We turn now to that incredible story of a 16-year-old girl lucky to be alive this morning after a parachute failed to open at her first try at skydiving. It started as a birthday gift from her dad. Reporter: Mckenzie alive and breathing on her own, a miracle considering her sweet 16 jump took such horrible turn. She plummeted more than half a mile through the sky before hitting the ground as her stunned father watched. An adventurous teen's birthday present, a dream to go skydiving with her father for sweet 16. It was her dream, her dream, and my dad said, okay, on your 16th birthday I will take you skydiving. Reporter: Mckenzie and her father traveled to chicksaw, Oklahoma, where a 16-year-old can sky dive with parental concept. Makenzie tweeting I'll be as careful as I can be. Megan got a frantic call from her father. He was like her chute didn't open up and got tangled and I was like this is not funny. Reporter: She had fallen spinning 3500 feet to the ground. She honestly keeps saying is she just thinks it's her fault because she couldn't reach up and pull the chute. Reporter: She was rushed to an Oklahoma City hospital where she is recovering from internal bleeding, a broken vertebrae and a shattered pelvis. She's breathing on her own in an intensive care unit. She's okay. You know, she's not dead. She could be. Reporter: Bob swainson who owns pegasus air sport said her parachute did open but that there was a problem with it and they're not sure what created the problem. He added that Makenzie did not follow the training on how to activate a second chute. Her family is hiringing an attorney to help investigate what caused the accident. She was remain in icu as her body continues to heal and after that, the family will focus on finding out what went wrong. In her home state you have to be 18 to jump.
