Now to the army trainee who hijacked a bus with 18 children on board in South Carolina. Steve osunsami joins us now and we're learning more about that trainee. Reporter: That's right, Michael. This morning authorities are praising the school bus driver for keeping his cool and for putting the safety of his students first. The commander of the military base where the trainee is from is now apologizing to the famil3 of those children. A South Carolina sheriff is releasing a portion of the surveillance video showing how an army trainee hijacked a school bus with 18 children inside who were on their way to That is just a few seconds of the six minutes that these kids and the bus driver were very traumatized and feared their life. Reporter: The 23-year-old seen in his army training uniform with an army issued rifle, forcing his way onto the bus and pointing the gun at the driver. Police are identifying him as Jovan Collazo and say he was trying to leave the military and wanted the bus driver to get him to the next town so he could get home to New Jersey. The kids were asking questions, are you a soldier? Are you going to hurt us? Are you going to hurt the bus driver? Reporter: 10-year-old ke-aundre James was on the bus calling his parents. I called my dad and so I was telling him that I was being held hostage. Reporter: At one point the fourth grader felt that he had to hide his phone. He didn't call back and he didn't text back so that's just when I just went into panic mode. Reporter: The sheriff says that after several minutes the 23-year-old stopped the bus and let the bus driver and kids get off. Police arrested him shortly after. Collazo is now charged with 19 counts of kidnapping, armed robbery, carjacking and more. He had only been in basic training for three weeks and wanted out. His commander says they don't believe he intended to hurt anyone. The commander says because this was a trainee that gun was unloaded but, of course, there is no way anyone on the bus would have known that. Cecilia.
