He managed to hang on and was found by a familiar face. ABC's Marci Gonzalez is here with the story. Hey, Marci, good morning. Reporter: Dan, good morning. This was a bad situation that kept getting worse. He was trapped on a remote trail. He didn't have a phone or food with him. At one point a bad storm moved through. He said he had no doubt about how this would play out. I knew I was going to make it. Reporter: He has a broken hip and an incredible survival story. Howard coats pinned between this overturned four-wheeler and a tree after a crash, helplessly waiting to be found for three excruciating days. Not sure exactly how it happened. It ended up on top of me. It had my back shoved up against a tree. The tree actually gave me a tattoo. Reporter: The 66-year-old said he was out for a quick atv ride near his home in Idaho when he overturned becoming trapped just before night fall realizing quickly there was no way to free himself and no way to call for help. The first night or so I saw the police helicopters. They were flying all around me. They couldn't see me. Reporter: He was resourceful. Doing what he could to survive. Took the top off my tool box and used that to catch rain water. Reporter: In a situation that to others might seem hopeless, coats never lost faith in how it would end. From the time of the crash to the time I was found I just knew my son and my brother would find me and sure as hell that's who found me. Reporter: With that discovery Sunday, first responders helped free him from the wreckage getting him to the hospital where he was treated. I don't much believe in miracles. My wife said it is and I have to go with her story. Reporter: This morning coats is in a rehabilitation facility. He said other than the broken hip he feels great. He tells us he can't wait to get back to four Wheeling on that same trail again. Eva? Thank you. They always say that. I got bit by a shark I'm going back in the water. I fell off the atv, going back on it. Braver than anybody on this set. Coming up on "Good morning
