covering tonight, the wildfires raging in the west, both Washington and Oregon under states of emergency right now, the images out of there are gripping. A helicopter dropping water on the flames seemingly dwarfed by the smoke. 2,000 firefighters already on the line, soon to be joined by the U.S. Military. ABC's Brandi Hitt is on the scene in Washington. Good evening. Reporter: Strong winds up to 30 miles per hour are pushing these wildfires in several directions. A new arsenal is being activated before more homes are destroyed. Firefighters will soon be using the military might of these 130 airplanes seen here in prior missions to battle what's been an unstoppable enemy. The destructive fires in central Washington. These fire fighting planes from the Wyoming National Guard will be dispatched tomorrow and can drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in five seconds much needed help to fight fast-moving flames that have destroyed at least 100 homes and forced new evacuations overnight as another home burned. Pack up and get going. The ones I've seen probably went up within five, ten minutes. Reporter: Many families have returned to find their homes reduced to rubble. For others it was a close call. The flames are like 40 feet high. You got guys lucky though? Very lucky. Reporter: Those forced to flee are seeking shelter here with the red cross as thick smoke continues to fill the sky, making it difficult to breathe. Massive clouds so heavy, the smoke spread as far away as Chicago. There are 50 wildfires state-wide. One volunteer told me they are out of resources and now waiting for fire crews from as far away as the midwest. These firefighters need all the help they can get.
