Transcript for Donald Trump Declares Capitol Hill Meetings a Success
We do begin with Donald Trump's high stakes meeting with Paul Ryan. The big question can they bring the gop together and Jon Karl has the latest from Washington. Good morning, Jon. Reporter: Good morning. There was lots of talk of unity at that meeting yesterday but republicans remain deeply divided and are struggling to come to terms with their nominee. Overnight Donald Trump declared his charm offend whiff with Paul Ryan a budding success. I think for the most part we agree on a lot of different items and we're getting there. Reporter: Trump's first trip to capitol hill is the presumptive nominee created a circus-like atmosphere outside party headquarters. Inside, trump and top republicans in congress tried to tamp down a debate that has divided the party. It was very good. Reporter: The he will fabts in the room, speaker Ryan's refusal to endorse trump. After the meeting, he made it clear he is still not there. Are you endorsing Donald Trump? If you're not what is holding you back and do you really have a choice? It's very important that we don't fake unifying. We don't pretend unification. That we truly and actually unify so we are full strength in the fall. Reporter: Man in the middle, RNC chairman reince priebus played the role of marriage counselor and they need to get to know each other. I can say it was a great first meeting to start that process. Reporter: One unwelcome development for trump, the secret service is now investigating his former mar-a-lago butler calling for the death of president Obama. The trump campaign tells ABC news the butler has not worked there for years and, quote, we totally and completely disavow the horrible statements made by him regarding the president. And in a vivid sign that republicans really are trying to unify, trump received a call yesterday from Lindsey graham who had once said trump, quote, scares the hell out of me and is the most unprepared person he's ever meet to be commander in chief. After the 15-minute call last night trump tweeted, the two had a, quote, very interesting talk about national security. Graham called it cordial and pleasant saying the campaign is over, he won. Signs of progress for Donald Trump. Okay, Jon Karl, thanks very much.
