Back now on "Gma," and with many mother's day gatherings taking place outside today, a warning about possible deck dangers. ABC's Trevor Ault has more on the latest accident overnight. Probably like ten people on the back deck, and we heard it crack, and I literally saw all of my best friends and my girlfriend fall 15 feet. Reporter: This morning, a California birthday celebration taking a terrifying turn. Pacific coast highway, we have a balcony overlooking the pacific ocean with a collapse. At this time we have multiple patients. Reporter: Nine people injured, four taken to the hospital after investigators say the integrity of the deck combined with the weight of too many people caused this malibu beachfront balcony to collapse onto the rocks below. We're looking at possibly 10 to 15 feet. Take a good look at that, and down below jagged rocks, large rocks. Reporter: The home deemed unsafe. This is just the latest incident of balconies, porches and backyard decks that are suddenly crashing to the ground. Just last weekend more than 11 people were hospitalized when a restaurant deck collapsed during a birthday celebration outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2019, nearly two dozen crashing down from this three-story home in New Jersey. 225 east baker, multiple injuries reported. Reporter: And there was this incident in 2015. 24 family members injured as they were taking a group photo. Heard horrible screams, and my husband just came running in, called 911. Reporter: Of the more than 60 million decks in the country, about half of them need to be replaced or repaired. That's according to the north American deck and railing association, and experts say waterfront decks are particularly susceptible to damage. If they're near an ocean or a bay, you have more salt spray, and that salt spray can cause more corrosion on the fasteners and connecters. Reporter: And as millions of Americans plan to gather outdoors for mother's day, experts say you should be on the lookout for cracks in your balcony or deck. The biggest culprit in wooden structures tend to be rot or water damage, and it's important to check how many people or just how much weight your balcony can hold, Dan. Great advice on a mother's day morning. Thank you very much, Trevor.
