Right now we begin with new trouble at the university of Virginia. This time hazing. A former member of the swim team filed a lawsuit against five teammates claiming he feared for his life because the hazing was so extreme. ABC's Mara schiavocampo with the story. Good morning. Mara. Reporter: Good morning. That student says he came to uva with dreams of competing at the highest levels but instead his time there ruined his athletic career. The claims just the latest in the string of image problems for the university. This morning, from the pool to the courtroom, 19-year-old Anthony Marcantonio taking on alleged hazing at uva filing a lawsuit claiming that systemic threatening, degrading, humiliating and violent hazing by five upper classmen cost him his swim career at the university. They threatened him with sexual violence of a very awful variety. They were locked into a bathroom and told to drink vast quantities of alcohol. They were imprisoned in the bathroom. Reporter: The suit claiming the upperclassmen berated and assaulted Marcantonio and other new team members known as welcome week. One of the new team members even allegedly sustained an eye injury during the activities. Allegedly told by one of the uppers to lie when questioned about how he got it. The team's question ed Marcantonio but when the teammates found out they saw him as a rat and from that time forward the plaintiff's swim year at uva was ruined. Interest that moment on he couldn't get in the pool when the other swimmers were there as the coach put it to him, I can't guarantee your safety. And he had to leave. Reporter: Following the reported hazing uva suspended the upper classmen for the rest of that semester. None of them ever rejoined the team. Two transferring to different schools. One of the parents of the upper classmen telling ab news on behalf of all the defendants they have not been served so can't comment on the suit adding "These issues are not new. They were internalally investigated by the university of Virginia and handled appropriately." Now, uva told ABC news overnight it investigated the allegations and, quote, took prompt action to provide support services to the affected opportunities. This lawsuit seeks damages of over $75,000 though the sack amount has not been disclosed. Mara, thanks very much.
