Transcript for Steve Mnuchin and Maxine Waters clash at hearing
A meeting of the house financial services committee got really awkward yesterday after treasury secretary Steven mnuchin told Maxine waters that he had people to see and places to go. Is it possible you could give us another 15 minutes? I have a foreign leader waiting in my offee at 5:30. If you wish to keep me here so I don't have my important meeting and continue to grill that, we can do that. I will cancel my meeting and I will not be back here. I want to be very clear. Thank you. The gentleman, the secretary, has agreed to stay. Please cancel your meeting. I told you I thought it was respectful that you would let me leave at 5:15. You're free to leave at any time you want. Please dismiss everybody. I believe you're supposed to take the gravel and slam it. Please do not instruct me how to conduct this hearing. He said gravel and meant to say gavel. I think he meant to say a word he's familiar with grovel. I think the lesson here is don't mess with auntie Maxine. I don't know when people will stop and realize she always has time to teach. Remember when she said I'm reclaiming my time, that was with the same person, with they've had this back and forth thing going. Now she's the chair of the committee. She's in charge. She's responsible for decorum and setting the tone. I thought it was very disrespectful that he was trying to take the power away from her. She reminded him I thought quite well that she was in pow. It's a new day. I wonder if he would have treated a man the same way. When I think about decorum and inspiration and bringing the country together, Maxine waters is not who I think of for that. For what? She's not who I think of for that. I'm not a fan of mnuchin. She said recently if you see anybody from the trump cabinet out you get out and create a crowd. You push back and say they're not welcome anymore anywhere. How does that bring us together? If you see general Mattis at a table and say you get out? A man who served our country. I see her as a symbol of decorum. I see her as a woman who's very strong. She's served in congress for over 25 years. I see her a symbol of the civil rights movement. When I see that exchange, if you're hating politics and you think no one is speaking for you, that exchange is why I feel that way. Why is he in a hurry? Hillary Clinton sat there for 11 hour. Maybe Hillary Clinton had better bladder control. First of all, let's remember things Donald Trump has called Maxine waters. He's called her dumb and low iq. He's been incredibly offensive. To me I hold him to a higher standard than anybody else. I think leadership comes from the top. That being said, we're a constitutional democracy. These are equal branches of government. They have to learn how to get along and have a level of decorum. It's been deteriorating. Last week we saw people boo congresswoman Debby Dinkle when she was on the floor making a statement. We saw the contentiousness between congressman Duffy and If you don't agree with me, then you're somehow stupid, you're less of a human being. The person who says that the most is Donald Trump. No one disagrees with that at this table. He's bullied and abused pretty much everybody. I don't think we should look to the president as to how we should be living our life. I do. I will never let him off that threshold. He's not going to change. I'm not going to change either. I'm not going to accept the president of the United States behaves like a bully and a 10-year-old. He should inspire us. He ain't inspiring me to do anything. That's how we should live our lives. Meghan, you have time. Thank you. I was interested in listening to what everyone has to say. I degree with Abby depending under which the prism you view politics you're taking a victory I think it moves the needle no place. It's a horrible place where we are in society. We try to hold ourselves to a different standard that president trump. I understand your anger. I share your anger about the way president trump conducts himself. I don't agree with if you see someone in a restaurant you should surround them it seems dangerous. There was a time that Ronald Reagan was shot and tip o'neil went to his bedside and prayed with him. I yearn for that time. I hope we can move past this and this isn't the threshold that we've hit that there's no way to come back from. Well put. We're talking about things that perhaps Maxine waters said outside the meeting. Let's talk about what happened in the hearing which is mnuchin being disrespectful in the Coming up Meghan Markle was a female doctor to deliver her
