects more than 80,000 phone calls and 20 million people using its website to track Santa this year.

So come Christmas Eve, when not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse, break the silence and see just how close Santa is to bringing joy to your area.

No wonder that those 911 guys slipped past these idiots when they are busy “tracking Santa”. Shows where these incompetent fools majority of time is spent.

My daughter will be 4 next week. This year is the first year in which she’s able to truly grasp the concept of Santa Clause. She is so excited, and tracking Santa’s journey on NORAD gives it a little bit of extra ‘magic’ for her. Every so often, she asks me where he is, and if he’s any closer to our house. I know so many little ones really appreciate this bit of anticipation this tradition brings. I can’t wait to see my daughter’s face tomorrow morning when she finds the eaten cookies and footprints by the fireplace. Merry Christmas!

God Bless you guys, you guard our lives, and you provide this fun service. The idiots that think that NORAD and our 911 system are intertwined should be investigated for stupidity. Great job guys, my kids love it and I love that you show that the US have a sense of caring.

THEGRINCH: 9/11 was in September, this is a December event. They’ve made up for their lapse many times over since. If you think you can do so much better than the NORAD guys, then maybe you should shut up and join the military so you can contribute your superior Intelligence expertise, Internet tough guy. But you won’t, people like you never put their principals into practice!

Kudos to NORAD for their fine holiday tradition; at least they give kids something to look forward to at Christmas, unlike the Grinch.

Morale is a major factor in any military organization as well as society in general. I have no problems with NORAD providing a “Santa Tracker”, as NORAD was orinally created to guard against air strikes that originated outside the US by the Soviet Union and its allies and the FAA oversees commercial flights through unrestricted airspace. I have no doubt NORAD and other military personnel immiedately would have switched to alert mode had they detected incoming missiles or aircraft that posed a threat during the holidays. My personal gripe about people wasting their time and ours is reserved primarily for programmers who for years somehow had time to code Easter eggs in their software and yet no time to find and fix the bugs in it.

NORAD is doing nothing wrong by this — in fact, I bet a lot of those NORAD folks have young children or grandchildren of their own. There’s so much negativity in the world that it’s refreshing that the Santa tracker is offered to young kids who anticipate Christmas with excitement rather than adult-like cynicism.
