Transcript for Michael, Sara and Keke discuss the uproar over Shay Mitchell's breastfeeding pics
Did anyone see this? I have been wanting to talk about this for a while. Shay Mitchell posted this glamorous photo captioning it breast friends. She's nursing her baby. Very fierce. Yes. A lot of people praised her photo but she did get comments like this one, quote, I'm a fan of her but this picture just says it's an attention getter. She's not even looking at the baby. She's not connected with the baby. She's connected with the camera, unquote. Yeah, but the baby is connected to her breast. So that viewer can stand corrected, there is a connection there. But shay responded, I missed the part in the baby books that stated I had to maintain contact with my daughter while she feeds rather than capturing an amazing moment we were having. So, as a mom who's nursing, I have some things to say about this. One thing is that, first of all, I had ideas of what breastfeeding would be like when I was younger. My sister had a baby and I wanted to wake up with the baby and she's like, you need me because the baby has to eat. I watched her and I had visions of someone staring into their child. By the way, everyone laughing must have gone through this before because what I saw was my sister sprawled like this, the baby here, my sister's asleep. So I'm going to go with the real life version over the Instagram version. But secondly, the point of that photo was what we've seen when we see models walk the runway. They're not literally the best scenarios to be feeding your baby. It's normalizing nursing. It's not the only way to feed your child -- Absolutely. But if you do decide to nurse, we need to remember that the body is not sexual at that moment. It's doing the most primitive thing it knows how. It's feeding our young, and when we put women in the bathroom on airplanes or in public places to do the most sanitary, like, again, primitive thing we can do, the best thing we can do, we got to stop making it seem like something we hide away and do. So the reason women like her are doing this is to say that they're doing the best they can. It's hard enough without the judgment. So, you know -- Do your thing, shay Mitchell.
