1943 Tehran Conference

President Roosevelt met with British PM Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in Iran to discuss an end to World War II and post-war strategies.  Iran was integral to the Allied forces during the war — the U.S. transported supplies to the Soviets through Iran because German forces had cut off routes in Europe.  At the conference, the “Big Three” leaders agreed on an invasion of Normandy, dubbed Operation Overlord.

1989 Freedom in Czechoslovakia

Velvet Revolution: After public outcry for change and mass protests, the communist party agreed to relinquish their monopoly on power in Czechoslovakia.  In December 1989, Vaclav Havel was elected president of the nation’s first non-communist government in over 40 years.

2002 Hotel Bombing in Kenya

Suicide bombers targeted an Israeli-owned Paradise Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya.  A car driven by the bombers crashed into the hotel’s reception area just minutes after a large Israeli tour group checked into the beach resort.  Most of the travelers had already left the check-in area, but the attack did kill a dozen people.  Around the same time as the hotel attack, missiles were fired at an Israeli-chartered plane taking off from the Mombasa airport in Kenya.  The missiles missed Arkia Airlines flight 582, which was carrying close to 300 people.
