Transcript for Billionaire Backlash
A firestorm tonight over comments made by an American billionaire, one of the founding fathers of silicon valley. He has shown off his yacht before, many will know his ex-wife. But his argument that it's the rich in this country getting unfair criticism is now getting a critique of its own. Here's ABC's Clayton Sandell now. Reporter: Tom Perkins is an uber-wealthy silicon valley billionaire who believes there is a war against the rich. But in a letter published in "The Wall Street journal," Perkins claims a rising tide of hatred against the wealthy 1%-ers here in the U.S. Can be compared to kristallnacht, nazi attacks in 1938 that killed nearly 100 jewish citizens and sent another 30,000 to concentration camps. "This is a very dangerous drift in our American thinking," he writes.evidence, Perkins cites everything from newspaper attacks on his ex-wife -- celebrity author Danielle Steele -- protests against tech workers, even the occupy movement. Analogies to the holocaust are simply never appropriate. Mr. Perkins needs to take responsibility and apologize. Reporter: The company that still bears Perkins' name wants nothing to do with its founder, tweeting, "Tom Perkins has not been involved in KPCB in years. We were shocked by his views." It's your typical football field-sized yacht, huh? Reporter: Perkins, who once showed off his $150 million yacht to "60 minutes," did not respond today. As the chorus grows louder from critics who believe the billionaire has taken a silver spoon out of his mouth and replaced it with his foot. Clayton Sandell, ABC news, Denver.
