Reporter: Tonight, a government warning to be on high alert for tax season scams. Featuring fake irs agents. They said, yes, you need to call us right away, you're being sued for $5,000 by the irs. I thought, yeah, really. Reporter: Even one of the treasury department's top investigators got a threatening call, demanding he pay up. Supposedly $750. And they're going to come arrest you? Correct. Reporter: Nearly 3,000 people have already been victims, scammed out scam ed out of more than $14 million. The scammers often overseas disguise their phone Numbers to make it appear they're calling from the irs. Am any trouble with the irs? Yes, sir, so, you owe $1,498.37 to the irs. Reporter: As we found out, the fake agents can make serious threats. I am going to proceed you to the sheriff's office and within the next hour, they will be at your doorstep and put you behind bars. Reporter: The irs says it will never call demanding immediate payment. Never require payment with prepaid cash cards or ask for credit card Numbers. And they won't threaten to arrest you.
