Transcript for Major US policy reversal over Israeli settlements on West Bank
Now to that major change in U.S. Policy toward the middle East. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo reversing a 40-year position now declaring that Israeli settlements on the west bank do not violate international law. Our foreign correspondent James Longman has the latest. Good morning, James. Reporter: Yeah, good morning, robin this. Is a major reversal in U.S. Policy. The Israeli settlements are communities established on land occupied by Israel and for 40 years the U.S. Has argued they are inconsistent with international law. But now the trump administration has changed its position and says this is an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to decide between themselves. Mike Pompeo said condemning that hasn't worked and this would increase the likelihood of peace but settlements and their continued expansion go to the heart of the conflict and competing claims to land like our decision to move our embassy, this has the potential to inflame one of the most intractable conflicts. The chief Palestinian negotiator said it threatens to replace international law with the law of the jungle. Handing embattled prime minister Netanyahu a political win. Thank you so much for that.
