Transcript for President lies to US about Lewinsky relationship on TV: Part 8
A major crisis at the white house. A young woman with a crush or an obsession? If he did this thing, he must resign. Sex, lies and audiotapes. Well, once the story got out there, you could not talk about anything else. On the one hand, we were horrified, and the other hand, we were intrigued. Everybody was. Who is this girl? I had a conversation with bill, where he first told me about Monica. He told me, ever since I got to the white house, I've had to shut myself down, my body, I mean, sexually. And I didn't do what they said I did, but I did do so much with this girl that I really screwed up and I can't prove my innocence. What does Clinton ask Morris to do? Poll it. Poll, I want to know what I could get away with. I called him the next morning and I said, they'll forgive the adultery, but they won't for give lying. He said, so, what should I do? I said, don't lie. What does he do? He lies. Mr. President, welcome. Thank you, Jim. Jim Lehrer of the pbs news hour had a scheduled interview with president Clinton on the day the big story broke. Jim began, of course, by asking him about this huge bombshell, did you have a sexual relationship with this young intern? There is no improper relationship and I intend to cooperate with this inquiry. No improper relationship? Define what you mean by that. I think you know what means, it means that there is not a sexual relationship, an improper sexual relationship. That wasn't the question. We're not the brightest bulbs in the world, we reporters, but we said, wow, yes, have we got something here. Does improper mean any kind of sex? Look, the everybody -- improper, the American people know what improper means. The president knows what improper means. And yes, it means any kind of sex. The strategy from the white house was deny and divert. That's one of his M.O.S -- delay, on fuse Kate, attack. There's going to be a war. And then he came out and pounded that lectern. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman. Miss Lewinsky. What was your reaction when you saw this? The "That woman" part of the quote was so very harsh, and it was -- it was hurtful. These allegations are false and I need to go back to work for the American people. Thank you. By denying it, he unleashed something against Monica Lewinsky. Part of the strategy is going to be not only to attack this young woman's veracity but to attack her character. And in order to disbelieve her, you had to demean her some way. She's a stalker. She was paranoid. Someone who put the moves on the most powerful person in the world and it was all her fault. Monica Lewinsky was cast in late night comedy and in the political discussion as an object of ridicule, as a figure of fun. He got off while I talked dirty, you know, blah, blah, blah. Oh, okay. I didn't hear that. Tell me that louder. And the humidity! Man, I'll tell you, people's clothes are stickier than Monica lewinksy's! Man, it was just -- My question is, what if the person is a nut or a slut? The portrayal of Monica Lewinsky was, I think, one of the most shameful things that came out of the white house. The problem with Bill Clinton is that they concede nothing. He saw it from the beginning, perhaps correctly, as the fight of his political life. And once he did that, he sounded the trumpet for all of his supporters, don't budge. Don't budge an inch. Mrs. Clinton has taken over. She always does in times of crisis. Mrs. Clinton, good morning. Good morning, Matt. It was three days later or four days later, Hillary Clinton is on TV, saying it's a right-wing conspiracy. The great story here, for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it, is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president. Monica Lewinsky wasn't created by the right wing. Monica Lewinsky worked in the white house. Hillary obviously knew from the beginning that the charge about a relationship with Monica Lewinsky was true. Looking at his past, she had to have known that that was real. How could you stay in this marriage? You know, this is a marriage that goes back so many years now. You know, I've always loved him. And I know he loves me. So while I was still somewhat unsure about my marriage and its future, the jury was really out about whether the marriage would survive, whether I wanted it to survive. The problem in their marriage wasn't that he didn't love her. The problem in their marriage was that he loved everybody. Hillary was really ticked off at him. How could he be so stupid? But the fact that he'd wreck his presidency over it? She was infuriated. At the same time, why is she sticking around? I'm sure the thought crossed her mind that all of this embarrassment might not help her toward making the race for the United States senate in 2000. So, there was a cost to her to support him. She also understood that if she didn't support him, that if he would go down, that would take her down, too. This was my husband. And I felt that the only people who had a right to judge and hold him accountable for his private behavior were Chelsea and me. Those were the people that he had most betrayed. But he was also my president, and I thought, had done a great job as president despite a constant barrage of efforts to personally destroy him and undermine him. Now it was truly his own existence that was at stake. This is no longer merely about political damage control, it's about the president's survival. Nobody was better when up against the ropes. I do not believe anyone sitting at this table thinks that Monica Lewinsky did not have sex with president Clinton. And it turned very quickly. This is not just about bill Clinton and sex anymore, it's about sex and the possible obstruction of justice. If he loses the support of the country, he's lost the presidency. This is a very serious constitutional question. The country hovers on the edge of a genuine presidential crisis.
