So many of us remember that first year in college. Oh, yeah. I think I just worked it off. We should show some pictures. Or not. But we're not going to. Often means a lot of late night, unhealthy foods but there are way to avoids packing on unwanted pounds. Abbie Boudreau with the tips. ? Reporter: It's college move-in week but saying good-bye to your parents could mean saying hello to the dreaded freshman 15. The weight gain by new kids on campus. I love eating. Reporter: 18-year-old Dylan Jarvis is leaving for college today and is already thinking about how she'll avoid it. I'm nervous about all this food that's going to be there. There's an ice cream bar and, you know, they have chicken nuggets for dinner all the time. Reporter: While you may not gain 15 pounds expert agree you'll likely gain some. The research shows that the average weight gain among freshmen is about 5 pounds during their first year. Reporter: And it's no wonder freshmen put on the pounds between the drinking games and late night pizza deliveries there's also a constant stream of food at the cafeteria so how can you take control? First of all, get enough shut-eye. So basically when we don't get at least eight hours of sleep each night, we experience hormonal changes that can actually increase our appetite. It can cause us to eat more than we planned. Reporter: But you can always keep trim by hitting the gym. Treating it like a class. So you want to schedule time to head to the gym. Not only a gateway to keep your weight in check but stress reliever as well. Reporter: Don't treat the dining room like an all you can eat steak house. We know there's so many all you can eat buffets. You can overdo it when it cops to calories. Reporter: Dylan plans to keep the pounds off by staying on the softball at school and avoiding the ice cream bar but is okay with cheating now and then.
