Transcript for This book helps kids cope with virtual school jitters
For many children those first day jitters have been elevated with the challenges of school online. Luckily there's a new book to help ease their nerves and get a good start on the new year. It's called "Virtual, my first day of online school." Joining us now is the book's author Emma Fleeman. You weren't an author, but you saw a void that needed to be filled. Pretty impressed you got this book out. Why did you want to write about the first day of virtual school? I have a daughter. She started kindergarten last week. She loves reading. She loves school. We bought her all the welcome to kindergarten books we could find. Then covid happened. Our county decided to be fully virtual. I could see the nervousness she was developing and the children around her. I decided I needed to do something to help her and other children develop a sense of excitement instead of nervousness regarding online school. This is pretty cool. I understand your daughter's teacher used your book as a tool, not even knowing you had written it. What's the feedback been like? That was an amazing moment. My daughter did a little dance. We were on mute on the screen luckily. She was excited to see the book being read. The feedback has been wonderful. Everyone's been supportive as a community. A lot of grown ups said it helped their families to help children deal with the scariness that we're dealing with now. The one thing that's surprising is the use by teachers. We didn't anticipate that when we published it. What is your ultimate hope that other children and parents will take away from reading your book? When Kate Cohen, the illustrator, and I published this, our goal was children would be able to see themselves walking through the day and take the jitters, the nervousness, the scariness of this new experience and it could become something totally normal. Very exciting and not this scary unknown experience. The book is "Virtual, my first day of online school." Emma, thank you for being with us today and sharing that with us. Thank you for having me.
