Transcript for Andra Day reveals plans for her inauguration performance
We want to turn to our next guest. Been looking forward to this for a while, singer, song writer actress, her hit song rise up became an anthem last year. And she is joining us to tell us about the preparations for her inauguration performance tomorrow as well as her new role playing Billie holiday in the highly anticipated hulu bio pick the United States versus Billie holiday. Please welcome the very talented Andra day. Thank you so much for being with we're so excited you're here. You have a lot of amazing things going on right now all at once. So let's talk about first the performance for tomorrow during the inauguration. What can you tell us about that and the parade across America? Yeah, I'm, first of all, just really excited and I was really honored to just be a part of this moment in history, and in my opinion, a moment for healing. I think it's time and it's long overdue for America, so I'm just honored to be a part of this. The performance we sort of were like thinking about what is appropriate in this time and what's a central part of the conversation, and I think social justice is a huge part of the conversation fortunately, and so we -- there's -- we definitely wanted to involve black lives matter. We wanted to involve -- actually, I don't know if you remember, I'm sure you do, the young girl Kaitlyn Saunders that was ice skating in the black lives matter plaza in D.C., so we've collaborated on our performance for the inauguration and I'm really excited about that, really excited about just her presence and her energy. We are so excited to watch and to listen to you, but also excited about this new film you're in. It's your first film, "The United States versus Billie holiday." I understand Billie holiday was one of your idols understandably. Interestingly, I also heard that you heard director Lee Daniels that you didn't want the role and you didn't think it was a good idea to cast you. Why? Well, first of all, because I'm not an actress. So I think we could start right there. That was the beginning and the end for me. I don't like being terrible, and I especially don't like being terrible in public. So I did tell him, I was -- you know, honestly it was a mutual feeling, you know. We were sort of thrust upon each other by our managers. I was interested in meeting him just because he's a great filmmaker and just a great, brilliant creator, but he felt the same way. He's like, you know, why would I need to go with an actress, she's a singer. I was trying to push him in that direction, you're right. Tell your manager I'm not an actress. So I was definitely terrified, but really, we connected so we had our first conversation and we connected just about her, you know, about life our similar insecurities and our concerns as far as the film goes. Did we hear right, you still haven't seen the movie because you don't want to watch yourself? You still haven't seen it? Andra. We're back to this. I still have not seen the movie. Andra, come on, when are you going to watch? I know. I don't know what's wrong with me. You know, so I was telling somebody the other day, you know, I've never listened to my album. Once I mastered it and put the album down, I never ever went back and listened. I'm definitely going to watch it, like at some point get with Lee and, you know, and just make it a special moment. And ra, this is not a good way to sell your movie. It's so good the lead actress hasn't even watched it. That's not the way to go. You all got to see this movie and then tell me how it is. I love it. Andra, it is so good to see you. We're going to let you go, listen to your music and watch your movie please. Thank you. Good luck tomorrow as well. So good to see you. Appreciate you all. Thank you. Andra's performance will be live streamed tomorrow and the new movie "United States versus Billie holiday" available hulu February 26th.
