Transcript for Russian Aircraft Comes Within Feet of US Military Aircraft
We move on to a close encounter between a U.S. Military aircraft and Russian fighter jet. You may remember this from "Top gun." That was during the height of the cold war but still happening now and ABC's Martha Raddatz is in Washington with the latest. Good morning, Martha. Reporter: Good morning, George. This was provocative irresponsible and dangerous in so many ways, I've flown wing tip to wing tip with another fighter jet and it takes a great deal of skill on the part of the pilots, but those jets are highly maneuverable and they were on the same team in constant communication. This recent encounter involved a big lumbering U.S. Reconnaissance jet and having a Russian fighter jet suddenly come up and fly right next to it is very different. That U.S. Reconnaissance plane cannot maneuver quickly and that whirling air, little tornadoes coming off the wings of the Russian fighter can affect the controllability of the U.S. Airplane, George. And, Martha, we're seeing this more and more in international airspace. 9 Russians trying to distract from all that tension in the Ukraine. Reporter: I think so. Putin is clearly flexing his muscles as well but those Russian hot dog pilots are also gathering intelligence about our U.S. Weapons systems, whether it is that reconnaissance plane or U.S. Navy ship that the Russian fighter recently -- but the big danger, George, is that someone makes a mistake. It is a scary game, okay, Martha, thanks very much.
