We're back now with our very personal and candid conversation with music power house demi Lovato. With depression and anxiety on steroids now for so many Americans in the era of covid, demi's struggles are more relevant than ever before. What she says about the value of stepping out of your comfort zone and what is helping her now. Hi, demi, how are you? I'm great. How are you? I'm doing really well. This year 2020 started off with a bang for you. You were performing at the super bowl singing the national anthem. You performed at the grammys. You released your brand new single. Then the pandemic hits. What were the first few weeks like for you? Confusing. I was so prepared to start my, quote/unquote, comeback and release music I hadn't released in years and talk about things I wanted to talk about for so then it came screeching to a halt. I just adjusted. I took the steps I needed to make sure that I needed mentally and started adjusting my priorities. You have been so open and because of that so helpful about your struggle with depression and anxiety and mental illness. Those are the groups of people who are most at risk right now in these times and dealing with their illness and their diagnosis and feeling isolated. How have you handled this pandemic with what you've been struggling with your entire life? That's an interesting question. For me it's something that I think a lot of people are experiencing for the first time in their lives. This is something that I've dealt with for many years. Anxiety is not new to me. It's just a matter of pulling out the tools that I learned over past experiences. Talk space has been that tool for you and others. Tell me about it. Talk space is amazing. You literally are connected with someone who is there to help you, a therapist. It's anonymous. You don't have to share anything you don't feel comfortable with. You're able to get the help right away you need if you're too -- if you're uncomfortable picking up the phone and asking for help. Congratulations on your engagement. Has max helped you cope with your anxiety? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, there's never been a more perfect person to step foot into my life. Such the perfect timing too as well because he just already does a lot of these things that I've actually picked up on his habits which are yoga. Used to not really love yoga. Started to do that. Started to meditate more and journaling and things like that. You turned 28 a couple weeks ago. I'm on fire and I know that it burns One of the ways you wanted to mark the occasion was by shining a spotlight and launching a campaign to demand justice for breonna Taylor and you're keeping a spotlight on black lives matter. It's very important to you. Why do you want to use your platform for these causes? Why are these causes so important to you? You know, you hear a lot of times people have excluded celebrities or athletes or whatever. They say you're not politicians. Stick to music. Stick to this, do whatever. We've entered a year where it's been clear that silence equals violence. We can no longer stay silent. We have to go out of our comfort Zones and preach for what we think is right. If that's different than someone else's opinion, that's up to them. For me it's important to seek justice in our society for ever who is oppressed.
