Has that story for us. Robin, the globes have aired on NBC the past 25 years. You won't see it there next year but based on ratings not a lot saw it this year either. It wasn't just record low viewership that did it in. Controversy after controversy and now Tom Cruise, one of the biggest stars in Hollywood has even slapped a return label on his golden globe statues. Welcome to the 2021 golden globes. Reporter: The golden globes off for now. NBC announced it will not air the awards show next year, another major blow to the globes following months of criticism from movie stars and Hollywood insiders directed at the Hollywood foreign press association after an L.A. Types report that revealed among other things none of the group's 87 voting members are black. Scarlett Johansson also spoke out agains the globes explaining why she refused to attend press conferences held by the group for years, attending, quote, meant facing sexist questions by some members that bordered on sexual harassment. She's now urging Hollywood to take a step back from the group unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization. The winner is Tom Cruise. Reporter: Now three-time golden flown winner Tom Cruise is joining the growing boycott returning his statues to the organization. He has three golden globes and he said, nah. You can have these back. That is a signal to other prominent white people in power in this industry to step up and fight the fight with us. Reporter: The association's lack of black members did not go unmentioned by hosts and presenters at this year's ceremony. I realize hfpa, maybe you didn't get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald's but you got to change that. So here's to changing it. Yes, and looking forward to that change. It is great to be black at the golden globes. Back, back at the golden globes. Reporter: Just last week the organization approved a plan meant to make its membership more inclusive saying it planned to add at least 20 new members with a specific focus on recruiting black members but that was too little too late for some including Mark Ruffalo who won a globe this year for his role in "I know this much is true." The more we include each other and see each other and hear each other, the faster we will heal our broken hearts and minds. Reporter: Over the weekend he said he cannot feel proud or happy about being the rye sip cent of this award. NBC was reportedly paid $60 million a year in broadcast rights for the globes and did leave open the possibility to bring it back if they make changes and 87 members of the foreign press make ups hfpa.
