Back now with new developments this morning for a couple whose cruise ship vacation ended with a trip to a Mexican hospital saying they were being held hostage after an unpaid medical bill. Kaylee Hartung joins us from Atlanta where a big celebrity stepped in in a big way. Good morning, Kaylee. Reporter: Good morning, Tom. It turns out some celebrities are just like us. They wake up and they watch "Good morning America." That is how Tyler Perry learned about this Atlanta couple in trouble and his generosity now has one man calling him a superhero. This morning, movie mogul Tyler Perry coming to the rescue of an American couple trapped in a Mexican hospital being held against their will over an unpaid medical bill. God bless Tyler Perry and thank you so much. You are a superhero to me. Reporter: On "Good morning America" Friday, we told you the story of Stephen Johnson's dream vacation turning into a nightmare. He went into diabetic shock on board a carnival cruise ship. As soon as the boat made it to the next port in the Mexican city of progreso, they went to the hospital. He was diagnosed with diabetes, pancreatitis and acute kidney infection. At that time his blood sugar was at a 900. Reporter: After spending three days in intensive care the couple says they were slapped with a $14,000 bill. They offered to pay half up front then work out an installment plan but they say the hospital won't let them leave without paying in full, even alleging the staff physically assaulted them when they tried to leave. The bleeding, this is one of the areas that I was attacked. Reporter: The hospital telling ABC news our policy is not to give any information of our patients. Without this hospital I would have died so that's the truth so they deserve payment, but you can't hold me hostage. Reporter: Perry saw that disturbing story on "Gma" and called ABC affiliate WSB in Atlanta to see how he could help. I think I said Tyler Perry's name about 10, 15 times before -- but I was in disbelief to be totally honest because he called my personal cell phone and said, hey, I want to pay your bill. He captured my heart just him being so generous. Reporter: Stephen tells us his medical bill has been paid in full. He believes the hospital will clear him medically to fly back home here to Atlanta on Sunday. Tyler Perry has offered to cover those travel expenses as well, whit. Wow, Kaylee Hartung, thank you so much. Can you imagine getting that call you're in the hospital dealing with that, hey, it's Tyler Perry, I'm going to take care of the bill. You're in good shape. Tyler Perry is going to get a lot of messages like, hey, can you help me out. Help me out. Also a lot of questions about getting sick on vacation being left in a hospital in a foreign country.
