and the day so many of you have been waiting for, us, too. The first day of spring, after what seemed to be the longest winter ever. This picture saying it all. Ice skaters still on the ice in New York. But not far away, these tiny flowers determined to bloom in central park. ABC's ginger zee, outside, as always. What do we hear from the nation's top scientists, today, about this spring, ginger? Reporter: Hallelujah, it's spring. Or so says the calendar. Parts of new England, enduring up to a foot of fresh snow, today. Chicago, asking, through all of that snow, is it really spring? And in Washington, D.C., the famous cherry blossom festival begins. Without the cherry blossoms. Hardly a Normal winter-turned-spring out west, either. In Oregon, Mt. Ashland ski area never opened this season. More than 20% of our nation still covered in snow. And all of this will play a role in what's to come. When you have a yard packed with ice and snow, it reflects the sun's rays, rather than absorbing them. That means you stay cold. While out west, you have the dry and hot soil absorbing the sun's energy, making it hotter and drier. Ginger live outside our studios tonight. Spring is here. Doesn't feel exactly like spring yet. Not quite. It's in the 40s. Relatively, it feels like tropical weather. Let's talk about what came out today, the climate prediction center's outlook. And the probability of being above average or below average for the next three months. You're seeing your color and your state. The Orange and red, California, included, above Normal. Below Normal, northern plains to great Lakes. And then, we have to talk about spring flooding potential. This is not map that came out today, from that same group. Moderate risk of spring flooding from Missouri to Michigan. And the red river, up in north Dakota, and parts of south Dakota, too. So, David, even though it doesn't feel like it, we're thinking spring. And that's going to have to do for now. It will do. Ginger, you soldiered through the winter outdoors for us. We thank you, every step of the way.
