A new year, a whole new time for iPhone rumors. Just two days into 2013 some of the tech blogs are already hearing whispers - very quiet whispers - about Apple's next phone.

The Next Web reports that mentions of the iPhone 6 and iOS 7 have started to pop up in developer logs. Developer logs show app usage; an app creator can see what types of software and devices are being used to download and use apps.

"One developer showed us that Apple has been testing hardware relating to a new 'iPhone6,1- identifier, powered by a device running iOS 7, which is expected to be released by Apple in the middle part of this year," The Next Web's Matt Brian wrote. (Brian concedes those logs can be faked, though in this case he says it's unlikely.)

Adding to the mix is MacRumors, which cites a Topeak Capital Markets analyst's prediction that the next iPhone will be launched in March or April, come in a number of colors and screen sizes, and likely be called the iPhone 5S.

Apple launched the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 just five months ago in September. The launch of the phone was a bit later than in years past; the iPhone has typically launched in the summer time frame. It previewed iOS 6 - the software that ditched Google Maps and added Passbook and other tweaks - in June at its WWDC conference.

With past timing in mind - iPhones launching either in the summer or fall and new versions of iOS being previewed in June - it's no surprise that Apple's testing and working on the next versions of its phone and software. Heck, it's Apple - of course, it tests a number of different prototypes and versions of its products.

Either way, the new year is upon us and so are the next iPhone rumors.
